1. Data-driven Modeling of a Coronal Magnetic Flux Rope: from Birth to Death

Abstract: Magnetic flux ropes are a bundle of twisted magnetic field lines produced by internal electric currents, which are responsible for solar eruptions and are the major drivers of geomagnetic storms. As such, it is crucial to develop a numerical model that can capture the entire evolution of a flux rope, from its birth to death, in order to predict whether adverse space weather events might occur or not. In this paper, we develop a data-driven modeling that combines a time-dependent magneto-frictional approach with a thermodynamic magnetohydrodynamic model. Our numerical modeling successfully reproduces the formation and confined eruption of an observed flux rope, and unveils the physical details behind the observations. Regarding the long-term evolution of the active region, our simulation results indicate that the flux cancellation due to collisional shearing plays a critical role in the formation of the flux rope, corresponding to a substantial increase in magnetic free energy and helicity. Regarding the eruption stage, the deformation of the flux rope during its eruption can cause an increase in the downward tension force, which suppresses it from further rising. This finding may shed light on why some torus-unstable flux ropes lead to failed eruptions after large-angle rotations. 3. Grow-up of a Filament Channel by Intermittent Small-scale Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract: Filament channel (FC), a plasma volume where the magnetic field is primarily aligned with the polarity inversion line, is believed to be the pre-eruptive configuration of coronal mass ejections. Nevertheless, evidence for how the FC is formed is still elusive. In this paper, we present a detailed study on the build-up of a FC to understand its formation mechanism. The New Vacuum Solar Telescope of Yunnan Observatories and Optical and Near-Infrared Solar Eruption Tracer of Nanjing University, as well as the AIA and HMI on board Solar Dynamics Observatory are used to study the grow-up process of the FC. Furthermore, we reconstruct the non-linear force-free field (NLFFF) of the active region using the regularized Biot-Savart laws (RBSL) and magnetofrictional method to reveal three-dimension (3D) magnetic field properties of the FC. We find that partial filament materials are quickly transferred to longer magnetic field lines formed by small-scale magnetic reconnection, as evidenced by dot-like H{\alpha}/EUV brightenings and subsequent bidirectional outflow jets, as well as untwisting motions. The H{\alpha}/EUV bursts appear repeatedly at the same location and are closely associated with flux cancellation, which occurs between two small-scale opposite polarities and is driven by shearing and converging motions. The 3D NLFFF model reveals that the reconnection takes place in a hyperbolic flux tube that is located above the flux cancellation site and below the FC. The FC is gradually built up toward a twisted flux rope via series of small-scale reconnection events that occur intermittently prior to the eruption., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. 4. Electrochemical control of ferroelectricity in hafnia-based ferroelectric devices using reversible oxygen migration

Abstract: Ferroelectricity, especially in hafnia-based thin films at nanosizes, has been rejuvenated in the fields of low-power, nonvolatile and Si-compatible modern memory and logic applications. Despite tremendous efforts to explore the formation of the metastable ferroelectric phase and the polarization degradation during field cycling, the ability of oxygen vacancy to exactly engineer and switch polarization remains to be elucidated. Here we report reversibly electrochemical control of ferroelectricity in Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$ (HZO) heterostructures with a mixed ionic-electronic LaSrMnO$_3$ electrode, achieving a hard breakdown field more than 18 MV/cm, over fourfold as high as that of typical HZO. The electrical extraction and insertion of oxygen into HZO is macroscopically characterized and atomically imaged in situ. Utilizing this reversible process, we achieved multiple polarization states and even repeatedly repaired the damaged ferroelectricity by reversed negative electric fields. Our study demonstrates the robust and switchable ferroelectricity in hafnia oxide distinctly associated with oxygen vacancy and opens up opportunities to recover, manipulate, and utilize rich ferroelectric functionalities for advanced ferroelectric functionality to empower the existing Si-based electronics such as multi-bit storage.

