- Abstract
The book uses distance functions, a generalization of the more familiar production function, as the theoretical and empirical tools to construct Lerner indexes of market power in both the input and output markets. The use of distance functions enables us to explicitly account for the effects of firm inefficiency and price markups in the evaluation of market power. The book focusses on the theory and provides a menu of applications to construct measures of firm efficiency and market power in the financial and public sectors.

- Abstract
The popular expression'Do more with less'really sums up one of the many challenges of living in modern times. Because, in addition to the country's faltering politics and economy, as always, the impression we have is that - with the advancement of science and technology - the world is getting faster and faster. Now I ask you: faced with such an uncertain scenario, with days getting shorter and businesses more demanding, what can an ordinary person, like you and me, for example, do to stand out in the job market? Prayer might help - someone might ask - but the truth is, if you don't produce more than others - continuously and with better quality, of course! - your future will be forgotten.

- Abstract
The Stepped Approach: Onboard Better, Systemize Smarter, and Bring Out the Best in Your Sales TeamIt is a mystery why sales leaders are often thrown into their positions without a clue as to how to go about guiding a sales team. In most professions, training is a requirement, but many times sales leaders are simply hired with the expectation that they intrinsically know how to motivate and encourage a team. Most often this is not the case and author Dionne Mejer has spent the last several decades training sales leaders how to effectively lead using a simple-to-follow stepped approach that consistently gives great results. In The Stepped Approach: Onboard Better, Systemize Smarter, and Bring Out the Best in Your Sales Team, Dionne lays out a simple but effective system that will have your sales team buzzing with productivity, team spirit, and positivity. She holds nothing back when sharing a system that she has proven to be highly effective and manageable. Using worksheets, scorecards, and accountability activities, sales leaders are taught not only how to bring out the best in their teams, but to use what they've learned to become great all-around leaders both in their professional and personal lives.

- Abstract
A rallying manifesto for the innovative problem-solving we need to build a better, more verdant, and sustainable planetary existence.Academics are letting Africa down. With all that we know, what do we have to show for it? Whose lives have been changed for the better by it? What have we done for and with our communities lately? In this provocative book—the first in a trilogy—Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga argues that our critical thinkers must become actual thinker-doers. Taking its title from one of Thomas Sankara's most inspirational speeches, Dare to Invent the Future looks for moments in Africa's story where precedents of critical thought and knowledge in service of problem-solving are evident to inspire readers to dare to invent such a knowledge system.Mavhunga revisits insights from Edward Wilmot Blyden, Booker T. Washington, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Amílcar Cabral, Julius Nyerere, and Thomas Sankara to illustrate how the academic disciplines have been, and could be, deployed in the service of and through problem-solving, building on what people are doing and know. At its core, he writes, knowledge in the service of and through problem-solving derives from reading the past for new questions, doing due diligence in the present, and contriving an anticipatory approach toward the future.Questioning the fundamental premises of Western and white knowledge production, especially regarding science and technology, Mavhunga proposes in this book refreshingly new approaches to thinking-doing that stem from African realities, in the hopes of inspiring a generation that will run toward, not away from, problems to solve them.

