This article focuses on Ben Shahn's paintings. Ben Shahn's Gift, though indisputable, is rarely effective beyond a surface felicity. What his retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art makes all too clear is how lacking his art is in density and resonance. These pictures are mere stitching on the border of the cloth of painting, little flashes of talent that have to be shaded from the glare of high tradition lest they disappear from sight. On the whole Shahn's art seems to have improved with time. The later pictures become more sensitive and more painterly. According to the author, his social consciousness has at the same time become less prominent and does not play much of a role in later paintings.
