The article discusses the book "Fundamentals of Objective Psychology," by J.F. Dashiell. "Psychology should form a science basic to the social sciences," says Dashiell in his book. Few, if any, social scientists would deny this assertion, but many of them act as though psychology were a subject of negligible importance. A physicist who had not studied higher mathematics or a biologist who had never taken a class in chemistry would be an object of academic ridicule. Not so with the social scientists; many of them are quite untrained in psychology, although admitting it to be a subject matter fundamental to their own specialties and rendering it at least a perfunctory verbal homage. This is a regrettable situation, but not a surprising one. Until quite recently psychologists had little of value to contribute to the sociologist, the political scientist, or the economist. Some psychologists and their followers gave impetus to the rapid development of psychology by their experiments describing and analyzing the structure of the mind but they contributed remarkably little to the social sciences. The physiology of the eye or the characteristics of a sound wave did not greatly interest those who were struggling to arrive at some understanding of crime or poverty or political disorganization.

The article focuses on the book "Life and the Student," by Charles Horton Cooley. To every student of the social sciences, especially to the sociologist, a new book by Cooley is an event of first importance. One of the best known sociologists in the U.S., he is probably the least prolific. His first book appeared over twenty-five years ago. Since then two others have followed at intervals of seven and nine years. Now, nine years after ,"Social Process," he has written another small volume, These four books, aside from two or three monographs and a few occasional papers, constitute his entire published work in over thirty years of active teaching and study. Few men in any field have written so little and yet have gained the reputation, if not fame, that Cooley enjoys. What he lacks in quantity he has more than made up for in quality, depth of insight; clarity, simplicity and conciseness of expression; beauty of diction and careful thoughtfulness. No one ever speaks of the "Cooley School." He has not gathered about him a group of younger men," who promote the peculiar doctrines of their master. His work has a catholicity and obvious validity which recommends it to all schools. Of the living sociologists, few are so likely to loom large fifty years from now.

The article focuses on the books "Goals of Economic Life," edited by A. Dudley Ward, and "Organizational Revolution: A Study in the Ethics of Economic Organization," by Kenneth E. Boulding. These are the first two volumes to be published in a series of six books on the ethics and economics of society, prepared under the auspices of the Rockefeller Foundation and a study committee of the Department of the Church and Economic Life of the National Council of Churches of Christ. Goals of Economic Life is a symposium in which 15 distinguished social scientists and theologians address themselves, in as many essays, to the problem of the current American value system and its dynamics. Besides some of the most famous American economists, there are papers by philosophers, a zoologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist and a sociologist. The study of the "Goals of Economic Life" reviews and synthesizes much of the recent research literature on the sociology of economic relations. It is an important addition to sociological theory and institutional interpretation.