5. Control of the metal-insulator transition in NdNiO$_3$ thin films through the interplay between structural and electronic properties

Abstract: Heteroepitaxy offers a new type of control mechanism for the crystal structure, the electronic correlations, and thus the functional properties of transition-metal oxides. Here, we combine electrical transport measurements, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the evolution of the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) in NdNiO$_3$ films as a function of film thickness and NdGaO$_3$ substrate crystallographic orientation. We find that for two different substrate facets, orthorhombic (101) and (011), modifications of the NiO$_6$ octahedral network are key for tuning the transition temperature $T_{\text{MIT}}$ over a wide temperature range. A comparison of films of identical thickness reveals that growth on [101]-oriented substrates generally results in a higher $T_{\text{MIT}}$, which can be attributed to an enhanced bond-disproportionation as revealed by the DFT+$U$ calculations, and a tendency of [011]-oriented films to formation of structural defects and stabilization of non-equilibrium phases. Our results provide insights into the structure-property relationship of a correlated electron system and its evolution at microscopic length scales and give new perspectives for the epitaxial control of macroscopic phases in metal-oxide heterostructures., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

6. Multi-wavelength observations of the BL Lac object Fermi J1544-0649: one year after its awakening

Abstract: We report observations of a transient source \fermi\ from radio to \grs. \fermi\ was discovered by the {\it Fermi-LAT} in May 2017. Follow-up {\it Swift-XRT} observations revealed three flaring episodes through March 2018, and the peak X-ray flux is about $10^3$ higher than the {\it ROSAT all-sky survey (RASS)} flux upper limit. Optical spectral measurements taken by the {\it Magellan 6.5-m telescope} and the {\it Lick-Shane telescope} both show a largely featureless spectrum, strengthening the BL Lac interpretation first proposed by \citet{Bruni18}. The optical and mid-infrared (MIR) emission goes to a higher state in 2018, when the flux in high energies goes down to a lower level. Our {\it RATAN-600m} measurements at 4.8~GHz and 8.2~GHz do not indicate any significant radio flux variation over the monitoring seasons in 2017 and 2018, nor deviate from the archival {\it NVSS} flux level. During GeV flaring times, the spectrum is very hard ($\Gamma_\gamma\sim$1.7) in the GeV band and at times also very hard (($\Gamma_{\rm X}\lesssim2$) in the X-rays, similar to a high-synchrotron-peak (or even an extreme) BL Lac object, making \fermi\ a good target for ground-based {\it Cherenkov telescopes}., Comment: Submitted in Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

Abstract: We report measurements of electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) performed at millikelvin temperatures in a custom-built high-sensitivity spectrometer based on superconducting micro-resonators. The high quality factor and small mode volume (down to 0.2pL) of the resonator allow to probe a small number of spins, down to $5\cdot 10^2$. We measure 2-pulse ESEEM on two systems: erbium ions coupled to $^{183}$W nuclei in a natural-abundance $\text{CaWO}_4$ crystal, and bismuth donors coupled to residual $^{29}$Si nuclei in a silicon substrate that was isotopically enriched in the $^{28}$Si isotope. We also measure 3- and 5-pulse ESEEM for the bismuth donors in silicon. 8. Transition from circular-ribbon to parallel-ribbon flares associated with a bifurcated magnetic flux rope

Abstract: Magnetic flux ropes play a key role in triggering solar flares in the solar atmosphere. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of active region NOAA 12268 within 36 hours from 2015 January 29 to 30, during which a flux rope was formed and three M-class and three C-class flares were triggered without coronal mass ejections. During the evolution of the active region, the flare emission seen in the H$\alpha$ and ultraviolet wavebands changed from a circular shape (plus an adjacent conjugated ribbon and a remote ribbon) to three relatively straight and parallel ribbons. Based on a series of reconstructed nonlinear force-free fields, we find sheared or twisted magnetic field lines and a large-scale quasi-separatrix layer (QSL) associated with 3D null points in a quadrupolar magnetic field. These features always existed and constantly evolved during the two days. The twist of the flux rope was gradually accumulated that eventually led to its instability. Around the flux rope, there were some topological structures, including a bald patch, a hyperbolic flux tube and a torus QSL. We discuss how the particular magnetic structure and its evolution produce the flare emission. In particular, the bifurcation of the flux rope can explain the transition of the flares from circular to parallel ribbons. We propose a two-stage evolution of the magnetic structure and its associated flares. In the first stage, sheared arcades under the dome-like large-scale QSL were gradually transformed into a flux rope through magnetic reconnection, which produced the circular ribbon flare. Abstract: With reduced dimensionality, it is often easier to modify the properties of ultra-thin films than their bulk counterparts. Strain engineering, usually achieved by choosing appropriate substrates, has been proven effective in controlling the properties of perovskite oxide films. An emerging alternative route for developing new multifunctional perovskite is by modification of the oxygen octahedral structure. Here we report the control of structural oxygen octahedral rotation in ultra-thin perovskite SrRuO3 films by the deposition of a SrTiO3 capping layer, which can be lithographically patterned to achieve local control. Using a scanning Sagnac magnetic microscope, we show increase in the Curie temperature of SrRuO3 due to the suppression octahedral rotations revealed by the synchrotron x-ray diffraction. 11. Atomically precise lateral modulation of a two-dimensional electron liquid in anatase TiO2 thin films