- Abstract
This book is an easy-to-understand guide to modeling productivity and efficiency using modern statistical tools. It introduces readers to the fundamentals of stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and gradually takes them to the forefront of academic research in this area, examining the latest concepts and methods related to the use of copulas in SFA.Following a comprehensive review of classic methodology, Professor Artem Prokhorov covers topics in panel data modeling, in endogeneity in SFA, in joint modeling of technical and allocative inefficiency, and in optimal and robust prediction of inefficiency scores. This is done using copulas to capture various kinds of statistical dependence that have been previously ignored when modeling production. The classic and advanced topics are illustrated using practical examples and codes written in modern programming languages. As an important example, the book spells out the case where both the values of output and the ratio of inputs used in production are optimized simultaneously. Such simultaneity, if ignored, leads to biased estimates of productivity and returns-to-scale and may understate inefficiency. The book offers a useful reference for those interested in the newest robust methods of business analytics in the area of productivity and efficiency, with implications for strategy, budgeting, resourcing and benchmarking of firms, industries and production units more generally.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Since Masaki Imai connected the term KAIZEN with the world management arena in 1986, this approach has been used as a strategy for company development that is propelled by the participation and motivation of its employees. Centering the human being as the guiding axis of change and innovation, KAIZEN-21 establishes a practical and theoretical guide for organizations to easily implement this ancestral philosophy within their operational processes in the midst of the chaotic and complicated global environment of the 21st century. Presenting an updated model of guiding principles, techniques, and tools, Manuel F. Suárez Barraza demonstrates how KAIZEN can be successfully applied in the context of pandemics, supply chain crises, and regional war. Beginning with the definition and origins of KAIZEN, chapters explore 5'S, standardization (Hiojunka), SDCA and PDCA cycles, as well as process innovation and kodawari-KAIZEN, or hitosukuri (management of people), closing with techniques for improving daily work, such as the the Kata of Improvement, and the author's links with the Toyota Production System (TPS) and the Mayan work model (K'AAT-KAIZEN). If you are ready to energize your business team and revolutionize workplace practices, then KAIZEN-21 is your essential resource for prioritizing internal change and development despite all adversity.

Lean is about building and improving stable and predictable systems and processes to deliver to customers high-quality products/services on time by engaging everyone in the organization. Combined with this, organizations need to create an environment of respect for people and continuous learning. It's all about people. People create the product or service, drive innovation, and create systems and processes, and with leadership buy-in and accountability to ensure sustainment with this philosophy, employees will be committed to the organization as they learn and grow personally and professionally. Lean is a term that describes a way of thinking about and managing companies as an enterprise. Becoming Lean requires the following: the continual pursuit to identify and eliminate waste; the establishment of efficient flow of both information and process; and an unwavering top-level commitment. The concept of continuous improvement applies to any process in any industry. Based on the contents of The Lean Practitioners Field Book, the purpose of this series is to show, in detail, how any process can be improved utilizing a combination of tasks and people tools and introduces the BASICS Lean® concept. The books are designed for all levels of Lean practitioners and introduces proven tools for analysis and implementation that go beyond the traditional point kaizen event. Each book can be used as a stand-alone volume or used in combination with other titles based on specific needs. Each book is chock-full of case studies and stories from the authors'own experiences in training organizations that have started or are continuing their Lean journey of continuous improvement. Contents include valuable lessons learned and each chapter concludes with questions pertaining to the focus of the chapter. Numerous photographs enrich and illustrate specific tools used in Lean methodology. Suggesting Solutions: Brainstorming Creative Ideas to Maximize Productivity explores the process block diagram tool, how to do a Lean layout and Lean master layout and how to create standard work and visual management systems. - Abstract
Productivity varies widely between industries and countries, but even more so across individual firms within the same sectors. The challenge for governments is to strike the right balance between policies designed to increase overall productivity and policies designed to promote the reallocation of resources towards firms that could use them more effectively. The aim of this book is to provide the empirical evidence necessary in order to strike this policy balance. The authors do so by using a micro-aggregated dataset for 20 EU economies produced by CompNet, the Competitiveness Research Network, established some 10 years ago among major European institutions and a number of EU productivity boards, National Central Banks, National Statistical institutes, as well as academic Institutions. They call for pan-EU initiatives involving statistical offices and scholars to achieve a truly complete EU market for firm-level information on which to build solidly founded economic policies.

