The article focuses on the book "Social Mobility in the Caste System in India. An Interdisciplinary Symposium," edited by James Silverberg. Lipset and "The Origins of Canadian Politics: A Comparative Approach," by Gordon T. Stewart. Loyalists immigration to Canada gave the country its organizing principle. The U.S. has the most restrictive set of welfare provisions and the weakest labor movement in the industrial world. Electoral support for socialist politics is practically nonexistent. Social mobility through educational achievement, universalism in social relations, disrespect for authority and sectarian religious fervor are particularly strong. In Canada, by contrast, a vigorous labor movement, a socialist party with a considerable following, more particularism in social relations, and much less religious evangelism. Certainly, the two states have evolved Origins of Canadian Politics provides an interesting and even engaging, though perhaps not entirely convincing, reconstruction of a culturalist understanding of political developments in the northern country.