Abstract: Engineering the electronic band structure of two-dimensional electron liquids (2DELs) confined at the surface or interface of transition metal oxides is key to unlocking their full potential. Here we describe a new approach to tailoring the electronic structure of an oxide surface 2DEL demonstrating the lateral modulation of electronic states with atomic scale precision on an unprecedented length scale comparable to the Fermi wavelength. To this end, we use pulsed laser deposition to grow anatase TiO2 films terminated by a (1 x 4) in-plane surface reconstruction. Employing photo-stimulated chemical surface doping we induce 2DELs with tunable carrier densities that are confined within a few TiO2 layers below the surface. Subsequent in-situ angle resolved photoemission experiments demonstrate that the (1 x 4) surface reconstruction provides a periodic lateral perturbation of the electron liquid. This causes strong backfolding of the electronic bands, opening of unidirectional gaps and a saddle point singularity in the density of states near the chemical potential.

Abstract: Multi-step laser resonance ionization spectroscopy of lutetium (Lu) has been performed at TRIUMF's off-line laser ion source test stand. The even-parity Rydberg series $6s^2nd$ $^2D_{3/2}$, $6s^2nd$ $^2D_{5/2}$ and $6s^2ns$ $^2S_{1/2}$ were observed converging to the 6s$^2$ ionization potential. The experimental results has been compared to previous work. 51 levels of Rydberg series $6s^2nd$ $^2D_{5/2}$ and 52 levels of Rydberg series $6s^2ns$ $^2S_{1/2}$ were reported new. Additionally six even-parity autoionization (AI) series converging to Lu ionic states $5d6s$ $^3D_1$ and $5d6s$ $^3D_2$ were observed. The level energies of these AI states were measured. Abstract: Inverse Compton scattering (ICS) is a unique mechanism for producing fast pulses - picosecond and below - of bright X- to gamma-rays. These nominally narrow spectral bandwidth electromagnetic radiation pulses are efficiently produced in the interaction between intense, well-focused electron and laser beams. The spectral characteristics of such sources are affected by many experimental parameters, such as the bandwidth of the laser, and the angles of both the electrons and laser photons at collision. The laser field amplitude induces harmonic generation and importantly, for the present work, nonlinear red shifting, both of which dilute the spectral brightness of the radiation. As the applications enabled by this source often depend sensitively on its spectra, it is critical to resolve the details of the wavelength and angular distribution obtained from ICS collisions. With this motivation, we present here an experimental study that greatly improves on previous spectral measurement methods based on X-ray K-edge filters, by implementing a multi-layer bent-crystal X-ray spectrometer. In tandem with a collimating slit, this method reveals a projection of the double-differential angular-wavelength spectrum of the ICS radiation in a single shot. The measurements enabled by this diagnostic illustrate the combined off-axis and nonlinear-field-induced red shifting in the ICS emission process. Abstract: In all archetypical reported (001)-oriented perovskite heterostructures, it has been deduced that the preferential occupation of two-dimensional electron gases is in-plane $d_\textrm{xy}$ state. In sharp contrast to this, the investigated electronic structure of a spinel-perovskite heterostructure $\gamma$-Al$_2$O$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ by resonant soft X-ray linear dichroism, demonstrates that the preferential occupation is out-of-plane $d_\textrm{xz}$/$d_\textrm{yz}$ states for interfacial electrons. Moreover, the impact of strain further corroborates that this anomalous orbital structure can be linked to the altered crystal field at the interface and symmetry breaking of the interfacial structural units. 16. Designing substrates for silicene and germanene: First-principles calculations

Abstract: We propose a guideline for exploring substrates that stabilize the monolayer honeycomb structure of silicene and germanene while simultaneously preserve the Dirac states: in addition to have a strong binding energy to the monolayer, a suitable substrate should be a large-gap semiconductor with a proper workfunction such that the Dirac point lies in the gap and far from the substrate states when their bands align. We illustrate our idea by performing first-principles calculations for silicene and germanene on the Al-terminated (0001) surface of Al2O3 . The overlaid monolayers on Al-terminated Al2O3(0001) retain the main structural profile of the low-buckled honeycomb structure via a binding energy comparable to the one between silicene and Ag(111). Unfolded band structure derived from the k-projection method reveals that gapped Dirac cone is formed at the K point due to the structural distortion and the interaction with the substrate. The gaps of 0.4 eV and 0.3 eV respectively for the supported silicene and germanene suggest that they may have potential applications in nanoelectronics.

