Problems in training behavioral observers to a high degree of interindividual accuracy and intraindividual stability are fundamental concerns in descriptive research, as well as in provisions of behavioral intervention services. This article presents design characteristics of and results from three formative evaluations of an adaptive computerized expert system that shapes observation and recording skills and maximizes both individual coding accuracy and stability. The system, called Train-to-Code, allows instructors or trainers to import their own video source files and to code those videos using any appropriate descriptive behavioral-coding scheme. This generates customized expert reference data that automate subsequent training on the basis of an operant response-shaping instructional design model. Successful training relies on transitions through alternative levels of prompting and feedback designed to optimize ongoing performance until stable expert-equivalent levels of interobserver accuracy are maintained without prompting or feedback. The stop-signal paradigm is a useful tool for the investigation of response inhibition. In this paradigm, subjects are instructed to respond as fast as possible to a stimulus unless a stop signal is presented after a variable delay. However, programming the stop-signal task is typically considered to be difficult. To overcome this issue, we present software called STOP-IT, for running the stop-signal task, as well as an additional analyzing program called ANALYZE-IT. The main advantage of both programs is that they are a precompiled executable, and for basic use there is no need for additional programming. STOP-IT and ANALYZE-IT are completely based on free software, are distributed under the GNU General Public License, and are available at the personal Web sites of the first two authors or at expsy.ugent.be/tscope/stop.html. Background: Typically, randomization software should allow users to exert control over the different aspects of randomization including block design, provision of unique identifiers and control over the format and type of program output. While some of these characteristics have been addressed by available software, none of them have all of these capabilities integrated into one package. The main objective of the Random Allocation Software project was to enhance the user's control over different aspects of randomization in parallel group trials, including output type and format, structure and ordering of generated unique identifiers and enabling users to specify group names for more than two groups. Results: The program has different settings for: simple and blocked randomizations; length, format and ordering of generated unique identifiers; type and format of program output; and saving sessions for future use. A formatted random list generated by this program can be used directly (without further formatting) by the coordinator of the research team to prepare and encode different drugs or instruments necessary for the parallel group trial. Conclusions: Random Allocation Software enables users to control different attributes of the random allocation sequence and produce qualified lists for parallel group trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
