- Abstract
The article reviews the book "K-vonal. Uralmi elit s luxus a szocializmusban" (K-line: ruling elites and luxury under socialism) by Gyorgy Majtenyi. The book describes the everyday life of the Communist Party elite in Hungary, from the clothing they wore to the cars they drove, emphasizing, among other things, hunting, football, and the life of the Stakhanovite workers. The ‘K-line’ refers to the type of telephone line connecting the Communist ruling stratum with the Party cadres (kader in Hungarian) of the provinces. Participation in hunting in particular became a way of advancing one’s career in the party. One of the book’s notable revelations is that the new Communist elite, far from eschewing the bourgeois luxuries of the previous Horthy-era elite, in fact grew fond of them and made them their own.
