This article presents information on the book "Generations in Touch: Linking the Old and Young in a Tokyo Neighborhood," by Leng Leng Thang. This volume presents an ethnography of Kotoen, a facility in Tokyo, Japan, that attempts to reengage generations by integrating an old-age home, a day center for elders, and a day-care center for children. Kotoen's adult residents are considered to be "grandparents" to its children. Thang volunteered and conducted interviews among the facility's different groups between 1995 and 1996. She finds that although Kotoen's programming does not pro- mote close relationships between individual children and elders, the interaction with children seems to combat loneliness and boredom among the elders while providing positive views of old age and institutional old-age facilities among the children and the public.

Prudentius' Hymn to Romanus , a work also known as Peristephanon 10, is replete with allusions to Juvenal. Although previous scholarship has focused on identifying these allusions, less attention has been paid to his Christian background, against which his poems can be more fully appreciated. In this study, without attempting to downplay Juvenal's influence on Prudentius, I will revisit some of his allusions to the Roman satirist in their broader context, taking cognizance of the Christian apologetic material on which Prudentius drew heavily in order to write his Hymn to Romanus. In so doing, I wish to show how and why Prudentius combines Juvenal with Christian apologetics, and what that can tell us both for Prudentius' modes of allusion, and for the reception of Juvenal and satire into a Christian context. This article presents information on the book "Sweatshop Warriors: Immigrant Women Workers Take On the Global Factory," by Miriam Ching Yoon Louie. Between 1997 and 2000, Miriam Ching Yoon Louie interviewed Chinese, Korean, and Mexican immigrant women who are active in five community workers' centers in New York, California, and Texas. In this volume, she analyzes the colonial and global economic conditions in their home countries that led these women to emigrate and that prepared them for work in U.S. sweatshops. She describes how restaurant, garment, and manufacturing workers challenge sexual harassment, violations of wage and hour laws, and mass layoffs, most successfully in campaigns against Levi Strauss, Donna Karan, and Los Angeles's Koreatown restaurants.

This essay revisits Leander's abduction in the Hellespont with a focus on the geopolitical significations in Marlowe's Hero and Leander. The imagery of the abducted boy, often recast as the iconic Ganymede, as object of desire is prevalent in early modern literature. Tracing representations of the abducted boy within the historical context of abductions in the Ottoman Mediterranean, the essay argues that the abducted boy is not just a classical prototype from a Greco-Roman lineage, but is also a reflection of the boys actually abducted in the early modern period, especially the boys who were objects of cross-cultural circulations generated by imperial hierarchies in the greater Mediterranean space. In his addition of a homoerotic abduction plot to the classical story from Musaeus and Ovid, Marlowe deploys the figure of Ganymede as well as a rhetoric of Mediterranean trade to imprint on Leander's body an erotic-cultural history of abducted boys. Pursuing Leander in the Mediterranean waters and thus traveling between English and Ottoman contexts, this essay offers a relational reading strategy in exploring sexual, racial, and imperial components of literary and historical abductions in a global context. This article reads Hope Mirrlees's Paris: A Poem as an epic—that is, as "a poem including history" to use Pound's formulation—that reconfigures the act of including history as a particularly erotic one. Through certain rhetorical figures such as metaphor and pun, Mirrlees stages the most urgent questions of her historical moment in terms of paradox: the drawing together of that which maintains an unresolvable difference. The imagination's attempt to reach across an unbridgeable gap figures the restless reach of desire in the poem. This poetico-historical project has specific socio-political implications. Paradox's force emerges from its ability to keep the mind in motion; Mirrlees wields this power to create an erotic historiography that resists consigning the events of the "just now" to the "stillness" of the past. In this way, Mirrlees's poem offers neither a neat story of Paris's history, nor an easily-consumed portrait of life in Paris in the spring of 1919. Rather, predicated on the rhetorical as opposed to the merely referential, Paris reveals that historical occurrences—including historical tropes of women—are always necessarily constructed figuratively, marking at once the limits of recording history and the poem's means of (and grounds for) historical critique. Inspired by Lactantius, Spenser stages a trial in which the absolutist tendencies of Elizabeth and her probable successor are judged by the law of nature, embodied in the God-like Dame Nature. Holding the conflation of politics and theology up to skeptical scrutiny, Spenser uses Euhemerism to critique civil idolatry, in a way which counters the Eusebian currents in Elizabethan literature and influences Milton's Paradise Lost. This article presents information on the book "Tangled Relationships: Managing Boundary Issues in the Human Services," by Frederic G. Reamer. Boundary issues arise in the human services when practitioners establish more than one relationship with a client. Not all of these relationships are clearly unethical, but, as Reamer argues, they all need to be managed carefully. Separate chapters address managing different types of dual relationships: intimate relationships, such as counseling current or former sexual partners or their relatives or acquaintances; emotional and dependency relationships, such as friendships and self-disclosure with clients; personal benefit relationships, including barter for services, gifts, and conflicts of interest; altruism; and unavoidable circumstances, such as geographic proximity and social encounters.

