Philip Cushman's collection of papers showcased in his recent book, "Travels with the Self: Interpreting Psychology as Cultural History" coalesce to form a strong critique of psychotherapist/psychoanalytic practitioners, and their compliance with socio-political norms and expectations. The Hietzing School and Red Vienna: Psychoanalysis and Progressive Social Reform: Freud/Tiffany: Anna Freud, Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham and the "Best Possible School", Edited by E. A. Danto & A. Steiner-Strauss (2019). Published in 2019, this deceptively small volume is a rich source for understanding the significance of the Hietzing School, founded in 1927 Vienna by Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham and Anna Freud. Even though Bob's diary only lasted for 22 days, his lengthy analysis with Anna Freud is described in some detail, and photographs of both Anna Freud and Bob's mother are included in this essay. The third essay in the volume, written by Elizabeth Danto herself, further corroborates how the 1927 opening of the Hietzing School was both symbolic of Red Vienna at that time and also, in retrospect, representative of the beginning of the end of progressive school reforms in that bastion of enlightened culture.