17. Implementation of Resistive Type Superconducting Fault Current Limiters in Electrical Grids: Performance Analysis and Measuring of Optimal Locations

Abstract: In the past few years there has been a significant rise in the short-circuit current levels in transmission and distribution networks, it due to the increasing demands on power and the addition of sources of distributed generations. It leads to the need of integration of novel protection systems such as the superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs), ... . SFCL models on the electric distribution networks largely rely on the insertion of a step or exponential resistance that is determined by a predefined quenching time. However, beyond the framework of these models, the study of the performance, reliability, and location strategy for the installation of sole or multiple SFCLs in power grids still lacks of proper development leading to the utter need of comprehensive and systematic studies on this issue. In this paper, we expand the scope of the aforementioned models by considering the actual behaviour of a SFCL in terms of the temperature dynamic power-law dependence between the electrical field and the current density. Our results are compared with step-resistance models for the sake of discussion and clarity of the conclusions. Both SFCL models were integrated into a power system model built based on the UK power standard, and the impact of these protection strategies on the performance of the overall electricity network was studied. As a representative renewable energy source, a 90 MVA wind farm was considered for the simulations. Abstract: We present an experimental and theoretical study exploring surface effects on the evolution of the metal-insulator transition in the model Mott-Hubbard compound Cr-doped V$_2$O$_3$. We find a microscopic domain formation that is clearly affected by the surface crystallographic orientation. Using scanning photoelectron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, we find that surface defects act as nucleation centers for the formation of domains at the temperature-induced isostructural transition and favor the formation of microscopic metallic regions. A density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory study of different surface terminations shows that the surface reconstruction with excess vanadyl cations leads to doped, and hence more metallic surface states, explaining our experimental observations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We identify the driving mechanism of the gigantic Seebeck coefficient in FeSb$_2$ as the phonon-drag effect associated with an in-gap density of states that we demonstrate to derive from excess iron. We accurately model electronic and thermoelectric transport coefficients and explain the so far ill-understood correlation of maxima and inflection points in different response functions. Our scenario has far-reaching consequences for attempts to harvest the spectacular powerfactor of FeSb$_2$.

Abstract: We report the formation of a non-magnetic band insulator at the isopolar interface between the antiferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard insulator LaTiO3 and the antiferromagnetic charge transfer insulator LaFeO3. By density functional theory calculations, we find that the formation of this interface state is driven by the combination of O band alignment and crystal field splitting energy of the t2g and eg bands. As a result of these two driving forces, the Fe 3d bands rearrange and electrons are transferred from Ti to Fe. This picture is supported by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which confirms the rearrangement of the Fe 3d bands and reveals an unprecedented charge transfer up to 1.2+/-0.2 e-/interface unit cell in our LaTiO3/LaFeO3 heterostructures., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract: Accurate measurement of the fat-to-muscle ratio in animal model is important for obesity research. An efficient way to measure the fat to muscle ratio in animal model using dual-energy absorptiometry is presented in this paper. A radioactive source exciting x-ray fluorescence from a target material is used to provide the two x-ray energies needed. The x-rays, after transmitting through the sample, are measured with an energy-sensitive Ge detector. Phantoms and specimens were measured. The results showed that the method was sensitive to the fat to muscle ratios with good linearity. Abstract: Using a sample of $1.06 \times 10^{8}$ $\psi(2S)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay $\psi(2S) \to p \bar{p}\eta$ is studied. A partial wave analysis determines that the intermediate state N(1535) with a mass of $1524\pm5^{+10}_{-4}$ MeV/$c^2$ and a width of $130^{+27+57}_{-24-10}$ MeV/$c^2$ is dominant in the decay; the product branching fraction is determined to be $B(\psi(2S) \to N(1535)\bar{p})\times B(N(1535)\to p\eta)+c.c. = (5.2\pm0.3^{+3.2}_{-1.2})\times 10^{-5}$. Furthermore, the branching fraction of $\psi(2S) \to \eta p \bar{p}$ is measured to be $(6.4\pm0.2\pm0.6)\times 10^{-5}$.