- Abstract
This book guides process-industry professionals from the implementation of the basic foundations of Continuous Improvement (CI) through to an organization where CI is a “way of life” and a defining feature of the culture of the organization. The readers of this book are seeking solutions to such pressing issues as:• Eliminating accidents and near misses.• Reducing customer complaints. • Improving customer delivery performance. • Elimination of accidents and near misses.• Reducing customer complaints. • Improving customer delivery performance. • Introducing new products. • Improving staff productivity. • Removing costs to meet the budget. • Dealing with absence and poor morale. • Improving staff retention. This book provides them with guidance on how to address issues in these areas in a way that enables improvements to be realized quickly but not at the expense of a long-term goal of a sustainable Continuous Improvement culture. In addition, this book presents the implementation of CI as a cyclical journey with no endpoint. The stages are ordered in a sequence that enables the reader to get started in their area of the company and build up the elements without the need for an overall organizational strategy at the beginning. Continuous Improvement is a vast subject with many takes on principles, approaches, and tools. This book is about how all the fundamentals of these areas fit together and, as such, covers only some of them. However, within the bibliography, I have signposted the books that have guided me during my career and which go into the principles, approaches, and tools further.

- Abstract

Get the Summary of Michael Hyatt's Free to Focus in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: What have you accomplished today? Nothing, I was just sitting around although I've got a lot to do. This is a usual conversation between any 2 people. And it usually ends with, you've got to do better, you have to work harder on yourself, you have to finish more. But are we finishing in the right way? This is what we need to think about. Is it only about finishing as many tasks as we can or knowing if we're doing the right ones? In the summary of Free to Focus, we'll identify the tasks that best suit us, we'll be able to change the way our minds define success. Success doesn't mean accomplishing as many tasks as we can, being successful in almost every field of life, and having to always provide more. We can provide more in what best makes us happier, satisfied, and complete. So, now you've got to ask yourself: Would you rather do more and feel less productive or do less and feel more productive? Michael Hyatt helps us with the answer to this question by providing some guidelines to how we can refocus our attention toward the right things to do, avoid the distractions that are surrounding us, and a society that always expects more from us, knowing the great effect of having good sleep, and feeling free to use our time the way we see it fitting our desires.

- Abstract
This edited volume presents an interdisciplinary collection of texts that examine the practice of gamification, the use of game design elements in non-game contexts, specifically as an organization and management research problem. As we travel deeper into the twenty-first century, it is becoming increasingly clear the late modernity is re defining its take on games and play. Following what has been termed a general ludification or playification of society, corporations are beginning to see games and play as resources rather than as a wasteful practice. We are witnessing the emergence of the practice of gamificiation with the intention of mobilizing play's motivational power for capitalist production. This book outlines both the essential'how tos'and also critically explores their links to diverse strands of organization theory such as institutionalism, business ethics, critical theory and organizational behavior. Gamification research has been mostly conducted within disciplines such as information studies, game studies and information systems science. This is a paradoxical state of affairs; whilst gamification aims at being a transformative intervention in work processes and practices and is being deployed as such by practitioners. This book will be of value to researchers, academics and students interested in management and organization studies.

- Abstract
This book presents an in-depth study of how the drive to optimize organizational performance can be significantly improved by investigating the causal relationships between profitability, productivity, and sustainability (PPS). This is presented through an assessment of a triple combined therapy that studies the interplay between Organizational DNA, Strategic Alignments for Value, and their implications for Sustainability. Through this approach, this volume seeks to answer critical mind-searching questions and provide useful guides as to how some firms are able to sustainably create higher value or wealth, especially through corporate entrepreneurship, or via the creation of new business models than others. In tackling the three elements of profitability, productivity, and sustainability, this book also provides greater insight through an in-depth study of the pervasively unresolved and disturbing issues surrounding the prospects of increasing the chances of success for entrepreneurial start-off ventures, making it of value to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of organizational studies, strategy, and sustainability.

