Margaret Sanger was an ardent crusader for birth control and family planning. For decades, she traveled throughout the United States, campaigning for the legalization of contraception. Although she lectured on the use of the condom, diaphragm, and rhythm methods of birth control, she knew that these methods were cumbersome and often ineffective. Deciding that a foolproof contraceptive was necessary, Sanger met with her friend, the wealthy socialite Katharine Dexter McCormick.
