The article presents information about the book "Loren Eiseley--Darwin's Century, the Scientific Book Guild." The book is a beautiful history of the science of organic evolution. It is thus a departure from the other books published on the occasion of the century of scientist Charles Darwin's "The Origin of Species." Professor Eiseley has chosen to follow the intellectual currents, which produced the major evolutionary synthesis, and, by patient and detailed analysis, to perceive from whence and under what conditions that complex of ideas known as Darwinism has emerged. When it comes to natural selection, Eiseley points out that a paper entitled "An account of a White Female, Part of Whose Skin Resembles That of a Negro" was delivered before the Royal Society at London, England in 1913 by an expatriate American physician William Wells, which contains an almost complete anticipation of Darwin's major thesis, natural selection. Wells clearly discussed the relation between artificial and natural selection in the case of the piebald woman. But the greatest achievement of Darwin was in the destruction of the design argument of the theologians. In a letter Darwin wrote that species formation has hitherto, been viewed as beyond law, in fact, this branch of science is still with more people under its theological phase of development.

This book is a collection of papers presented at the conference on research in family planning, which was held at Carnegie International Centre in New York City from October 13-19, 1960. There are studies about India, Asiatic countries other than India and the Middle East, United States, Latin America and Europe. It includes research in methods of fertility control, about acceptability of methods, problems of measurement, problems of research design and problems of motivation and communication. On the whole the book is very comprehensive and useful. It is a step in the right direction and must be read by all those who are at present engaged in the implementation of family planning programmes with one caution that methods to be employed depend upon the culture and ethics of each country and in this field methods and programmes of other countries cannot be adopted without proper thinking and adjustment.

Chilean mining municipalities are centers from which political radicalism is diffused into surrounding non-mining agricultural and non-agricultural areas. The greater the number of mining municipalities a "satellite" municipality adjoins, the more likely it is to have a "high" vote for the presidential candidate of the Socialist-Communist coalition (FRAP). Municipalities that are neither mining municipalities nor adjoining any, are least likely to have a "high" FRAP vote. In agricultural areas, political differences based on class position among the peasants tend to disappear in the mining and "satellite" municipalities. In the non-mining, non-satellite municipalities, however, class structure does determine voting. Mining and adjoining municipalities develop a radical political culture that tends to eliminate the political importance of class differences among the peasant; uniting them across class lines. While numerous studies have been made of the opinions of the public toward civil liberties in general and academic freedom in particular, relatively little is known concerning the views of a segment of the population more directly involved professional scholars. In view of this situation, the Executive Committee of the Eastern Sociological Society authorized its Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in Research and Teaching to conduct a poll of fact and opinion among professional sociologists residing in the East on the climate of national opinion and the state of academic freedom. This is a summary of the findings. Due to the lack of available checks on the representativeness of both the original sample and the returns, the results cannot be generalized to all professional sociologists living in the East. Nevertheless, on the basis of personal and institutional data, the respondents constitute an experienced, professionally established, and active group of scholars. The median number of the rank of associate professor or above and had published at least one book or monograph and two or more articles.

An interesting illustration of R.E. Park's thesis that continued contact between two groups leads to eventual assimilation, is to be found in the development of jazz, which reflects the increasing contact between Negroes and whites in the U.S. With this contact one characteristic after another of Negro music has been gradually adopted by popular white music. First, a stereotype of Negro music which had little relation to the real thing was developed in the coon song of the minstrel show, then the simpler aspects of Negro musical rhythm were taken over in ragtime, followed by the diffusion of Negro harmonies to produce the blues. Finally, as a result of more intimate contact, most of the features of Negro music were taken over through the medium of hot jazz, which in turn has now been modified by white music. In the nineteenth century white musicians took over a few characteristics of Negro music which they adapted to the tastes of the whites, but in the post-World War I period, not only had whites developed an understanding of Negro popular music which they adopted, but conversely, the Negro idiom has been affected by West European music through the influence of white jazz musicians.