- Abstract
From a Nobel Prize–winning pioneer in environmental economics, an innovative account of how and why “green thinking” could cure many of the world's most serious problems—from global warming to pandemicsSolving the world's biggest problems—from climate catastrophe and pandemics to wildfires and corporate malfeasance—requires, more than anything else, coming up with new ways to manage the powerful interactions that surround us. For carbon emissions and other environmental damage, this means ensuring that those responsible pay their full costs rather than continuing to pass them along to others, including future generations. In The Spirit of Green, Nobel Prize–winning economist William Nordhaus describes a new way of green thinking that would help us overcome our biggest challenges without sacrificing economic prosperity, in large part by accounting for the spillover costs of economic collisions. In a discussion that ranges from the history of the environmental movement to the Green New Deal, Nordhaus explains how the spirit of green thinking provides a compelling and hopeful new perspective on modern life. At the heart of green thinking is a recognition that the globalized world is shaped not by isolated individuals but rather by innumerable interactions inside and outside the economy. He shows how rethinking economic efficiency, sustainability, politics, profits, taxes, individual ethics, corporate social responsibility, finance, and more would improve the effectiveness and equity of our society. And he offers specific solutions—on how to price carbon, how to pursue low-carbon technologies, how to design an efficient tax system, and how to foster international cooperation through climate clubs. The result is a groundbreaking new vision of how we can have our environment and our economy too.

29. Quality Time: Productivity Through Time Management

- Abstract
Managers who focus on time usually concentrate on the wrong things. Quality Time presents a new approach to achieving productivity through time management. Time itself is not what matters but rather how that time is used to achieve individual and organizational goals. Managers who get upset over employees coming to work late or socializing on the job often care more about them “putting in time” than putting their time to good use. Quality Time is for managers and others who care about everyone putting their time to good use to contribute to the value of the organization. Based on unique concepts, Quality Time offers both general and specific information and advice from an individual and a team or group point of view. It is designed so that the manager is involved first and then group or team members are engaged. Through reciprocal communication, all parties can arrive at better uses of time. While focused on managers, anyone can achieve productivity from the use of the unique framework and assessments. Quality Time is different from other time-management books. Most are focused solely on the individual. Quality Time is intended to serve individuals but also workgroups or teams. Quality Time is readable. It uses straightforward language to involve the reader. It makes learning easier and enjoyable by making the material realistic and interesting. The material is up-to-date and accurate as well. Praise for Quality Time'I own a one employee company. Reading Quality Time enlightened me. It was not a difficult read and full of useful concepts, many I have never considered. We have all been taught, ‘plan your work, work your plan.'Dr. David Van Fleet's book keeps me focused on better ways to use time wisely to create a better plan.'Steve Nemeth Realtor Broker'The framework and assessments in the book should be valuable to any organization.'Todd LaPorte CEO of HonorHealth Scottsdale'Teamwork is a fact of life in organizations and the struggle to make teams use time more effectively is another ongoing fact of life. This book is a broadly comprehensive and immediately applicable look at the ways we can make team's use of time better. The novel use of the V-REEL® Framework to focus the efforts to improve team time is both insightful and helpful. My hearty applause is offered to David Van Fleet's unique perspective that will serve to improve team interactions and performance through the use of quality time.” G. David Flint, Co-founder of Value Creation Company and author of Think Beyond Value - Building Strategy to Win'Having completed the first-time management program offered by Time Systems, Inc. in 1980, I was keen to discover what David Van Fleet would offer to add to those earlier ideas and refine recommended practices that were previously known. Professor Van Fleet has offered here some wonderful time management tips, but even more importantly, he has demonstrated how to move from personal goal setting to managing team time, more readily achieving institutional goals. In particular, his idea of developing a means-end-staircase for a team is a significant contribution toward the management of time expended toward organizational goals. It necessarily includes consideration of the individual goals of each team member and should be highly motivating to everyone on the team. David has also addressed the necessary process of managing both the positive and negative effects of stress on employee performance. This book goes a long way toward explaining how to implement the principles in my own book.'Richard N. Morrison, Author, Activate Human Capital

