To use another term that Olwig employs and originating with Pareto's reading of Marx, Christaller's landscape is "bat-like" because it brings together two separate landscapes to form a new (monstrous) entity, just as a bat is the seeming union of two separate species, a bird and a mouse. All the myriad ways landscape is substantive is the central focus in I The Meanings of Landscape i , which brings together many (but far from all) of Ken's greatest hits within a single volume. In Ken's case, of course, this search for origins had led him to find the substantive nature of landscape not among the rising merchant capitalists building their villas and landscaping their grounds in the I terra firma i of the Veneto and the lowlands of westernmost Europe (where Denis Cosgrove and any number of art historians have found it), but among the forests, lakes, fields, and I tings i of the Scandinavian peninsula. Furthermore, Sauer, like Olwig, saw dangers in Geography's turn to modern scientific reasoning, particularly acute during the 1950s and 1960s, and inspired in part by the "diabolical" German spatial scientist Walter Christaller (who features in the last two chapters of Olwig's book). In contrast to a lot of food ethics and public health nutrition literature, Pelluchon emphasizes the importance of taste and pleasure as part of nourishment. The ethical relevance of Pelluchon's emphasis on nourishment is that, "prior to the face-to-face encounter with the Other, as soon as I stand in relation to nourishment, I am already in the domain of ethics" (13). Maybe the hardback edition contains illustrations rendered in a quality that matches the text, but the paperback edition reviewed here reproduces Williams' own photographs in a very lacklustre form. The contrast with the production quality of Spiro Kostof's ([5]) classic book about what shapes cities is pronounced, but should not deter those interested in learning from Williams. This book synthesises and analyses numismatic evidence from territories north of the Eastern Roman Empire in the Early Byzantine period. This ambitious study, by a retired teacher and professor whose previous books have centred on 19th- and 20th-century defences, is the first of two volumes, the second highlighted in the Preface and Conclusion as I Castle to Fortress i and covering Iberia to Italy, from Reconquista to Renaissance. This is an excellent volume overall, bringing together a group of scholars who have produced an interesting and stimulating book. The first of the volume's ten chapters provides clear context: Chapter 1, "The PPG16 Era", also outlines the aims of the AIP, while Chapter 2 focuses on trends in investigations since 1990, in terms of numbers, geography, types and those overseeing the work (contractors, consultants, etc); next are reviews of planning and briefs (Ch 3), environmental assessments (Ch 4), and actual mitigative studies, including building recording surveys (Ch 5). There is no focus in this volume on archaeology by period, though a few tables and graphs identify period representation in recorded field evaluations (eg tab 3.16, showing "medieval" averaging 19% and "early medieval" 3% - roughly matching PAS finds' percentages). Nitzan-Shiftan vividly contributes another critical piece to unlocking the Jerusalem puzzle by studying the intertwined relationship between architecture, planning, and politics.