Abstract: We search for the M1 radiative transition \psi(3686) \to \gamma\eta_{c}(2S) by reconstructing the exclusive \eta_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} decay using 1.06 \times 10^8 \psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. The signal is observed with a statistical significance of greater than 4 standard deviations. The measured mass of the \eta_{c}(2S) is 3646.9 \pm 1.6(stat) \pm 3.6(syst) MeV/c^2, and the width is 9.9 \pm 4.8(stat) \pm 2.9(syst) MeV/c^2. The product branching fraction is measured to be B(\psi(3686) \to \gamma\eta_{c}(2S)) \times B(\eta_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}) = (7.03 \pm 2.10(stat) \pm 0.70(syst)) \times 10^{-6}. This measurement complements a previous BESIII measurement of \psi(3686) \to \gamma\eta_{c}(2S) with \eta_{c}(2S) \to K_{S}^{0} K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp} and K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}.

Abstract: Based on a sample of $2.25\times 10^{8}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a full partial wave analysis on $J/\psi\to\gamma\eta\eta$ was performed using the relativistic covariant tensor amplitude method. The results show that the dominant $0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ components are from the $f_0(1710)$, $f_0(2100)$, $f_0(1500)$, $f_2'(1525)$, $f_2(1810)$ and $f_2(2340)$. The resonance parameters and branching fractions are also presented.

Abstract: A 2.25$\times10^8$ $\jpsi$ event sample accumulated with the BESIII detector is used to study the doubly OZI suppressed decay modes $\jpsi\to\gamma\of$, $\omega\to\ppp$, $\phi\to\kk$. A strong deviation ($>$ 30$\sigma$) from three-body $\jpsi\to\gamma\omega\phi$ phase space is observed near the $\omega\phi$ mass threshold that is consistent with a previous observation reported by the BESII experiment. A partial wave analysis with a tensor covariant amplitude that assumes that the enhancement is due to the presence of a resonance, the X(1810), is performed, and confirms that the spin-parity of the X(1810) is $0^{++}$. The mass and width of the X(1810) are determined to be $M=1795\pm7$(stat)$^{+13}_{-5}$(syst)$\pm$19(mod) MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma=95\pm10$(stat)$^{+21}_{-34}$(syst)$\pm$75(mod) MeV/$c^2$, respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(\jpsi\to\gamma X(1810))\times{\cal B}(X(1810)\to\of)=(2.00\pm0.08$(stat)$^{+0.45}_{-1.00}$(syst)$\pm$1.30(mod))$\times10^{-4}$. %where the first error is the statistical error and the second the systematical error. These results are consistent within errors with those of the BESII experiment.

Abstract: Using 106 $\times 10^{6}$ $\psi^{\prime}$ decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII, three decays of $\chi_{cJ}$ ($J=0,1,2$) with baryon pairs ($\llb$, $\ssb$, $\SSB$) in the final state have been studied. The branching fractions are measured to be $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c0,1,2}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar\Lambda) =(33.3 \pm 2.0 \pm 2.6)\times 10^{-5}$, $(12.2 \pm 1.1 \pm 1.1)\times 10^{-5}$, $(20.8 \pm 1.6 \pm 2.3)\times 10^{-5}$; $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c0,1,2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0})$ = $(47.8 \pm 3.4 \pm 3.9)\times 10^{-5}$, $(3.8 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-5}$, $(4.0 \pm 1.1 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-5}$; and $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c0,1,2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-})$ = $(45.4 \pm 4.2 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-5}$, $(5.4 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-5}$, $(4.9 \pm 1.9 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-5}$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Upper limits on the branching fractions for the decays of $\chi_{c1,2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0}$, $\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-}$, are estimated to be $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c1}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0}) < 6.2\times 10^{-5}$, $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}\bar\Sigma^{0}) < 6.5\times 10^{-5}$, $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c1}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-}) < 8.7\times 10^{-5}$ and $\cal{B}$$(\chi_{c2}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar\Sigma^{-}) < 8.8\times 10^{-5}$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: We present a precision study of the $\psip\to\pi^0 J/\psi$ and $\eta J/\psi$ decay modes. The measurements are obtained using $106\times10^6$ $\psi'$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $\ee$ collider operating at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the $\psip$ mass. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\pi^0 J/\psi)=(1.26\pm0.02{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.03{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\eta J/\psi)=(33.75\pm0.17{\rm (stat.)}\pm0.86{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-3}$. The branching fraction ratio $R=\frac{\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\pi^0 J/\psi)}{\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\eta J/\psi)}$ is determined to be $(3.74\pm0.06 {\rm(stat.)}\pm0.04 {\rm(syst.)})\times 10^{-2}$. The precision of these measurements of $\mathcal{B}(\psip\to\pi^{0} J/\psi)$ and $R$ represent a significant improvement over previously published values., Comment: four figures, 12 pages