- Economic history--21st century, COVID-19 Pandemic, 2020---Economic aspects, Industrial productivity, Labor productivity, Performance technology
- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic struck the global economy after a decade that featured a broad-based slowdown in productivity growth. Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies presents the first comprehensive analysis of the evolution and drivers of productivity growth, examines the effects of COVID-19 on productivity, and discusses a wide range of policies needed to rekindle productivity growth. The book also provides a far-reaching data set of multiple measures of productivity for up to 164 advanced economies and emerging market and developing economies, and it introduces a new sectoral database of productivity. The World Bank has created an extraordinary book on productivity, covering a large group of countries and using a wide variety of data sources. There is an emphasis on emerging and developing economies, whereas the prior literature has concentrated on developed economies. The book seeks to understand growth patterns and quantify the role of (among other things) the reallocation of factors, technological change, and the impact of natural disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This book is must-reading for specialists in emerging economies but also provides deep insights for anyone interested in economic growth and productivity. Martin Neil Baily Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution Former Chair, U.S. President's Council of Economic Advisers This is an important book at a critical time. As the book notes, global productivity growth had already been slowing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and collapses with the pandemic. If we want an effective recovery, we have to understand what was driving these long-run trends. The book presents a novel global approach to examining the levels, growth rates, and drivers of productivity growth. For anyone wanting to understand or influence productivity growth, this is an essential read. Nicholas Bloom William D. Eberle Professor of Economics, Stanford University The COVID-19 pandemic hit a global economy that was already struggling with an adverse pre-existing condition—slow productivity growth. This extraordinarily valuable and timely book brings considerable new evidence that shows the broad-based, long-standing nature of the slowdown. It is comprehensive, with an exceptional focus on emerging market and developing economies. Importantly, it shows how severe disasters (of which COVID-19 is just the latest) typically harm productivity. There are no silver bullets, but the book suggests sensible strategies to improve growth prospects. - Abstract
Responsible Consumption and Production, the twelfth UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 12), calls for significant change in how we view both production and consumption norms. It is predicted that, at the current rate of population growth and consumption, the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles would require the equivalent of almost three planets by 2050. It is clear that change is required, involving action from everyone from the producer to the final consumer. Since sustainable consumption aims for world citizens to ‘do better with less', all aspects of this change must be carefully considered with regard to critical ecological and social models that transform all production and consumption practices that are recognised as negative. Transitioning to Responsible Consumption and Production focuses on the transition to responsible production and consumption, and models that aid that transition. It offers a multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder conversation on this issue, with a focus on the intersection between encouraging and enhancing sustainable production processes, and enacting behaviour change and socially oriented decision-making by consumers. Transitioning to Responsible Consumption and Production is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. The book series is intended to reach beyond disciplinary, even academic boundaries.

The article argues whether monetary policy has long-term effects on the economy, particularly its potential output. It explores how tight monetary policy can reduce an economy's potential output even after a decade, primarily through investment decisions that result in lower productivity and capital stock. Conversely, loose monetary policy does not appear to raise long-term potential output, challenging the traditional belief that monetary policy is neutral in the long run.

The article describes the concept of "revamping" by Hainzl, in which outdated facilities in the areas of hydraulics and automation are modernized. Through comprehensive modernization concepts, the facilities are brought up to the current state of technology, the supply of spare parts is improved, and energy efficiency as well as productivity are increased. Hainzl has already successfully implemented projects in various areas, such as the repair and renewal of parts of a hydroelectric power plant and the modernization of a hot rolling mill. When carrying out revamping projects, tight schedules and consideration of spatial conditions are major challenges. The company Hainzl also develops custom solutions to meet customer needs in revamping projects. It is emphasized that Hainzl coordinates all trades on-site. The article also mentions the Ottensheim hydroelectric power plant project, in which Hainzl carries out cylinder refurbishment and hydraulic conversion for the turbines. The challenges and scope of the revamping are also addressed. [Extracted from the article]

