The article discusses the need for the U.S. to have a clearly defined strategic mission in 2008. It notes that during the Cold War, the U.S. role was to stop the expansion of communism but that role is no longer appropriate when the Cold War ended. The threat of China, the war of terrorism and strength of new coalitions are considered the new areas of focus for the development of the new strategic mission. Four kinds of observations that can affect the content of the mission statement are also described.
