In Heidegger and his Anglo-American Reception, John Rogove and Pietro D'Oriano have compiled nineteen essays discussing or displaying Heidegger's influence on anglophone philosophy. The collection includes papers taking a pragmatist approach to the interpretation of Heidegger, as well as papers taking a continentalist approach. In this way, the editors hope to begin to overcome the mutual isolation in which these two prevailing anglophone approaches to Heidegger scholarship have been carried out. Topics treated in these essays are wide-ranging, including examples of English-language Heidegger interpretation, historical and philosophical accounts of the introduction of Heideggerian thought to anglophone academia, and critical analyses of the ways in which Heidegger's thought has been adopted by Anglo-American commentators. A New Philosophy of Discourse: Language Unbound, by Joshua Kates, examines a range of philosophical, literary, and literary‐theoretical approaches in attempting to formulate a view of language sheerly as individual events. Kates considers works from philosophers including Martin Heidegger and Hans‐Georg Gadamer in the Continental tradition; Donald Davidson and W. V. O. Quine in the analytic tradition of philosophy of language; and such "crossovers" (an arguable categorization) as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Stanley Cavell, Cora Diamond, and Martha Nussbaum. The book also investigates the work of literary scholars including Mary Poovey, Charles Altieri, Paul de Man, Walter Benn Michaels, and Steven Knapp, among others. In each instance, the thinkers under scrutiny offer some support for the new philosophy of discourse that Kates proposes but fall short of the radicality of his anti‐foundational, anti‐structural approach. Kates coins the term "talk!" as a way to refer to language in an anti‐foundational vein. The new philosophy of "talk!" proposed here emphasizes the shortcomings of the wide range of authors with respect to thinking of language as only its instances, begging the question of what avenues of thought the new philosophy opens. The article titled "The Voice of Misery. A Continental Philosophy of Testimony" is a review of Gert-Jan Van der Heiden's book that addresses the topic of testimony from a philosophical perspective. The author highlights that testimony and the witness are subjects present in both analytical and continental philosophy, but a specific study on testimony in contemporary philosophy was lacking. Violence, Slavery and Freedom between Hegel and Fanon is a volume of secondary literature that dispels common misconceptions about the relationship between Hegelian and Fanonian philosophy, and sheds new light on the connections and divergences between the two thinkers. By engaging in close textual analyses of both Hegel and Fanon, the chapters in this volume disambiguate the philosophical relation between Sartre and Fanon, scrutinize the conflation of Self-Consciousness in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit and subjectivity in Hegel's Lectures on the Philosophy of History in light of Hegel's reception in decolonial thought, and flesh out the pivotal ontological role of violence in Fanon's work. In particular, this volume underscores the necessity of Fanon scholars to pay heed to the distinction between Hegel's dialectic of lordship and bondage and Kojève's master-slave dialectic, as the latter—an anthropological (mis)interpretation of a Hegelian epistemological gestalt of consciousness—is what enables Fanon to engage with the former as a historical dialectic. This review emphasizes that Violence, Slavery and Freedom between Hegel and Fanon is a pedagogically significant text, and ultimately concludes that this volume is a vital resource for Continental Philosophical scholarship on Fanon and Hegel.
