The article focuses on the book "Social Mobility in the Caste System in India. An Interdisciplinary Symposium," edited by James Silverberg. This paper provides an extended review of Randolph T. Hester's Design for ecological democracy (2006). Initially, a brief introduction to the book, its author and the works position in the literature is given, before a broad summary of the book's central argument is provided. The paper then considers the three key themes Hester explores: enabling form, resilient form and impelling form. Through this discussion, linkages are made to wider concepts of ecology in planning practice as well as political and planning theory. The paper concludes that Design for ecological democracy provides not only an engaging philosophy for the future, but also a series of case study-supported interlinked practical methods for change for the way the built environment is shaped. In this paper I review three books on the notion of partnership working. In Problem-oriented policing and partnerships and Crime reduction partnerships the authors explore partnership working in an informative way for practitioners, whereas in the edited collection. Fighting crime together, the authors combine empirical, theoretical and methodological understandings of the notion of security networks. The books provide a useful starting point for exploring wider issues. I examine the involvement of the police, as a dominant partnership participant; the existence of co-operation and contest in police partnerships, as a manifestation of contradictions in the wider socio-political climate; the role of the state, empirically and normatively, in policing through partnerships. My argument is that the state does and should have a vital role in police partnerships, although not without it being regulated through an independent and socially representative body, such as a community safety or policing commission. In 1992 William B. Hunter challenged Milton's authorship of the heterodox treatise De Doctrina Christiana. The mainstream of the debate following it was faithfully recorded on the pages of the Studies in English Literature but there were a number of articles published in both Milton Studies and Milton Quarterly that added to the discussion of the treatise's provenance. In this paper I aim to develop the issue of predestination in the above-mentioned debate based on Paul R. Sellin's article "Milton's Paradise Lost and De Doctrina Christiana on predestination." In his article, Sellin tries to maintain Hunter's assumption that Milton could not have been the author of the treatise, by demonstrating a discrepancy between De Doctrina Christiana and Paradise Lost in the matter of predestination. I, on the contrary, hoped to show by detailed analysis the uncanny resemblance between the two works regarding predestination, especially when observed from a broader perspective of the doctrine of grace. The article focuses on the book "Sport Promotion and Sales Management," by Richard L. Irwin, William A. Sutton, and Larry M. McCarthy. In the book, authors present aspiring as well as practicing sport managers and marketers with a "how-to" guide for administering sport promotions, advancing the sales of tickets, and fostering corporate sponsorships. In many ways a response to the ongoing debate between those of a practical bent and those who envisage sport studies to be a critical, theoretically intensive course of study, Irwin, Sutton, and McCarthy's practitioner-oriented text is obviously directed at those inclined to agree with the former. Through fourteen pragmatically themed chapters, authors apply a wealth of personal experience and practical knowledge to the practice of effective sales and promotions. At the book's core is a concern with examining the unsolved mysteries pertaining to the ideological construction of consumer imagination. At both the business and sociological ends of the sport studies continuum, academics are constantly exploring the relationship between producer and consumer.

The article focuses on the books "Goals of Economic Life," edited by A. Dudley Ward, and "Organizational Revolution: A Study in the Ethics of Economic Organization," by Kenneth E. Boulding. These are the first two volumes to be published in a series of six books on the ethics and economics of society, prepared under the auspices of the Rockefeller Foundation and a study committee of the Department of the Church and Economic Life of the National Council of Churches of Christ. Goals of Economic Life is a symposium in which 15 distinguished social scientists and theologians address themselves, in as many essays, to the problem of the current American value system and its dynamics. Besides some of the most famous American economists, there are papers by philosophers, a zoologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist and a sociologist. The study of the "Goals of Economic Life" reviews and synthesizes much of the recent research literature on the sociology of economic relations. It is an important addition to sociological theory and institutional interpretation.

The article focuses on the book "A Short History of Economic Progress: A Course in Economic History," by Y.S. Brenner. Brenner is a professional economist and his book derives from his 1966 to 67 lecture course at Cape Coast University in Ghana, where he was Head of the Economics Department. Brenner is one of the sensitive subspecies of development economists with the courage needed to start such a course at the era of the Reformation, and moreover to devote much time to the earlier phases of development. Brenner's grand and grandly optimistic hypothesis is that economic progress, starting as a mutant in Reformation Europe, is like an organism and by its very nature tends to spread, to occupy its environment, to cover the earth. Closer to the present, as a development economist, Brenner is properly most interested in blockages, which have impeded the spreading of material progress. Unlike some less sensitive economists Brenner is ready to take account of social, political and cultural elements, which have propelled or impeded development.

The article discusses two books related to the religion and psychology. Books discussed are "An Introduction to the Psychology of Religion," by Frank S. Hickman and "Religion and Morbid Mental States," by H.I. Schou. Both of these volumes are by men who value greatly the Christian experience, but the content is not limited to pietism. In fact, Hickman's volume does not manifest any considerable interest in theology. He identifies religion very largely with ethics and separates it definitely from magic. His primary motive in writing the book appears to be to assist the pastor, Sunday School teacher, parent, and even college instructor in giving adequate religious training in the most effective manner. In order that such instruction may be given it is necessary that the teacher shall have some understanding of the psychological principles underlying religious experience. This has led the author to assimilate as much of modem psychology and social psychology as is necessary for his purpose. There are also evidences of sociology and anthropology in the book. That the interest in preparing the book has not been the purely objective one of scientific exposition is, the author thinks, clear from the reading, but it has many merits even from this more or less propagandistic viewpoint.

The article presents the author's response to the review of his book done by Norman Fairclough. The author is grateful to both Fairclough for his critical review of the author's book and Ingrid Piller for the invitation to respond. Fairclough is right that there are tensions in the author's book. First, between the solidity of figures and the attempt to be more flexible. This is a result of trying to make a dense text more accessible to readers. The second tension comes from an attempt to summarize a field of work while also critiquing and showing preferences. The author does not in fact think there are really just three positions available in Applied Linguistics. The author feels that the proposition would be preposterous. Therefore, the author thinks there are three targets here, not just two, but he subjected them to different levels of critique.
