Struggling to create more capacity, regulatory authorities are being tasked by British government to consider mixed-mode operations at London, England-based Heathrow airport. Mixed-mode operations, where a runway is used simultaneously for incoming and outgoing traffic, is one recommendation from the government's white paper. While government supports development of a third runway at Heathrow airport by 2015, additional capacity needs must be met in the interim. Some officials have suggested this method of operation could provide the ability to handle up to an additional 10 traffic movements per hour.
