Abstract

In Chapter 5, "Romance by Other Means", the authors consider four of Chaucer's I Canterbury Tales i in which that poet not only juxtaposes parallel worlds but strains the conventions of the romance genre itself. The Knapps have a I prima facie i case for the prophetic power of medieval romance, since at least one famous (though fictional) romancer, Chaucer's Wife of Bath, is wonderfully expressive of her desires for the future - and not just for a sixth husband, "meeke, yonge, and fresh abedde." The Knapps insist that the art of medieval romance has by no means "failed" for them - "The long history of fascination these romances have generated is simply explained: they are beautiful" (p. 20) - but the authors go on to suggest that the lasting contribution of the genre rests not primarily in its aesthetic charm but in its intellectual ambition. Abstract

Peter Brown picks up this theme of Chaucer's creative responsiveness to his expanding world in the introduction to I A New Companion to Chaucer i , mentioned above, supported by forty other scholars on thirty-six topics in Chaucer studies, organized for convenience in alphabetical order. Chaucer's readers in the fifteenth century were as bemused by this poem as the dreamer by his dream, unsure what to make of it, at least when compared to the enthusiasm with which they copied Chaucer's later works. Over the last muddy mile into Canterbury, Chaucer's Parson reminds his fellow-pilgrims of the penitential purpose of their journey, that they are all actually both the authors and protagonists of their own life-stories. William Blake, another Londoner, believed the poet had captured every type of human being among his Canterbury pilgrims, but Chaucer's travelers resist easy type-casting.