Abstract: Using a data sample of $2.25\times10^{8}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present the first observation of the decays of $\eta_{c}$ mesons to $\Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^{-}$ and $\Xi^{-}\bar{\Xi}^{+}$. The branching fractions are measured to be $(2.11\pm0.28_{\rm stat.}\pm0.18_{\rm syst.}\pm0.50_{\rm PDG})\times10^{-3}$ and $(0.89\pm0.16_{\rm stat.}\pm0.08_{\rm syst.}\pm0.21_{\rm PDG})\times10^{-3}$ for $\eta_{c} \to \Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^{-}$ and $\Xi^{-}\bar{\Xi}^{+}$, respectively. Abstract: The process $\psi(3686) \to \pi^0 h_c, h_c \to \gamma \eta_c$ has been studied with a data sample of $106 \pm 4$ million $\psi(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the $P$-wave charmonium spin-singlet state $h_c(^1P_1)$ are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the $\pi^0$ recoil mass for 16 exclusive $\eta_c$ decay modes. The results, $M(\hc) = 3525.31 \pm 0.11 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.14 {\rm (syst.)}$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma(\hc) = 0.70 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.22$\,MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive $\eta_c$ decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the $\eta_c$ line-shape parameters in the $E1$ transition $h_c\to\gamma\eta_c$ are made by selecting candidates in the $h_c$ signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 $\eta_c$ decay channels. The resulting $\eta_c$ mass and width values are $M(\eta_c) = 2984.49 \pm 1.16 \pm 0.52$\,MeV/$c^2$ and $\Gamma(\eta_c) = 36.4 \pm 3.2 \pm 1.7$\,MeV., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Using a sample of $(225.3\pm 2.8)\times 10^{6}$ $J/\psi$ decays collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, searches for invisible decays of $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ in $J/\psi\to\phi\eta$ and $\phi\eta^\prime$ are performed. Decays of $\phi \to K^{+}K^{-}$ are used to tag the $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ decays. Abstract: A grand challenge of nanoscience is to master the control of structure and properties in order to go beyond present day functionality. The creation of nanostructures via atom manipulation by means of a scanning probe represents one of the great achievements of the nano era. Here we build on this achievement to self-assemble nanostructures within quantum corrals. The structuring is guided by the quantum confinement of the electronic density of a silver metallic substrate within the corrals. We experimentally demonstrate different self-organized Gd atomic structures confined within 30-nm circular and triangular Fe quantum corrals. This approach enables the creation of model systems to explore and understand new nanomaterials and device prototypes.

Abstract: Using a data sample of $1.06 \times 10^{8}$ $\psip$ events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009, the branching fractions of $\chi_{cJ}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi_{cJ}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ ($J$=0,1,2) are measured{Throughout the text, inclusion of charge conjugate modes is implied if not stated otherwise.}. The results for $\chi_{c0}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi_{c2}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ are consistent with, but much more precise than those of previous measurements. The decays of $\chi_{c1}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi_{cJ}\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ are observed for the first time.

Abstract: We propose a theoretical scheme to realize the coherent coupling of multiple atoms in a quantum network which is composed of a two-dimensional (2D) array of coupled cavities. In the scheme, the pairing off-resonant Raman transitions of different atoms, induced by the cavity modes and external fields, can lead to selective coupling between arbitrary atoms trapped in separated cavities. Based on this physical mechanism, quantum gates between any pair of qubits and parallel two-qubit operations can be performed in the 2D system. Abstract: This paper aims to study the configuration of two components caused by rotational and tidal distortions in the model of a binary system. The potentials of the two distorted components can be approximated to 2nd-degree harmonics. Furthermore, both the accretion luminosity ($\sigma_{i}$) and the irradiative luminosity are included in stellar structure equations. The equilibrium structure of rotationally and tidally distorted star is exactly a triaxial ellipsoids. A formula describing the isobars is presented, and the rotational velocity and the gravitational acceleration at the primary surface simulated. The results show the distortion at the outer layers of the primary increases with temporal variation and system evolution. Besides, it was observed that the luminosity accretion is unstable, and the curve of the energy-generation rate fluctuates after the main sequence in rotation sequences. The luminosity in rotation sequences is slightly weaker than that in non-rotation sequences. As a result, the volume expands slowly. Polar ejection is intensified by the tidal effect. 35. The effect of local dipole moments on the structure and lattice dynamics of K0.98Li0.02TaO3

