The article reports on studies which showed that carbon-based materials could enhance versatility of ultrathin membranes. Scientists at the University of Manchester in England prepared graphene oxide laminates that allow water to pass through unimpeded. The National Institute for Materials Science in Japan made amorphous carbon nanosheets that let organic solvents through while rejecting organic dyes. Scientists are looking for ways to control carbon to create materials with useful function.
