The sharp rise of social media websites and Internet access via mobile devices has greatly transformed the lives of children, both at home and in school. Research has found that children as young as two often have some kind of online interaction on a home computer, smartphone, or tablet. In the first decades of the twenty-first century it became typical for a middle school student to own a cell phone, with which they frequently communicated to their peers during the day. These online interactions raised several concerns over the social and emotional development of children, the rise of cyberbullying, and desensitization to inappropriate content.