Abstract: We present high energy x-ray (67 keV) and neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of K$_{1-x}$Li$_x$TaO$_3$ for which the Li content ($x=0.02$) is less than $x_c = 0.022$, the critical value below which no structural phase transitions have been reported in zero field. While the crystal lattice does remain cubic down to T=10 K under both zero-field and field-cooled ($E \le 4$ kV/cm) conditions, indications of crystal symmetry lowering are seen at $T_C=63$ K where the Bragg peak intensity changes significantly. A strong and frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity is observed at ambient pressure, a defining characteristic of relaxors. However an extensive search for static polar nanoregions, which is also widely associated with relaxor materials, detected no evidence of elastic neutron diffuse scattering between 300 K and 10 K. Neutron inelastic scattering methods were used to characterize the transverse acoustic and optic phonons (TA1 and TO1 modes) near the (200) and (002) Bragg peaks. The zone center TO1 mode softens monotonically with cooling but never reaches zero energy in either zero field or in external electric fields of up to 4 kV/cm. These results are consistent with the behavior expected for a dipolar glass in which the local polar moments are frozen and exhibit no long-range order at low temperatures., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: High-pressure resistivity and x-ray diffraction have been measured on La0.85MnO3-d. At low pressures the metal-insulator transition temperature (TMI) increases linearly with pressure up to a critical pressure, P* ~ 3.4 GPa, which is followed by reduction of TMI with increasing pressure. Analysis of the bond distances and bond angles reveal that a bandwidth increase drives the in-crease of TMI for pressure below P*. The reduction of TMI at higher pressures is found to result from Jahn-Teller distortions of the MnO6 octahedra. Abstract: Using neutron elastic and inelastic scattering and high-energy x-ray diffraction, we present a comparison of 40% Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-60% PbTiO$_{3}$ (PMN-60PT) with pure Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) and PbTiO$_{3}$ (PT). We measure the structural properties of PMN-60PT to be identical to pure PT, however, the lattice dynamics are exactly that previously found in relaxors PMN and PZN. PMN-60PT displays a well-defined macroscopic structural transition from a cubic to tetragonal unit cell at 550 K. The diffuse scattering is shown to be weak indicating that the structural distortion is long-range in PMN-60PT and short-range polar correlations (polar nanoregions) are not present. Even though polar nanoregions are absent, the soft optic mode is short-lived for wavevectors near the zone-centre. Therefore, PMN-60PT displays the same waterfall effect as prototypical relaxors PMN and PZN. We conclude that it is random fields resulting from the intrinsic chemical disorder which is the reason for the broad transverse optic mode observed in PMN and PMN-60PT near the zone centre and not due to the formation of short-ranged polar correlations. Through our comparison of PMN, PMN-60PT, and pure PT, we interpret the dynamic and static properties of the PMN-xPT system in terms of a random field model in which the cubic anisotropy term dominates with increasing doping of PbTiO$_{3}$., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

38. 3-D mapping of diffuse scattering in PZN-xPT

Abstract: High energy (67 keV) x-ray diffuse scattering measurements were performed on single crystals of Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$-$x$PbTiO$_3$ (PZN-$x$PT). A novel technique was developed to map out the diffuse scattering distribution in all three dimensions around a large number of Bragg peaks simultaneously, taking advantage of the almost flat Ewald sphere of the high energy x-ray beam. For $x=0, 4.5%$, and 8%, the results are very similar, indicating same type of correlations of polarizations in these compounds. Our results show that the diffuse scattering intensity consists of six $<110>$ rod-type intensities around reciprocal lattice points. These rod-type intensities are very likely due to condensations of soft optic phonon modes, polarized in the perpendicular $<1\bar{1}0>$ directions. A simple model is suggested where these soft phonon modes condense into static \{110\} type planar or ``pancake'' shaped correlations of the in-plane $<1\bar{1}0>$ polarizations., Comment: Resolution/color of many figures are greatly reduced. Abstract: X-ray diffraction studies on a Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN) single crystal sample show the presence of two different structures. An outer-layer exists in the outer most $\sim$ 10 to 50~$\mu$m of the crystal, and undergoes a structural phase transition at the Curie temperature $T_C\approx410$ K. The inside phase is however, very different. The lattice inside the crystal maintains a cubic unit cell, while ferroelectric polarization develops below $T_C$. The lattice parameter of the cubic unit cell remains virtually a constant, i.e., much less variations compared to that of a typical relaxor ferroelectric, in a wide temperature range of 15 K to 750 K. On the other hand, broadening of Bragg peaks and change of Bragg profile line-shapes in both longitudinal and transverse directions at $T_C$ clearly indicate a structural phase transition occurring., Comment: to be submitted for PRB

