Finally, in the last section of this chapter, the authors describe data swap and gradient approximation to address asymptotic normal estimation and efficient inference in the semi-LD approach. Moreover, each chapter has exercise problems, which are crucial issues in the authors' research work and, at the same time, help readers review the materials in each chapter. Different from the PLS in Chapter 7, the authors clearly introduce the structure of GGM and summarize several useful methods, such as penalized likelihood, a.k.a. graphical lasso, and the constrained l SB 1 sb -minimization for inverse matrix estimation. Chapter 6 discusses M-estimation with penalization, which is regarded as the generalization of least squares estimations and likelihood estimations in Chapters 4 and 5, and M-estimation enables us to deal with a large body of different types of data structures. 4. Histoplasmosis in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: 10 Years of Experience at a Large Transplant Center in an Endemic Area.

Abstract

Background. Many clinical scenarios have been encountered by patients who developed histoplasmosis after receiving a solid organ transplant at a large transplant center in an endemic area. Methods. Cases of posttransplantation histoplasmosis were identified by use of multiple methods, including reviews of microbiology test results, transplant databases, and billing codes. Data were obtained retrospectively. Descriptive statistics were used. Results. During the 1997-2007 study period, 3436 patients received a solid organ transplant, and 38 patients were identified as having posttransplantation histoplasmosis. Of these 38 patients, 9 were excluded from our study because the diagnosis was solely clinical. Of the remaining 29 patients, 14 had posttransplantation histoplasmosis (incidence, 1 case per 1000 person-years); 14 showed histologic evidence of histoplasmosis in the recipient or donor tissue, which was encountered unexpectedly at the time of transplantation; and 1 had histoplasmosis before receiving the transplant. Of the 14 patients who developed histoplasmosis after transplantation, 5 were heart transplant recipients, 3 were lung transplant recipients, 3 were kidney transplant recipients, 1 was a liver transplant recipient, 1 was a pancreas transplant recipient, and 1 was a kidney-pancreas transplant recipient. The median time from transplantation to diagnosis was 17 months (interquartile range, 8.1-46 months), and the median time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis 3 weeks (interquartile range, 1.9-6.5 weeks). All recipients had disseminated disease. The most common treatment was amphotericin B and itraconazole. All were cured, or still on treatment, but symptom-free. Of the 14 patients who had an explanted organ or donor tissue that showed histologic evidence of histoplasmosis, 13 (93%) were lung transplant recipients, and 1 (7%) was a liver transplant recipient. None of these patients developed active histoplasmosis, but all received prophylactic treatment. Finally, 1 patient had histoplasmosis before transplantation; he was treated with itraconazole 3 months before and after transplantation, and he did well. Conclusions. In conclusion, posttransplantation histoplasmosis is rare (1 case per 1000 transplant-personyears; 95% confidence interval, 0.6-1.7), even in endemic areas. Prognosis is good but requires protracted therapy. Patients with latent infection did not develop posttransplantation histoplasmosis when prophylaxis was used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: MSstats is an R package for statistical relative quantification of proteins and peptides in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. Version 2.0 of MSstats supports label-free and label-based experimental workflows and data-dependent, targeted and data-independent spectral acquisition. It takes as input identified and quantified spectral peaks, and outputs a list of differentially abundant peptides or proteins, or summaries of peptide or protein relative abundance. MSstats relies on a flexible family of linear mixed models.Availability and implementation: The code, the documentation and example datasets are available open-source at www.msstats.org under the Artistic-2.0 license. The package can be downloaded from www.msstats.org or from Bioconductor www.bioconductor.org and used in an R command line workflow. The article focuses on the book "Statistical Methods Applied to Economics and Business," by Frederick Cecil Mills. The writer of a text book on statistics has a difficult task to perform. There are two principal objectives or modes of treatment, first, exposition of the mathematical concepts which are an essential part of methods for handling statistical material and secondly, description of methods of gathering and collecting such material for use as a basis for conclusions. In applying either of these to any particular subject matter, the characteristics of the data with which the statistician is dealing must be kept in mind, since they may vitally affect the methods to be applied and the conclusions to be drawn. This is, indeed, the justification for a special treatise on statistics of economics and business as distinguished from general unspecialized treatises. The varying emphasis upon these two aspects of statistics by different writers helps to explain the great diversity in their methods of treatment and the difficulty of pleasing all who might use any particular work.