This article presents information on the book "Still the Big News: Racial Oppression in America," by Bob Blauner. This collection contains several of Blauner's most famous essays about the racial climate of the United States in the 1960's and 1970's as well as more recent essays that rethink his earlier positions. This article presents information on the book "Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation," by Alejandro Portes and Rubén G. Rumbaut. One-fifth of all U.S. residents are first- or second-generation immigrants. Portes and Rumbaut ask what makes the children of immigrants successful Americans. They base their answers on 1990 and 2000 census results and on a San Diego and southern Florida longitudinal study of high-school-age children and some of their parents from 77 countries. Portes and Rumbaut find that most members of the second generation speak English better than the first generation, most expect to go to college, two-thirds live in intact families, and a majority feel discriminated against by their native white peers, teachers, and neighbors. Despite these similarities, immigrants from different countries face different prospects.

This article presents information on the book "Age Through Ethnic Lenses: Caring for the Elderly in a Multicultural Society," edited by Laura Katz Olson. The 21 chapters in this volume address issues of aging and social service delivery among different ethnic, socioreligious, and gender groups in the United States. Although many groups have strong traditions of elder care by kin, traditions change on contact with the larger American culture. For example, many women work outside the home and cannot provide traditional care, and many elderly people are reluctant to leave their ethnic neighborhoods for the suburban homes of their children.

Long regarded as the contemporary Chinese feminist poet par excellence—giving not only voice to Chinese women but feminine sonic mysteriousness to the poetic landscape—Zhai Yongming has, in her latest work, apotheosized Chinese women's poetry into the only thing through which relations between Chinese linguistics, historiography, media, and constructions of national and global essence become fully apprehensible. This essay is divided into two parts. Part one investigates Zhai's vision of the relationship between twenty-first-century Chinese feminist poetics and the knowability of modern China—not its knowability from a feminist standpoint but its knowability at all. I examine her use of the tropes of feminist recognition to deconstruct a postsinological world—one in which the politics of representing and studying "China" everywhere circulate and proliferate, one in which what Zhai terms the "DNA of the Chinese language" morphs alongside gender and global technologies, and one in which ancient and contemporary Chinese histories are broadcasted through transnationally constituted mediascapes. The second part of this essay, focusing on two Sapphic figures whom Zhai hails from the Tang dynasty, unpacks Zhai's ambitious nomination of female poetic virtuosity as the terminus a quo of the next phase of China's poetic revival. I examine how Zhai trades in co-optable historical female personages so as to confront the reader with poetic virtuosity, a confrontation that collapses reading (for) female scandal and reading (for) linguistic revival. For Zhai, I will argue, the political potential of decipherment locked into feminist poetics is ultimately a question of art: not only "how is transnationally constituted China knowable?" but "how can knowing it be pleasurable in ways for which we are already primed?" Focusing on the feedback between Zhai's theories of language and culture and her radicalization of feminism's epistemological values, this essay shows the subtle link between twenty-first-century global "sinological" work from the Chinese literary world and the ongoing project of feminist recovery and revivification. Comparing human beings to timepieces in a conceit that plays upon the traditional iconography of Temperance, Donne challenges technological progressivism, promoting in its place a skeptical chronometry of virtue. Donne's conceit poses interpretive challenges that force readers to think analytically and critically about how technology-and in particular the technology of time-measurement-is related to human goodness and well-being.
