Viruses are the main pathogenic substances that cause severe diseases in humans and other living things. They are among the most common microorganisms, and consequently, antiviral drugs have emerged to prevent and treat viral infections. Antiviral drugs are an essential drug group considering their prescription and consumption rates for different diseases and indications. Therefore, it is crucial to develop accurate and precise analytical methods to detect antiviral drugs in various matrices. Chromatographic techniques are used frequently for the quantification purpose since they allow simultaneous determination of antivirals. Electrochemical methods have also gained importance since the analysis can be performed quickly without the need for pretreatment. Spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric methods are used because they are simple, inexpensive, and less time-consuming methods. The purpose of this review is to present an overview of the analysis of currently used antiviral drugs from 2010 to 2021. Since studies on antiviral drugs are numerous, selected publications were reviewed in this article. The analysis of antiviral drugs was divided into three main groups: chromatographic, spectrometric, and electrochemical methods which were applied to different matrices, including pharmaceutical, biological, and environmental samples. Environmental challenges and preference of high-yielding breeds have resulted in extinction of various local cattle populations as well as the loss of genetic diversity in modern cattle breeds. Genetic diversity, however, plays a vital role both in cattle industry to meet current and future demand for milk and beef and in adaptation to different environmental challenges for animals. Thanks to developing molecular genetics and bioinformatics tools, genetic data including microsatellites and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) can be detected across the genome and can be analysed to reveal genetic diversity within and between cattle populations. Until recently, microsatellite markers were commonly used to estimate genetic diversity in both local and exotic cattle breeds. Today, however, SNP arrays are the most preferred technology for genetic diversity analysis, since they are time-efficient and easy to access and apply. Moreover, developments in sequencing technology with affordable costs have made it possible to obtain SNP data across the genome via whole genome resequencing. It is foreseen that whole genome resequencing will be routinely used to estimate genetic diversity periodically not only in cattle but also in the other livestock species as well in the future. In this study, the most commonly preferred molecular methods to reveal genetic diversity in cattle were discussed and some bioinformatics tools to analyse genetic data were summarised. Background: Biallelic pathogenic variants in the SCARB2 gene have been associated with action myoclonus-renal failure (AMRF) syndrome. Even though SCARB2 associated phenotype has been reported to include typical neurological characteristics, depending on the localization and the feature of the pathogenic variants, clinical course and the presentations have been shown to differ. Case presentation: Whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis revealed a homozygous truncating variant (p.N45MfsX88) in SCARB2 gene in the index case, and subsequent sanger sequencing analysis validated the variant in all affected family members from a Turkish family with the clinical characteristics associated with AMRF and related disorders. Intrafamilial clinical heterogeneity with common features including dysarthria, tremor and proteinuria, and distinct features such as peripheral neuropathy (PNP), myoclonus and seizures between the affected cases, was observed in the family. In-depth literature review enabled the detailed investigation of the reported variants associated with AMRF and suggested that while the type of the variant did not have a major impact on the course of the clinical characteristics, only the C terminal localization of the pathogenic variant significantly affected the clinical presentation, particularly the age at onset (AO) of the disease. Conclusions: In this study we showed that biallelic SCARB2 pathogenic variants might cause a spectrum of common and distinct features associated with AMRF. Of those features while the common features include myoclonus (100%), ataxia (96%), tonic clonic seizures (82%), dysarthria (68%), tremor (65%), and renal impairment (62%), the uncommon features involve PNP (17%), hearing loss (6.8%), and cognitive impairment (13.7%). AO has been found to be significantly higher in the carriers of the p.G462DfsX34 pathogenic variant. SCARB2 pathogenic variants have not been only implicated in AMRF but also in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and Gaucher disease (GD), suggesting the importance of genetic and functional studies in the clinical and the diagnostic settings. Given the proven role of SCARB2 gene in the pathogenesis of AMRF, PD and GD with a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms, investigation of the possible modifiers, such as progranulin and HSP7, has a great importance. Metal ions are discharged from various industrial effluents, causing an adverse effect on the human health and environment. Although numerous technologies are employed to treat these effluents, the biosorption process is a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective method of removing metal ions. Agricultural biomasses are a type of biosorbent that has a number of