40. Ground State of Relaxor Ferroelectric $Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$

Abstract: High energy x-ray diffraction measurements on Pb(Zn$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PZN) single crystals show that the system does not have a rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature as previously believed. The new phase (X) in the bulk of the crystal gives Bragg peaks similar to that of a nearly cubic lattice with a slight tetragonal distortion. The Bragg profile remains sharp with no evidence of size broadening due to the polar micro crystals (MC). However, in our preliminary studies of the skin, we have found the expected rhombohedral (R) phase as a surface state. 41. Electric-field induced phase transitions in rhombohedral PZN-xPT

Abstract: High-energy x-ray diffraction experiments peformed on rhombohedral (1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3(PZN-xPT) crystals with x= 4.5 and 8% show that an electric field applied along the [001] direction induces the tetragonal phase, as proposed by Park and Shrout. Our experiments reveal that in 4.5PT such phase change occurs via a third phase with monoclinic symmetry, MA, which is observed at intermediate field values. This is in agreement with first-principles calculations by Fu and Cohen predicting the rotation of the polarization between the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases in this material. A different polarization path between the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases, through a second monoclinic phase, MC, has been previously reported in 8PT. The microscopic characterization of these crystals allows us to explain the ultra-high macroscopic strain observed in PZN-x%PT under an electric field. Abstract: The origin of ultrahigh piezoelectricity in the relaxor ferroelectric PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3-PbTiO3 was studied with an electric field applied along the [001] direction. The zero-field rhombohedral R phase starts to follow the direct polarization path to tetragonal symmetry via an intermediate monoclinic M phase, but then jumps irreversibly to an alternate path involving a different type of monoclinic distortion. Details of the structure and domain configuration of this novel phase are described. This result suggests that there is a nearby R-M phase boundary as found in the Pb(Ti,Zr)O3 system., Comment: REVTeX file. 4 pages. New version after referees' comments

43. In Situ Observation of Magnetic Reconnection Between an Earthward Propagating Flux Rope and the Geomagnetic Field

Abstract: It has been proposed that, in the near-Earth magnetotail, earthward propagating flux ropes can merge with the Earth's dipole magnetic field and dissipate its magnetic energy. However, the reconnection diffusion region related to this process has not been identified. Here we report the first in situ observation of magnetic reconnection between an earthward propagating flux rope and the closed magnetic field lines connecting to Earth. Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft crossed a vertical current sheet between the leading edge of the flux rope (negative B(sub z)) and the geomagnetic field (positive B(sub z)). The subion-scale current sheet, super-Alfvénic electron outflow, Hall magnetic and electric field, conversion of magnetic energy to plasma energy (J·E > 0), and magnetic null were observed during the crossing. All the above signatures indicate that MMS detected the reconnection diffusion region. This result is also relevant to other planets with intrinsic magnetosphere.

45. Finite Element Analysis of the Random Response Suppression of Composite Panels at Elevated Temperatures using Shape Memory Alloy Fibers

Abstract: A feasibility study on the use of shape memory alloys (SMA) for suppression of the random response of composite panels due to acoustic loads at elevated temperatures is presented. The constitutive relations for a composite lamina with embedded SMA fibers are developed. The finite element governing equations and the solution procedures for a composite plate subjected to combined acoustic and thermal loads are presented. Solutions include: 1) Critical buckling temperature; 2) Flat panel random response; 3) Thermal postbuckling deflection; 4) Random response of a thermally buckled panel. The preliminary results demonstrate that the SMA fibers can completely eliminate the thermal postbuckling deflection and significantly reduce the random response at elevated temperatures.
