The article discusses the danger of a large high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) which is generated by a weapon exploded at least 40 miles above the earth. An extremely fast, high-amplitude E1 pulse, a component of HEMP, is created by gamma ray interaction with stratospheric air molecules. The development of weapons with extraordinary levels of gamma ray production is planned because of the extreme effects that a very large E1 pulse could have on an enemy country's infrastructure.
