Justin Remhof defends a constructivist interpretation of Nietzsche's view regarding the metaphysics of material objects. First, I describe an attractive feature of Remhof's interpretation. Since Nietzsche seems to be a constructivist about whatever sort of value he accepts, a constructivist account of objects would fit into a nicely unified overall metaphysical theory. Second, I explore various options for developing the constructivist view of objects. In his book Nietzsche's Constructivism: A Metaphysics of Material Objects Justin Remhof defends, using resources from Nietzsche's thought, the constructivist view that all objects themselves are constitutively dependent (i.e. dependent for being what they essentially are) on human representational practices. I offer several criticisms of this defense. First, I criticize aspects of Remhof's defense of the plausibility of such constitutive dependence - viz., his contention that constitutive dependence is (a) distinct from and more plausible than causal dependence, and (b) is compatible with the view that many objects would have existed even if human beings had never existed. Second, I criticize Remhof's contention that constructivism can provide a powerful and plausible solution to the problem of compositional vagueness. Specifically, I argue that human representational practices can't settle a broad enough range of boundary questions to alleviate the worries behind this problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In The Work of History: Constructivism and a Politics of the Past, Kalle Pihlainen pays tribute to Hayden White's work on narrative constructivism through a comprehensive and critical evaluation of his work. The book's seven chapters are based on previously published and reworked essays, starting with Pihlainen's 2013 essay on narrative truth and ending with his 2006 essay on the confines of the form. The Work of History is timely in light of some world political leaders' apparent immunity to facts, their use of history, and the role of power, as Pihlainen also discusses the ethics and politics of historical constructivism (xiii). At the same time, the book is "a meta‐critical enterprise," as White states in his foreword (x): it scrutinizes and explains White's work and its reception, including the debates on the production of knowledge, the ontological status of historiography, the various representations of history, and the kinds of audiences historians envision. Although narrative constructivism seems a bit passé, Pihlainen wants to further elaborate this theoretical approach to disentangle and explain some fundamental misconceptions about it that still exist among historians. One misconception is that constructivism inherently neglects the ethical impulse and supposedly lacks the potential for political engagement. This article examines the book "The Mismeasure of Desire: The Science, Theory and Ethics of Sexual Orientation," by Edward Stein, and in particular it concerns itself with the difficult ethical and legal issues that are present in it. The author believes that there is unclarity at the heart of Stein's account of natural human kinds and, in turn, of the essentialism/constructivism debate. Also the author offers a view as to how our society ought to handle the issue of sexual orientation in law and public policy. And then adds the assertion that America will not take that course any time soon. The author explains why many gays and lesbians feel that an appeal to the immutability of sexual orientation may help their cause in the public realm.
