The fact that different urban structures have different climatic effects and therefore differ in their thermal loads for people is well known. However, there is a lack of quantitative and qualitative surveys in specific districts that are suitable to derive accepted adaptation measures. This paper addresses the research questions where thermally stressed areas in public space are identified by mobile measurements and by mental maps and what are the causes of each, where both methods agree or disagree, and what are the benefits and the limitations of using both methods for prioritizing adaptation measures. Mobile measurements in an urban quarter over a whole day can supply needed data for determining thermal loads of urban structures and their temporal development. Mental maps give information about the perception of urban dwellers and -- based on the spatial distribution of obtained data -- the user frequency. Both methods provide information concerning where and when measures should be taken in order to facilitate adaptation to heat. The paper presents the results of mobile measurements and mental maps of two different urban quarters in Germany. Thermal loads were assessed by using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) for three selected summer days. Results indicated that the different urban structures can differ by up to 7K or by two stages of thermal stress during a hot summer day. Surface material with high albedo can overcompensate smaller sky view factors resulting in high thermal loads. Street trees caused changing thermal loads but reduced them on average. Identified hot spots based on mobile measurements mostly correlated with hot spots identified by mental maps, if they were frequently used. However, hottest spots identified by measurements were not necessarily most frequently named as hot spots in the mental maps.Most often named hot spots of mental maps coincided with major traffic routes suggesting that user frequency is important. Purpose: This paper aims to consider both the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and behavioural response in the optimal sizing of solar photovoltaic systems (PV modules and batteries) for energy communities. The objective is to achieve a high self-sufficiency rate whilst taking into account the grid carbon intensity and the global warming potential of system components. Design/methodology/approach: Operation and sizing of energy communities leads to optimization problems spanning across multiple timescales. To compute the optimisation in a reasonable time, the authors first apply a simulation periods reduction using a clustering approach, before solving a linear programming problem. Findings: The results show that the minimum GHG emissions is achieved for self-sufficiency rates of 19% in France and 50% in Germany. Research limitations/implications: The analysis is restricted to specific residential profiles: further work will focus on exploring different types of consumption profiles. Practical implications: This paper provides relevant self-sufficiency orders of magnitude for energy communities. This paper presents the long-term Karlsruhe temperature series re-digitized and reconstructed from handwritten manuscripts from 1779 to 1875 archived in various libraries. Despite great efforts, data from some periods remained missing in the manuscript departments so that the main Karlsruhe series remained partially fragmented. Combined with historic climate records available in the archive of German Weather Service (DWD), the entire series until 2008, when the official Karlsruhe station was relocated to Rheinstetten, is one of the longest climate series available for Germany. The series includes various observational parameters on a daily or even sub-daily basis converted into SI units or contemporary units. The focus of this paper is on the temperature series and presents some first statistical analyses to demonstrate the additional benefit of possessing unique long-term instrumental climate data on a sub-daily basis. The entire temperature series was homogenized with respect to consistent observation times and to a location on the city's periphery. It is shown that the width of the distribution function quantified from constructed daily maximum and minimum temperature has substantially broadened in the summer months, but not during winter or the entire year. The number of summer and hot days has substantially increased in the last 30-50 years, while the number of frost and ice days has decreased. Summer or hot days as well as heat waves were very rare before 1920, being unrepresentative of a period mainly unaffected by climate change. Singularities of the climate system, such as the (cold) Schafskalte in June or the (warm) Hundstage in July/August, are clearly shown in most periods. The (cold) Ice Saints in May, however, have a high frequency only in the coldest period between 1870 and 1960; they are hardly detectable in most of the preceding years. Temperature statistics show that the severity of late spring frosts has gradually increased during the entire record mainly as a result of later frost occurrences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Germany is launching a program to provide up to €4 billion in funding to help heavy industrial producers transition to green technologies. This paper presents a statistical analysis of the motion of hail-producing supercells in Germany based on data from a radar-based cell detection and tracking algorithm and a mesocyclone detection algorithm. The parameterization of