We demonstrate photon-counting single-pixel imaging in the ultraviolet region. Toward this target, we develop a high-performance compact single-photon detector based on a 4H-SiC single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), where a tailored readout circuit with active hold-off time is designed to restrain detector noise and operate the SPAD in free-running mode. We use structured illumination to reconstruct 192$\times$192 compressed images at a 4 fps frame rate. To show the superior capability of ultraviolet characteristics, we use our single-pixel imaging system to identify and distinguish different transparent objects under low-intensity irradiation, and image ultraviolet light sources. Twin-field quantum key distribution (TF-QKD) has emerged as a promising solution for practical quantum communication over long-haul fiber. However, previous demonstrations on TF-QKD require the phase locking technique to coherently control the twin light fields, inevitably complicating the system with extra fiber channels and peripheral hardware. Here we propose and demonstrate an approach to recover the single-photon interference pattern and realize TF-QKD \emph{without} phase locking. Our approach separates the communication time into reference frames and quantum frames, where the reference frames serve as a flexible scheme for establishing the global phase reference. To do so, we develop a tailored algorithm based on fast Fourier transform to efficiently reconcile the phase reference via data post-processing. We demonstrate no-phase-locking TF-QKD from short to long distances over standard optical fibers. At 50-km standard fiber, we produce a high secret key rate (SKR) of 1.27 Mbit/s, while at 504-km standard fiber, we obtain the repeater-like key rate scaling with a SKR of 34 times higher than the repeaterless secret key capacity. Real world datasets often contain noisy labels, and learning from such datasets using standard classification approaches may not produce the desired performance. In this paper, we propose a Gaussian Mixture Discriminant Analysis (GMDA) with noisy label for each class. We introduce flipping probability and class probability and use EM algorithms to solve the discriminant problem with label noise. We also provide the detail proofs of convergence. We report $^{121}$Sb nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ with $T_{\rm c}=2.5$ K. $^{121}$Sb NQR spectra split after a charge density wave (CDW) transition at $94$ K, which demonstrates a commensurate CDW state. The coexistence of the high temperature phase and the CDW phase between $91$ K and $94$ K manifests that it is a first order phase transition. The CDW order exhibits Tri-Hexagonal deformation with a lateral shift between the adjacent kagome layers, which is consistent with $2 \times 2 \times 2$ superlattice modulation. The superconducting state coexists with CDW order and shows a conventional s-wave behavior in the bulk state.

Long-range active imaging has widespread applications in remote sensing and target recognition. Single-photon light detection and ranging (lidar) has been shown to have high sensitivity and temporal resolution. On the application front, however, the operating range of practical single-photon lidar systems is limited to about tens of kilometers over the Earth's atmosphere, mainly due to the weak echo signal mixed with high background noise. Here, we present a compact coaxial single-photon lidar system capable of realizing 3D imaging at up to 201.5 km. It is achieved by using high-efficiency optical devices for collection and detection, and what we believe is a new noise-suppression technique that is efficient for long-range applications. We show that photon-efficient computational algorithms enable accurate 3D imaging over hundreds of kilometers with as few as 0.44 signal photons per pixel. The entropy or randomness source is an essential ingredient in random number generation. Quantum random number generators generally require well modeled and calibrated light sources, such as a laser, to generate randomness. With uncharacterized light sources, such as sunlight or an uncharacterized laser, genuine randomness is practically hard to be quantified or extracted owing to its unknown or complicated structure. By exploiting a recently proposed source-independent randomness generation protocol, we theoretically modify it by considering practical issues and experimentally realize the modified scheme with an uncharacterized laser and a sunlight source. The extracted randomness is guaranteed to be secure independent of its source and the randomness generation speed reaches 1 Mbps, three orders of magnitude higher than the original realization. Single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR), offering single-photon sensitivity and picosecond time resolution, has been widely adopted for active imaging applications. Long-range active imaging is a great challenge, because the spatial resolution degrades significantly with the imaging range due to the diffraction limit of the optics, and only weak echo signal photons can return but mixed with a strong background noise. Here we propose and demonstrate a photon-efficient LiDAR approach that can achieve sub-Rayleigh resolution imaging over long ranges. This approach exploits fine sub-pixel scanning and a deconvolution algorithm tailored to this long-range application. Using this approach, we experimentally demonstrated active three-dimensional (3D) single-photon imaging by recognizing different postures of a mannequin model at a stand-off distance of 8.2 km in both daylight and night. The observed spatial (transversal) resolution is about 5.5 cm at 8.2 km, which is about twice of the system's resolution. This also beats the optical system's Rayleigh criterion. The results are valuable for geosciences and target recognition over long ranges.

