The article discusses two recent books, "Bootstrapped" by Alissa Quart and "Hijacked" by Elizabeth Anderson, that explore the concept of essential work. Both authors argue that essential work is important and should be recognized, but they have different approaches to understanding and addressing it. Anderson traces the history of the work ethic and advocates for a progressive work ethic that values all types of work. Quart examines the contradictions of the American Dream and calls for a shift away from individualism towards interdependence. The article raises questions about what makes a job essential and the menial nature of much essential work, suggesting that a reevaluation of work and a reduction in its necessity may be needed.