supercell motion by Bunkers et al. (2000), originally developed using storm data from the United States, is evaluated regarding its applicability in Central Europe, where storm environments have other dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics owing to different geographical features. As a first step, the motion of 354 observed supercells in the warm season (April to September) 2013–2016 is compared to the motion obtained with the original parameterization. The cells are classified as right-moving or leftmoving supercells due to their motion direction with regard to the vertical wind shear of the environment, which is calculated using high-resolution model analyses. Afterwards, the accuracy of the parameterization is checked for both motion classes, as well as for classifications according to the lifetime, track length, and severity proxies of the cells. Clear differences between observed and parameterized motion are obtained for all categories, calling for an adjustment of the parameterization in a second step. This adjusted parameterization improves the storm motion estimation for most of the storm categories. A better storm motion estimation improves the calculation of storm-relative helicity, enabling a more reliable nowcasting and forecasting of supercell potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The paper aims to disentangle the factors behind territorial disparities in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case fatality ratio, focusing on the pressure put by the pandemic on healthcare services and adopting a spatial perspective. Design/methodology/approach: Multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models have been used for uncovering the spatial variability in the impact of healthcare services on COVID-19 case fatality ratio, allowing authors to better capture the real spatial patterns at local level. The authors proved that this approach yields better results, and the MGWR model outperforms traditional regression methods. The selected case studies are two of the biggest UE countries, among the first affected by a high incidence of COVID-19 cases, namely Italy and Germany. Findings: The authors found sizeable regional differences in COVID-19 mortality rates within each of the analysed countries, and the stress borne by local healthcare systems seems to be the most powerful factor in explaining them. In line with other studies, the authors found additional factors of influence, such as age distribution, gender ratio, population density and regional development. Originality/value: This research clearly indicated that COVID-19 related deaths are strongly associated with the degree of resilience of the local healthcare systems. The authors supply localized results on the factors of influence, useful for assisting the decision-makers in prioritizing limited healthcare resources. The authors provide a scientific argument in favour of the decentralization of the pandemic management towards local authorities not neglecting, however, the necessary regional or national coordination. Purpose: This paper aims to evaluate the market concentration and competition in the European Banking Sector using an integrated multi-criteria decision-making approach under the fuzzy environment. Design/methodology/approach: The hybrid model combining fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), fuzzy analytic network process (ANP) and fuzzy VIKOR methods is applied to measure the market competition and concentration in the European Banking Sector. For this purpose, two academicians and one expert from banking sector with at least five-year experiences are selected to evaluate the dimensions, criteria and alternatives. The academicians are also appointed to define the decision-making problem and determine the dimensions and the criteria on the basis of related literature. The implementation of the model has been constructed in three main phases. The first phase consists of the fuzzy DEMATEL technique for understanding the impact-relation map among the dimensions. The second phase includes the fuzzy ANP method for measuring the relative importance of the criteria. The last phase comprises the fuzzy VIKOR approach to rank the alternatives with the values of the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI). Findings: Turkey, France, England and Germany are placed in the competitive market structure of the European Banking Sector respectively. Additionally, the comparative results of the study confirm the market shares and the competitive policies of the European and Turkish Banking Sector. Originality/value: The novelty of the paper is to construct a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making model with the proposed HHI scales under the fuzzy environment and defined competition dimensions and criteria based on the literature for the European Banking Industry. The shut-down of nuclear power plants and the general shift from fossil to regenerative energies lead to an increase of disparity between energy production and energy consumption in Germany. Because of the immense acceptance problems among the public against overhead lines and underground cables new solutions are needed. After considering various options the idea of a tunnel along the highway for the electricity transmission was selected within a VDE study as a promising option. Since joints are expensive and a source of failure and the transportation of cables that are longer than one kilometer is barely possible on land, on-site production is considered as an alternative.