Two dimensional (2D) materials exhibit superior properties in electronic and optoelectronic fields. The wide demand for high performance optoelectronic devices promotes the exploration of diversified 2D materials. Recently, 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as next-generation layered materials with predesigned pi electronic skeletons and highly ordered topological structures, which are promising for tailoring their optoelectronic properties. However, COFs are usually produced as solid powders due to anisotropic growth, making them unreliable to integrate into devices. Here, by selecting tetraphenylethylene (TPE) monomers with photoelectric activity, we designed and synthesized photosensitive 2D COFs with highly ordered topologies and grew 2D COFs in situ on graphene to form well ordered COF graphene heterostructures. Ultrasensitive photodetectors were successfully fabricated with the COFETBC TAPT graphene heterostructure and exhibited an excellent overall performance. Moreover, due to the high surface area and the polarity selectivity of COFs, the photosensing properties of the photodetectors can be reversibly regulated by specific target molecules. Long-range active imaging has a variety of applications in remote sensing and target recognition. Single-photon LiDAR (light detection and ranging) offers single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution, which is desirable for high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging over long distances. Despite important progress, further extending the imaging range presents enormous challenges because only weak echo photons return and are mixed with strong noise. Herein, we tackled these challenges by constructing a high-efficiency, low-noise confocal single-photon LiDAR system, and developing a long-range-tailored computational algorithm that provides high photon efficiency and super-resolution in the transverse domain. Using this technique, we experimentally demonstrated active single-photon 3D-imaging at a distance of up to 45 km in an urban environment, with a low return-signal level of $\sim$1 photon per pixel. Quantum entanglement was termed "spooky action at a distance" in the well-known paper by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen. Entanglement is expected to be distributed over longer and longer distances in both practical applications and fundamental research into the principles of nature. Here, we present a proposal for distributing entangled photon pairs between the Earth and Moon using a Lagrangian point at a distance of 1.28 light seconds. One of the most fascinating features in this long-distance distribution of entanglement is that we can perform Bell test with human supply the random measurement settings and record the results while still maintaining space-like intervals. To realize a proof-of-principle experiment, we develop an entangled photon source with 1 GHz generation rate, about 2 orders of magnitude higher than previous results. Violation of the Bell's inequality was observed under a total simulated loss of 103 dB with measurement settings chosen by two experimenters. This demonstrates the feasibility of such long-distance Bell test over extremely high-loss channels, paving the way for the ultimate test of the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses individual light quanta in quantum superposition states to guarantee unconditional communication security between distant parties. In practice, the achievable distance for QKD has been limited to a few hundred kilometers, due to the channel loss of fibers or terrestrial free space that exponentially reduced the photon rate. Satellite-based QKD promises to establish a global-scale quantum network by exploiting the negligible photon loss and decoherence in the empty out space. Here, we develop and launch a low-Earth-orbit satellite to implement decoy-state QKD with over kHz key rate from the satellite to ground over a distance up to 1200 km, which is up to 20 orders of magnitudes more efficient than that expected using an optical fiber (with 0.2 dB/km loss) of the same length. The establishment of a reliable and efficient space-to-ground link for faithful quantum state transmission constitutes a key milestone for global-scale quantum networks., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Manganese monophosphide (MnP) shows complicated magnetic states varying with both temperature and pressure. We calculate the magnetic and electronic structures of MnP at different pressures using first-principles methods and obtain spiral ground states whose propagation vector changes from the c-axis at low pressure to the b-axis at high pressure. In between, we find a ferromagnetic state, as observed in the experimental phase diagram. The propagation vector of the spiral states is found to vary nonmonotonically with pressure, consistent with neutron measurements. Our results indicate that the complicated magnetic phase diagram originates from a delicate competition between neighboring exchange interactions between the Mn-ions. At all pressures, the electronic structures indicate the existence of quasi-one-dimensional charge carriers, which appear in the ferromagnetic state and become gapped in the spiral state, and anisotropic three-dimensional charge carriers. We argue that this two-fluid behavior originates from the special crystal structure of MnP and may be relevant for understanding the pairing mechanism of the superconductivity at the border of the high pressure spiral phase., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

A large and high-quality single crystal (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFe0.98Se, the optimal superconductor of newly reported (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe system, has been successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal ion-exchange technique. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 42 K is determined by magnetic susceptibility and electric resistivity measurements, and the zero-temperature upper critical magnetic fields are evaluated as 79 and 313 Tesla for the field along the c-axis and the ab-plane, respectively. The ratio of out-of-plane to in-plane electric resistivity,\r{ho}c/\r{ho}ab, is found to increases with decreasing temperature and to reach a high value of 2500 at 50 K, with an evident kink occurring at a characteristic temperature T*=120 K. The negative in-plane Hall coefficient indicates that electron carriers dominate in the charge transport, and the hole contribution is significantly reduced as the temperature is lowered to approach T*. From T* down to Tc, we observe the linear temperature dependences of the in-plane electric resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility for the FeSe layers. Our findings thus reveal that the normal state of (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFe0.98Se becomes highly two-dimensional and anomalous prior to the superconducting transition, providing a new insight into the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information is not uploaded

We study the normal-state and superconducting properties of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As system by specific heat measurements. Both the normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient and superconducting condensation energy are strongly suppressed in the underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. The low-temperature electronic specific heat can be well fitted by either an one-gap or a two-gap BCS-type function for all the superconducting samples. The ratio $\gamma_NT_c^2/H_c^2(0)$ can nicely associate the neutron spin resonance as the bosons in the standard Eliashberg model. However, the value of $\Delta C/T_c\gamma_N$ near optimal doping is larger than the maximum value the model can obtain. Our results suggest that the high-$T_c$ superconductivity in the Fe-based superconductors may be understood within the framework of boson-exchange mechanism but significant modification may be needed to account for the finite-temperature properties., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Recently, Yang and Tan proposed a certificateless key exchange protocol without pairing, and claimed their scheme satisfies forward secrecy, which means no adversary could derive an already-established session key unless the full user secret keys (including a private key and an ephemeral secret key) of both communication parties are compromised. However, in this paper, we point out their protocol is actually not secure as claimed by presenting an attack launched by an adversary who has learned the private key of one party and the ephemeral secret key of the other, but not the full user secret keys of both parties. Furthermore, to make up this flaw, we also provide an improved protocol in which the private key and the ephemeral secret key are closely intertwined with each other for generating the session key, thus above attack can be efficiently resisted.
