The chapter covers the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention (UNCLOS) which governs the Central Arctic Ocean as well as other oceans and seas around the world, the development of the Arctic Environment Protection Strategy (AEPS) in the early '90s, and ultimately the establishment of the Arctic Council in 1996. Chapter 2 (The physical environment) gives a brief geological and climatic history of the Arctic (temporary sea ice only beginning to appear around 47 million years ago) before explaining the contemporary Arctic climate in more detail. For islands, which have proved essential in the development of biogeography theory, the focus is on species-area and species-isolation relationships that underpin the equilibrium theory of island biogeography developed by MacArthur and Wilson, and other seminal advances that many researchers and students of biogeography will be familiar with.