advantages, including their low cost, natural availability, and ease of collection and use as adsorbents. The purpose of this review paper is to demonstrate the utilization of pistachio shell as an agricultural biomass for metal ion removal from aqueous solutions. The preparation of raw and modified forms of this biosorbent is addressed. Under optimal experimental settings, the adsorption capability of the pistachio shell is demonstrated, and its characterization and possible application as a bisorbent are discussed. In addition, the isotherm and equilibrium constants for metal ion adsorption by the pistachio shell are considered. Overall, these considerations demonstrate the significant potential of adsorbents originated from pistachio shells for metal ion removal from aqueous solutions. Phthalocyanines are aromatic or macrocyclic organic compounds and attract great attention due to their numerous properties. They have many high-tech applications in different areas of the industry such as dyestuffs, thermal printing screens, photovoltaic solar cells, membrane catalytic reactors, semiconductor materials and gas sensors. In the last decade, electrochemical sensor studies have accelerated with the catalytic lighting. It plays a dominant role in the development and implementation of new generation sensors. The aim of this study is to review the electrochemical methods based on electrode modification with phthalocyanines and to shed light on new application areas of phthalocyanines. The focal point was based on the sensor applications of phthalocyanines in the determination of drugs, pesticides, organic materials and metals etc. by electrochemical methods. Experimental conditions and some validation parameters of the sensor applications such as metal phthalocyanine types, indicator electrodes, selectivity, working ranges, detection limits, and analytical applications were discussed. Consequently, this is the first review dealing with the applications of phthalocyanines in electrochemical sensors for the sensitive determination of analytes in a variety of matrices. A previously healthy 7-year-old female patient was admitted with pain and swelling in her left knee and fever. She had injured her left knee 2 weeks ago. Her mother had noticed a protrusion on her knee that she had thought to be associated with a fracture. After being examined by an orthopaedist, fracture was ruled out and the protrusion disappeared. On her admission with fever and painful swollen knee, Pantoea agglomerans was identified in the synovial fluid. On the basis of the close association of P. agglomerans infections with penetrating trauma, the patient and her mother were asked about a history of penetration during the fall, but they denied any possible penetration of a vegetative element since she had fallen on a concrete floor. Although she was treated with antibiotics reported to be sensitive in the antibiogram, she had recurrent septic arthritis. Repeated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretations revealed a foreign body in the medial aspect of the left knee. The patient underwent arthrotomy and a plant thorn was removed. The postoperative course was uneventful. We reported this case to emphasize that a vegetative foreign body should be kept in mind in septic arthritis caused by P. agglomerans and/or in those resistant to antibiotics. The aim of this paper is to assess the current status of processing biodegradable metals (BDM) via selective laser melting (SLM), with particular emphasis on bone scaffold applications, and provide a meta-analysis on the effect of processing parameters on relative density to better direct recommendations for the future of this growing field. Synthetic bone scaffolds are becoming a popular alternative for the treatment of critical bone defects that cannot heal without surgical intervention. These scaffolds act as a bridge allowing bone to grow across the gap. Selective laser melting can achieve bone scaffolds with complex hierarchical architecture tailored specifically to the patient. SLM-manufactured titanium scaffolds have already been clinically tested with some success. Permanent titanium alloys have a higher chance of implant rejection from the innate immune reaction, coupled with complications linked to the high mismatch in stiffness between the implant and the bone. Biodegradable metals can overcome these problems by maintaining sufficient mechanical properties for load-bearing applications during healing and eventually degrade away completely. Currently, however, the use of SLM for the manufacturing of BDM scaffolds is still in its infancy as only a few peer-reviewed studies are published, with the majority of these published in the last couple of years. Literature was systematically reviewed to critically analyze and synthesize the data in the form of a meta-analysis. Only studies that included the processing parameters used for volumetric energy density (namely the laser power, scan speed, hatch spacing, and energy density) and provided as built relative densities were used. SLM of biodegradable metals is an exciting research area that requires further exploration. Apart from overcoming the problems unique to each major biodegradable metal family, the meta-analysis showed that the vast majority of studies regard the optimization of SLM processing parameters. However, these studies are specific to the powder and machine used. The Cimmerian Continent is the narrow continental strip that rifted from the northeastern Gondwana-Land margin mostly during the Permian between the present-day Balkan regions and