In a [5] article (Thomas & Lennon [5]), it was observed that for birds "[t]he northern margins of southerly species have moved north by an average of 18.9 km in 20 years", but "the southern margins of northerly species have not shifted consistently." The sunny disposition in this book contrasts with his own highly cited article, "Extinction Risk from Climate Change" that predicted 15-37% of species will be at risk due to climatic change (Thomas et al. [6]). Extinction debt is the phenomenon in which a habitat can have enhanced biodiversity, above its natural capacity, because the species "committed to extinction" have not yet gone extinct (Thomas et al. [6]). But be doubtful though - be very doubtful - of the more radical remarks claiming that the other scientists (such as invasion ecologists) have it all wrong, that invasive species are just going to enrich ecosystems or that climate change is going to increase biodiversity. Invasive Aliens: the Plants and Animals from Over There that Are Over Here by Dan Eatherley (2019) 336 pp., William Collins, London, UK. Although alarm about invasive species is relatively recent, Eatherley demonstrates that introduced aliens have been liberally sprinkled by us around the world throughout human history, and even before that. The conservationist-led operation to remove grey squirrels is not anti them, it is pro the native red squirrel, which is being banished by its larger, disease-carrying cousin.