- Abstract
We explore the extent to which macroeconomic policies, structural policies, and institutions can mitigate the negative relationship between temperature shocks and output in countries with warm climates. Empirical evidence and simulations of a dynamic general equilibrium model reveal that good policies can help countries cope with negative weather shocks to some extent. However, none of the adaptive policies we consider can fully eliminate the large aggregate output losses that countries with hot climates experience due to rising temperatures. Only curbing greenhouse gas emissions—which would mitigate further global warming—could limit the adverse macroeconomic consequences of weather shocks in a long-lasting way.

- Abstract
Living standards in the UK and US are in danger of falling. A decline in growth due to poor productivity and an unfavourable change in demography has weakened the stand of liberal democracy, and voter dissatisfaction is encouraging populist policies that threaten even worse outcomes. Whilst living standards once grew faster than productivity they now grow more slowly, and the working population is no longer growing faster than the population as a whole. To avoid falling living standards the productivity problem must be addressed. Andrew Smithers argues that faster productivity does not depend, as many suggest, on technology; it also relies on investment. Current growth theory is based on a faulty model which has induced pessimism about our ability to encourage more growth. Productivity and the Bonus Culture sets out a revised model which demonstrates that weakness in productivity is the result of the bonus culture, and suggests ways to change this flawed system so that investment is encouraged and growth returns.

- Abstract
Labor productivity growth in the United States and other advanced countries has slowed dramatically since the mid-2000s, a major factor in their economic stagnation and political turmoil. Economists have been debating the causes of the slowdown and possible remedies for some years. Unaddressed in this discussion is what happens if the slowdown is not reversed. In this volume, a dozen renowned scholars analyze the impact of sustained lower productivity growth on public finances, social protection, trade, capital flows, wages, inequality, and, ultimately, politics in the advanced industrial world. They conclude that slow productivity growth could lead to unpredictable and possibly dangerous new problems, aggravating inequality and increasing concentration of market power. Facing Up to Low Productivity Growth also proposes ways that countries can cope with these consequences.

- Abstract
The extent of tax compliance has important implications for revenue yield, efficiency and the fairness of any tax system. Tax evasion undermines revenue collection, distorts competition, and undermines a country's development prospects. In this paper, we investigate whether higher productivity causally leads to lower tax evasion. We first present stylized facts consistent with this view and develop a model that illustrates one potential transmission channel. Second, we test the model predictions at the firm level using the self-reported share of declared income as proxy for tax evasion for a large sample of emerging and developing economies. Our results suggests that productivity improvements by firms can lead to lower tax evasion.

- Abstract
This book shows how to consistently obtain annual and multiannual manufacturing target profit regardless of the evolution of sales volumes, increasing or decreasing, using the Manufacturing Cost Policy Deployment (MCPD) system. Managers and practitioners within the manufacturing companies will discover a practical approach within the MCPD system that will help them develop and support their long-term, medium-term, and short-term profitability and productivity strategy. The book presents both the basic concepts of MCPD and the key elements of transforming manufacturing companies through MCPD system, as well as supporting the consistent growth of external and internal profit by directing all systematic and systemic improvements based on meeting the annual and multiannual Manufacturing Cost Improvement (MCI) targets and means for each Product-Family Cost (PFC).This book is unique because it presents two types of systematic and systemic improvement projects for MCI that have been applied over the years in various multinational manufacturing companies operating in highly competitive markets, in order to address the consistent reduction of unit manufacturing costs by improving the Cost of Losses and Waste (CLW).Readers will discover the practical approach of MCI based on a structured approach to MCPD system beyond the traditional approach to manufacturing improvements based mainly on improved time and quality. Therefore, from the perspective of the MCPD system, the multiannual manufacturing target profits are met while the annual and multiannual manufacturing target costs are a predetermined stake and not a result of the improvements already made.
