For those of us who do not read Swedish, this is a welcome English-language Plutarchian biography of Torbern Bergman (1735-1784) and Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786). However, Lennartson wonderfully translates a couple of reactions that Bergman represented symbolically into modern nomenclature, illustrating, aside from the symbols themselves, how nothing has changed (p. 275). This is all very necessary especially for a general reader, but I would query how that general reader would deal with some of the complex chemical equations or molecular structures included to show, in modern chemical symbols, what Scheele and Bergman did (e.g. pp. 216, 335).
