"The Eyes of the World: Mining the Digital Age in the Eastern DR Congo" by James H. Smith is an ethnographic monograph that explores the lives and experiences of artisanal miners in the war-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The book examines the role of 3 T minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten) in the production of advanced technologies and their reputation as conflict minerals. Smith argues that transparency initiatives implemented by the international mining industry have undermined the generative potential of artisanal mining and created a sense of being followed and monitored by outsiders. The book also provides a detailed analysis of the history and conflicts surrounding the Bisie tin mine. Overall, "The Eyes of the World" offers new perspectives on the socio-cultural dimensions of mining, the relationship between mineral extraction and conflict, and the mining-development nexus.
