Highlights from the article: In chapter 1 Lombardi insists, in a way that reminds us of Plato's body-mind dualism, on the "limits enforced by our body: an area that might provoke specific conflicts that make us slaves, and also prisoners, of our very concrete nature" (p. 14). Lombardi suggests a concept of dissociation connected to the very human nature of having a body: corporeality (or bodyhood), in its various expressions, must be in harmony with psychic life. But if we do not clarify the specific causative contribution of the body-mind conflict that we can see in the various psychopathologies we deal with, we will never know whether dissociation must be seen as the etiological basis of any psychopathology whatever, or only of psychotic or more severe psychopathologies; or whether it is, rather, an inevitable concomitant aspect of some pathologies. What seems most unclear in Lombardi's model regarding the actual causative contribution of dissociation - in the meaning Lombardi assigns it - is an insufficiently differentiated use of the notion of body.
