Hart returns to Gregory of Nyssa and pines for an alternative version of Christian history where the church hitched its theology to Gregory instead of Augustine (138). The first is how Hart himself defines words like love, justice, goodness, and even hell. Given the nature of God, Hart says that 'God... is wholly capable of determining the result of all secondary causes, including free will, while not acting as yet another discrete cause among them' (184). Due to the availability of sources, in this section Verellen is also able to introduce detailed analysis of individual encounters with Daoist rituals, in what he labels "lay religion." After tracing the sources and filiations of Daoist ritual, Verellen shows how the Daoist Retreat and Offering rites were integrated into a single liturgical program, which to a large extent still informs current Daoist ritual (224-28). Delmulle points repeatedly to the indisputable fact that in all of the analysed aspects of I Contra Collatorem i one can observe deep similarities to Augustine's polemical works, especially to the anti-Pelagian ones. Delmulle concludes that Prosper constructed a historical narrative in which the process of condemning the Pelagian controversy, started by Augustine and culminating in the decisions of the bishops of Rome, could simultaneously be perceived as one of "officialisation de l'augustinisme" (p. 237). This article focuses on the book "Women and Human Development: The Capabilities Approach," written by Martha C. Nussbaum. At a time when the notion of universal values is coming under attack from a variety of positions, Martha Nussbaum's new book is a rigorously argued attempt to defend the ideal. Taking cognizance of many of the criticisms made of universalism, Nussbaum drafts a credo that tries not to be blind to complexity, as she concedes certain forms of obtuse universalizing can be. Nussbaum's is a refreshing corrective, attempting to reinstate the legitimacy of expectations of social responsibility from governments. The fact that some universal approaches are obtuse does not indict them all, urges Nussbaum. Women in developing nations are central to this project in two ways, both as people who suffer pervasively from acute capability failure' and also as people whose situation provides a test of this and other approaches, showing the problems they solve or fail to solve. Thus the capabilities approach is fully universal, and Nussbaum makes an argument for a feminist practice of philosophy that is strongly universalist, committed to cross-cultural norms of justice, equality and rights, and at the same time, sensitive to local particularity, and to the many ways in which circumstances shape.
