Abstract

These studies demonstrate the versatility of a compact X-ray Hartmann wavefront sensor, allowing the ability to automatically align focusing X-ray optics such as a compound refractive lens, and to control active optics for optimizing the focal spot. Hartmann X-ray wavefront sensors (HWS) have been used for extreme wavefront precision metrology for today's most advanced scientific research. Fourth generation synchrotrons and X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) are facilities offering diffraction-limited X-ray beams to a very wide community of users pushing the limits of the science of X-ray-matter interaction. Abstract

Thus, material properties in "conventional" and X-ray optical systems are very different, leading to counter-intuitive results: for example, converging X-ray refractive elements do not appear as bi-convex elements but rather bi-concave elements. These two chapters would not be out of place in a traditional electromagnetism/optics course, but the "great divide" brings a fresh perspective for the need to easily switch between different models of optics: rays, waves, or photons. A common theme in this chapter, as in others, is a "conventional" presentation of a topic (say, reflective optics) followed by a counter-intuitive explanation about how to implement the topic in X-ray optical systems (in this example, grazing incidence).
