The article discusses how achieving minimum octane ratings economically and without exceeding Reid vapor pressure (RVP) requirements acts as a challenge for refineries blending gasoline. It notes that a reaction designed to join molecules can create chains in place of pairs. It adds that alkylate production does not take place at high temperatures and pressures compared to many processes working within refineries, but the early process phases are highly corrosive.
