Aim To advance understanding of compassion from a professional perspective, specifically through the perceptions of students and academics from the fields of adult, child, learning disability and mental health nursing. Method: A constructivist grounded theory study was undertaken, and a theoretical sampling strategy was used to guide the selection of appropriate participants. A total of 12 nursing students and eight nurse academics were interviewed to explore their perceptions of compassion in nursing between January and August 2018. The interview transcripts were analysed using grounded theory techniques. Findings: Four categories were identified from the interview data: character for compassion, competence for compassion, culture for compassion, and connections for compassion. These categories were interlinked, with each having the potential to influence the implementation of humanising approaches to care, which participants perceived to be fundamental to compassion. Conclusion: Compassion is a complex concept that can be influenced by biological, psychological and socio-contextual factors. Further consideration of these factors is required to support nurses to facilitate compassion through humanising approaches to care. Simulated practice learning is used in pre-registration nursing programmes to replicate situations that nursing students are likely to encounter in clinical practice, but in a safe and protected academic environment. However, lecturer-led simulated practice learning has been perceived as detached from contemporary nursing practice by some nursing students. Therefore, a pilot project was implemented in the authors' university to explore the use of student-led simulated practice learning and its potential benefits for nursing students. Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of student-led simulated practice learning in pre-registration nursing programmes. The authors specifically wanted to: enhance the students' skills; improve their critical thinking and reflective strategies; and develop their leadership and management techniques. Method A literature review was undertaken to examine the evidence supporting student-led simulated practice learning. A skills gap analysis was then conducted with 35 third-year nursing students to identify their learning needs, from which suitable simulated practice learning scenarios and sessions were developed and undertaken. These sessions were evaluated using debriefs following each of the sessions, as well as informal discussions with the nursing students. Findings The pilot project identified that student-led simulated learning: developed nursing students' ability to plan and facilitate colleagues' practice learning; enabled nursing students to develop their mentoring skills; reinforced the nursing students' self- awareness, which contributed to their personal development; and demonstrated the importance of peer feedback and support through the debriefs. Challenges included overcoming some students' resistance to the project and that some lecturers were initially concerned that nursing students may not have the clinical expertise to lead the simulated practice learning sessions effectively. Conclusion This pilot project has demonstrated how student-led simulated practice learning sessions could be used to engage nursing students as partners in their learning, enhance their knowledge and skills, and promote self-directed learning. Aim: The aim of this research was to identify healthcare teaching staff’s understanding of spirituality, how their understanding may shape teaching practice and how this may contribute to the documented issues around incorporating spirituality into patient assessment and care. Method: A mixed-method, small-scale explorative online survey was used. Findings: Several perceptions and practices were identified that led to a better understanding of the obstacles to teaching in this area. Suggestions were made about how to shape teaching spirituality to improve patients’ experience and ensure spirituality is integrated more fully into assessment and care. Conclusion: This study brought a better understanding of obstacles to integrating spirituality into teaching for healthcare lecturers and offered some ideas on how to best address these obstacles. Aim: To ascertain and compare the perspectives of students and lecturers at Edinburgh Napier University and Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands, regarding person-centred care. Method: Data were collected using face-to-face, structured interviews and analysed using a person-centred nursing framework. Findings: Participants believed that person-centred care should be incorporated within pre-registration nursing education. Conclusion: The way person-centred care is taught varied between the two universities. To report nurse educators' perspectives of the appropriateness of pre-registration nursing education programmes in preparing nurses to practise in primary care. Method Data were collected through semi-structured telephone and face-to-face interviews with eight nurse educators, and were subject to thematic analysis. Findings Nurse educators believed that nursing education programmes did not adequately prepare newly qualified nurses to work in primary care because they provided limited experience in this setting. Conclusion Factors such as shortage of practice placements in primary care and lack of mentors to supervise and support students were identified as major barriers to student learning and subsequent preparedness to work in primary care.
