(p. 66) It could be argued against Bourdieu here, that this was precisely the point of Marx's theory of commodity fetishism, still to be understood as the key ideology of capitalist modernity. Be that as it may, Bourdieu interestingly argues that sociology tends to produce an objectivating and phenomenological analysis, and one which is closest to the thought of the dominated classes. Bourdieu acknowledges here Marx's importance in being the first sociologist of knowledge and in having demystified a basic mechanism of capitalism, namely, the general law of capital accumulation. Thus Marx, he claims, oscillated between two alternatives - first, a mechanistic developmental theory of the inevitability of explosion under conditions of crises and, second, a "spontaneist" theory of the development of class consciousness, particularly favoured by those Bourdieu calls "militants".
