Modernities of subtraction, Aranda contends, offer a distinct and challenging paradigm for understanding early Mexican American literature; at the same time, they emblematize the challenge that Mexican American literature poses to American studies. Aranda argues that early Mexican American writing illuminates what Walter Mignolo calls "colonial difference", which Aranda defines as "the space where those who are the targets of colonialism create strategies to [diagnose] and resist their own subjugation" (2). Drugs on the Page: Pharmacopoeias and Healing Knowledge in the Early Modern Atlantic World: Edited by Matthew James Crawford and Joseph M. Gabriel. Through his study of the first official pharmacopoeia of the Spanish Empire, the I Pharmacopoeia Matritensis i , Matthew Crawford argues that its history is best understood as part of a process of hybridisation of multiple healing knowledges. Although often considered in opposition, in this context secret remedies and pharmacopoeias could be seen as interdependent, with commercial success dependent on how a drug was positioned in the pharmaceutical marketplace.
