This study examines the remarkable decrease of higher-order births since the 1950s in Turkey using the revised value of children approach. The explanatory power of the benefits and costs attributed to children was tested for a sample of 701 mothers from Istanbul and two Turkish villages. The findings suggest that the lower risk for a third child is largely explained by the progressively lower contribution made by subsequent children to their mother's comfort and social esteem. This effect is greater for mothers who have benefited the most from the rapid socio-economic development that has taken place in Turkey over the last decades and who, on average, are better educated, have more economic resources, and live more frequently in urban settings. In contrast, children's contribution to mothers' affection and stimulation and child-related costs adds nothing to the explanation of the historical decrease of higher-order births. This paper examines the effect of inbreeding as a direct measure of consanguinity on early childhood mortality. Data are from a church directory of the Old Order Amiah of the Lancester, PA, settlement. The sample includes all infant deaths and a probability sample of survivors (total N = 1,823).We find that inbreeding has a net position effect on neonatal and infant deaths and on the instantaneous hazard rate. However,we also find socio-economic and other explanations,even in this population,likely to experience certain genetically transmitted defects associated with infant mortality.
