Offering several intriguing and entertaining case studies written in a light style, I Everyday Nationalism in Hungary (1789-1867) i is clearly an excellent contribution to the history of everyday nationalism with notable methodological results in matters of nationalism studies. Alexander Maxwell's book on everyday nationalism in Hungary grew out of well-researched papers and his continuous interest in nineteenth-century nation-building across Europe. Even though Maxwell wishes to avoid a teleological and progressive narrative of Hungarian everyday nationalism, there is obviously a substantial difference between the period before and after the 1840s in how banal nationalism is created, circulated, interpreted, and experienced in Hungary. It is revealing that neither Leerssen nor even the monograph of his Brill series on Hungarian operatic nationalism by Krisztina Lajosi ( I Opera and Nationalism in nineteenth Century Hungary i ) receives any reference in Maxwell's - otherwise very well-informed - book.
