Recent scholarship on the Latin epigrammatist Martial recognises the complex intratextuality that weaves his twelve numbered books into an authored whole, notably through "cycles" of poems that develop particular characters and themes within individual books and across the corpus as a whole. The present article analyses one such thematic cycle: Martial's poems on plagiarism, previously studied by (inter alia) McGill (2012), Rimell (2008), Seo (2009), and Spahlinger (2004), who already find self-aggrandisement in Martial's uniquely unpoetic fixation on alleged plagiarists. Further investigation finds reflexive intertextuality with the Greek satirical epigrammatist Lucillius. In Book 6, Martial "plagiarises" Lucillian originals that concern theft and disguise, the standard figures for plagiarism in ancient literary criticism. Across the corpus, Martial develops the plagiarism theme to craft a fallible and self-contradictory persona that aligns epigram with Roman satire, as subsequently practised by his literary heir, Juvenal. The article presents information about the book "Stolen Words: Forays Into the Origins and Ravages of Plagiarism," by Thomas Mallon. Thomas Mallon in Stolen Words is undaunted by the psychological and philosophical problems that cluster around the idea of plagiarism. He examines several major cases, from the eighteenth century to the present, and weaves in and around them a wealth of quaint and curious lore. Mallon has much to say about the unhappy psychology of the plagiarist. Mallon worries that the law's propensity to victimize good Samaritans protects the plagiarist from exposure.

A review of the book "Mary McCarthy: The Complete Fiction," by Mary McCarthy, edited by Thomas Mallon, is presented.

The article argues that the poem entitled "O Baal, Hear Us!," by Rudyard Kipling reflects plagiarism. Nine lines of Kipling's poem, first published on July 18, 1888 in the periodical "The Pioneer," is compared to lines from the the 1850 closet-drama "Phrontisterion" by Henry Longueville Mansel. A comparison with the political satire aspects of both works is explored.

This article explores poetic practices of copying and recycling that follow a "cannibalistic" logic. Taking a cue from theories of literary relationality elaborated by Edward Said, Haroldo De Campos, Oswald De Andrade, Édouard Glissant, Jorge Luis Borges, and Marcus Boon, I examine innovations in the work of poets such as Mónica de la Torre, Timothy Donnelly, Terrance Hayes, Mark McMorris, Haryette Mullen, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Wendy Walker. While it is unusual to read North American poetry in connection with postcolonial and Latin American literary theory, my article's method enacts the same kind of poetic circuit that I am interested in exploring. Seeking to build on recent comparative approaches to twentieth-century poetry I argue that tracing dialogues and conceptual affinities across linguistic and regional boundaries is crucial for understanding the development of experimental poetics in the American Hemisphere.
