The introduction points out that the first monograph on the species (1930) had 32 pages, followed by an expanded NBB edition in 1951; in 1967 a different author produced NBB375 with 156 pages, followed by two expanded editions in 1985 and 1988, the latter with 236 pages. By presenting their significance in stories, songs and dance, and other practices, recorded through ethnographic accounts detailing 87 bird species, this book reveals the diverse ways in which birds feature prominently in the indigenous cultures of the Upper Missouri. The first volume of BWP was published in 1977: by the time the last volume appeared in 1994 much of what had been written in Volume I was seriously out-of-date.