Indonesia and collided with the Laurasian margin sometime between the latest Triassic and the late Jurassic, in places possibly even in the earliest Cretaceous. In contrast to the initial definition and most subsequent models, the Cimmerian Continent did not leave Gondwana-Land in one piece, but such submarine platforms as the Sakarya, Menderes-Taurus and Kırşehir in Turkey, and what is herein called the Greater Lhasa from Afghanistan to Myanmar began separating both from Gondwana-Land and from the rest of the Cimmerian Continent at about the same time during the Permian. By contrast, the northern part of the Cimmerian Continent remained as a large, single-piece, island arc-type ribbon continent from Turkey to Malaysia comprising the units of the Rhodope-Pontide Fragment in Turkey, most of Transcaucasia and Iran, the Farah, western Qiangtang, Bao-Shan and the Shan States blocks and western Thailand and Malaysia throughout its independent history. This coherent 'ribbon continent', perhaps the largest documented in earth history, was almost wholly an ensialic arc only in places having generated Mariana-type ensimatic offspring. Thus, the northern margin of the Cimmerian Continent was of Pacific-type and not Atlantic-type as claimed by many authors in the literature. Naming its various parts individually helps description but should not be allowed to mislead interpretations in terms of individual, so-called 'terranes', as often happens. It seems that many of the oceanic basins that opened within and behind the Cimmerian Continent, including the Neo-Tethys, were back-arc basins and the Cimmerian continent had a serpentine motion as it traversed the Tethyan realm. It is therefore impossible to reconstruct synthetic isochrons to track the northerly migration of the large ribbon continent (except for purposes of simple visualisation of the journey of the Cimmerian Continent across the Tethyan realm). The Cimmerian Continent also had a complex internal tectonics, involving much along the strike-slip faulting, presumed to have been controlled by the age, subduction angle, rate of subduction, and the topography of the floor of the Palaeo-Tethys. Lobular capillary hemangioma, which is also named as pyogenic granuloma, is a common vascular proliferation of skin and mucous membranes. Hormonal influence in the development of lobular capillary hemangioma on the mucosal surfaces has been demonstrated but for cutaneous lesions located on the skin, this association has not been shown yet. In this report, a 25-year-old female patient with cutaneous lobular capillary hemangioma of the cheek induced by pregnancy is presented. The lesion was excised and lobular capillary hemangioma was given as diagnosis by histopathological evaluation. Estrogen receptor was weakly positive by immunohistochemical analysis. We suggest that elevated levels of estrogens during pregnancy may have an important role also on the development of cutaneous lobular capillary hemangiomas by direct hormonal action. Yvette Christiansë (2003: 373) argues that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission neglected daily narratives of loss in favour of an attempt of a nationwide process of mourning and a subsequent closure of the apartheid past. One account of quotidian losses certainly is Marlene van Niekerk’s novelAgaat(2004), which focuses on the relationship between the white farm owner Milla and her coloured servant Agaat. Throughout the story, Milla attempts to turn Agaat into a “refined” coloured, maintain control over her body and sexuality. This alienation leads to losses on Milla’s part, especially the emotional loss of a potential mother-daughter bond. Because the story is told from Milla’s perspective, Agaat’s voice is largely silenced. It has often been noted that Agaat uses mimicry in order to subvert Milla’s rule. However, critics have largely overlooked Agaat’s discriminatory behaviour towards the other coloured farm workers. By drawing on Anne Cheng’s concept of racial melancholia, I argue that this behaviour can be seen as Agaat’s attempt of melancholically repressing a part of her coloured identity which she has to negate in order to gain acceptance by Milla. The latter’s melancholia manifests through the incorporation of Agaat as her lost object of love and the simultaneous rejection of Agaat’s racialised body. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Eur J Haematol 2004: 72: 285–291. © Blackwell Munksgaard 2004. Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the spleen is a rare benign tumor with unknown etiology. It causes problems in the diagnosis because of mimicking some hematopoetic malignancies. Here we report the case of a 36-yr-old woman complaining of nausea and insomnia. Laboratory investigations were limited to increase of leukocyte and thrombocyte count. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed circumscribed solid lobulated mass, measuring about 6.5 cm in diameter, located in the dorsal region of the spleen. Splenectomy was performed with the differential diagnosis including hamartoma and lymphoma of the spleen. Histological examination of the sharply demarcated splenic mass consisted of myofibroblasts and admixture of inflammatory cells. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were performed. IPT of the spleen was diagnosed. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) was detected in the tumor by in situ hybridization. This rare entity is presented because of its clinical, radiological and pathological difficulties in the differential diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
