The orbital Hall effect in light materials has attracted considerable attention for developing novel orbitronic devices. Here we investigate the orbital torque efficiency and demonstrate the switching of the perpendicularly magnetized materials through the orbital Hall material (OHM), i.e., Zirconium (Zr). The orbital torque efficiency of approximately 0.78 is achieved in the Zr OHM with the perpendicularly magnetized [Co/Pt]3 sample, which significantly surpasses that of the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB/Gd/CoFeB sample (approximately 0.04). Such notable difference is attributed to the different spin-orbit correlation strength between the [Co/Pt]3 sample and the CoFeB/Gd/CoFeB sample, which has been confirmed through the theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the full magnetization switching of the [Co/Pt]3 sample with a switching current density of approximately 2.6x106 A/cm2 has been realized through Zr, which even outperforms that of the W spin Hall material. We present a multiscale theoretical framework to investigate the interplay between diffusion and finite lattice deformation in phase transformation materials. In this framework, we use the Cauchy-Born Rule and the Principle of Virtual Power to derive a thermodynamically consistent theory coupling the diffusion of a guest species (Cahn-Hilliard type) with the finite deformation of host lattices (nonlinear gradient elasticity). We adapt this theory to intercalation materials--specifically Li$_{1-2}$Mn$_2$O$_4$--to investigate the delicate interplay between Li-diffusion and the cubic-to-tetragonal deformation of lattices. Our computations reveal fundamental insights into the microstructural evolution pathways under dynamic discharge conditions, and provide quantitative insights into the nucleation and growth of twinned microstructures during intercalation. Additionally, our results identify regions of stress concentrations (e.g., at phase boundaries, particle surfaces) that arise from lattice misfit and accumulate in the electrode with repeated cycling. These findings suggest a potential mechanism for structural decay in Li$_2$Mn$_2$O$_4$. Topological semimetal materials have become a research hotspot due to their intrinsic strong spin-orbit coupling which leads to large charge-to-spin conversion efficiency and novel transport behaviors. In this work, we have observed a bilinear magnetoelectric resistance (BMER) of up to 0.1 nm2A-1Oe-1 in a singlelayer of sputtered semimetal Pt3Sn at room temperature. Different from previous observations, the value of BMER in sputtered Pt3Sn does not change out-of-plane due to the polycrystalline nature of Pt3Sn. The observation of BMER provides strong evidence of the existence of spin-momentum locking in the sputtered polycrystalline Pt3Sn. By adding an adjacent CoFeB magnetic layer, the BMER value of this bilayer system is doubled compared to the single Pt3Sn layer. This work broadens the material system in BMER study, which paves the way for the characterization of topological states and applications for spin memory and logic devices.

The Orbital Hall effect, which originates from materials with weak spin-orbit coupling, has attracted considerable interest for spin-orbitronic applications. Here, we demonstrate the inverse effect of the orbital Hall effect and observe orbitronic terahertz emission in the Ti and Mn materials. Through spin-orbit transition in the ferromagnetic layer, the generated orbital current can be converted to charge current in the Ti and Mn layers via the inverse orbital Hall effect. Furthermore, the inserted W layer provides an additional conversion of the orbital-charge current in the Ti and Mn layers, significantly enhancing the orbitronic terahertz emission. Moreover, the orbitronic terahertz emission can be manipulated by cooperating with the inverse orbital Hall effect and the inverse spin Hall effect in the different sample configurations. Contrary to topological insulators, topological semimetals possess a nontrivial chiral anomaly that leads to negative magnetoresistance and are hosts to both conductive bulk states and topological surface states with intriguing transport properties for spintronics. Here, we fabricate highly-ordered metallic Pt3Sn and Pt3SnxFe1-x thin films via sputtering technology. Systematic angular dependence (both in-plane and out-of-plane) study of magnetoresistance presents surprisingly robust quadratic and linear negative longitudinal magnetoresistance features for Pt3Sn and Pt3SnxFe1-x, respectively. We attribute the anomalous negative longitudinal magnetoresistance to the type-II Dirac semimetal phase (pristine Pt3Sn) and/or the formation of tunable Weyl semimetal phases through symmetry breaking processes, such as magnetic-atom doping, as confirmed by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, Pt3Sn and Pt3SnxFe1-x show the promising performance for facilitating the development of advanced spin-orbit torque devices. Understanding the rich physics of magnetization dynamics in perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnets (p-SAFs) is crucial for developing next-generation spintronic devices. In this work, we systematically investigate the magnetization dynamics in p-SAFs combining time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) measurements with theoretical modeling. These model analyses, based on a Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert approach incorporating exchange coupling, provide details about the magnetization dynamic characteristics including the amplitudes, directions, and phases of the precession of p-SAFs under varying magnetic fields. These model-predicted characteristics are in excellent quantitative agreement with TR-MOKE measurements on an asymmetric p-SAF. We further reveal the damping mechanisms of two procession modes co-existing in the p-SAF and successfully identify individual contributions from different sources, including Gilbert damping of each ferromagnetic layer, spin pumping, and inhomogeneous broadening. Such a comprehensive understanding of magnetization dynamics in p-SAFs, obtained by integrating high-fidelity TR-MOKE measurements and theoretical modeling, can guide the design of p-SAF-based architectures for spintronic applications., Comment: Published in Phys. In the course of searching for promising topological materials for applications in future topological electronics, we evaluated spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in high-quality sputtered ${\delta}-$TaN/Co20Fe60B20 devices through spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance ST-FMR and spin pumping measurements. From the ST-FMR characterization we observed a significant linewidth modulation in the magnetic Co20Fe60B20 layer attributed to the charge-to-spin conversion generated from the ${\delta}-$TaN layer. Remarkably, the spin-torque efficiency determined from ST-FMR and spin pumping measurements is as large as ${\Theta} =$ 0.034 and 0.031, respectively. These values are over two times larger than for ${\alpha}-$Ta, but almost five times lower than for ${\beta}-$Ta, which can be attributed to the low room temperature electrical resistivity $\sim 74{\mu}{\Omega}$ cm in ${\delta}-$TaN. A large spin diffusion length of at least $\sim8$ nm is estimated, which is comparable to the spin diffusion length in pure Ta. Comprehensive experimental analysis, together with density functional theory calculations, indicates that the origin of the pronounced SOT effect in ${\delta}-$TaN can be mostly related to a significant contribution from the Berry curvature associated with the presence of a topically nontrivial electronic band structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF). Through additional detailed theoretical analysis, we also found that an isostructural allotrope of the superconducting ${\delta}-$TaN phase, the simple hexagonal structure, ${\theta}-$TaN, has larger Berry curvature, and that, together with expected reasonable charge conductivity, it can also be a promising candidate for exploring a generation of spin-orbit torque magnetic random access memory as cheap, temperature stable, and highly efficient spin current sources., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures

During the reversible insertion of ions, lattices in intercalation materials undergo structural transformations. These lattice transformations generate misfit strains and volume changes that, in turn, contribute to the structural decay of intercalation materials and limit their reversible cycling. In this paper, we draw on insights from shape-memory alloys, another class of phase transformation materials, that also undergo large lattice transformations but do so with negligible macroscopic volume changes and internal stresses. We develop a theoretical framework to predict structural transformations in intercalation compounds and establish crystallographic design rules necessary for forming shape-memory-like microstructures in intercalation materials. We use our framework to systematically screen open-source structural databases comprising n > 5000 pairs of intercalation compounds. We identify candidate compounds, such as Li$_x$Mn$_2$O$_4$ (Spinel), Li$_x$Ti$_2$(PO$_4$)$_3$ (NASICON), that approximately satisfy the crystallographic design rules and can be precisely doped to form shape-memory-like microstructures. Throughout, we compare our analytical results with experimental measurements of intercalation compounds. We find a direct correlation between structural transformations, microstructures, and increased capacity retention in these materials. Topological semimetals (TSs) are promising candidates for low-power spin-orbit torque (SOT) devices due to their large charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. Here, we investigated the charge-to-spin conversion efficiency of amorphous PtSn4 (5 nm)/CoFeB (2.5-12.5 nm) layered structures prepared by a magnetron sputtering method at room temperature. The charge-to-spin ratio of PtSn4/CoFeB bilayers was 0.08, characterized by a spin torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) technique. This ratio can further increase to 0.14 by inducing dopants, like Al and CoSi, into PtSn4. The dopants can also decrease (Al doping) or increase (CoSi doping) the resistivity of PtSn4. We examine the thermal origin of the detected "saw-tooth" shaped Hall resistance (Rxy) signals in the spin-orbit torque switching experiment for antiferromagnetic MnN. Compared with the results of the heavy metal / antiferromagnet bilayers (MnN/Ta), the qualitatively same "saw-tooth" shaped signals also appear in the samples with the heavy metal layer alone (either Ta or Pt) without MnN layer. In addition, The Rxy signal changes oppositely in the devices with Ta and Pt, due to the opposite temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR) of the two materials. All those results are consistent with the "localized Joule heating" mechanism in devices with Hall crosses geometry. Moreover, by utilizing a structure with separated writing current paths and Hall cross area, the quadratic relationship between delta-Rxy and the writing current's amplitude is observed, which provides quantitative evidence of the thermal contribution. These results reveal the dominant thermal artifact in the widely used Hall crosses geometry for Neel vector probing, and also provide a strategy to semi-quantitatively evaluate the thermal effect, which can shed light on a more conclusive experiment design., Comment: All the experiments presented in this paper were carried out and completed before Sep. 2018

A key cause of chemo-mechanical degradation in battery electrodes is that they undergo abrupt phase transformation during the charging/discharging cycle. This phase transformation is accompanied by lattice misfit strains that nucleate microcracks, induce fracture and, in extreme cases, amorphize the intercalation electrode. In this work, we propose a strategy to prevent the chemo-mechanical degradation of intercalation electrodes: we show that by engineering suitable film strains we can regulate the phase transformations in thin-film intercalation electrodes and circumvent the large volume changes. We test this strategy using a combination of theory and experiment: we first analytically derive the effect of film strain on the electrochemical response of a thin-film intercalation electrode and next apply our analytical model to a representative example (LixV2O5 with multiple phase transformations). We then test our theoretical predictions experimentally. Specifically, we electrochemically cycle thin-film V2O5 electrodes with different film strains and measure their structure, voltage, and stress responses. Our findings show that tensile film strains lower the voltage for phase transformations in thin-film V2O5 electrodes and facilitate their reversible cycling across a wider voltage window without chemo-mechanical degradation. These results suggest that film strain engineering is an alternative approach to preventing chemo-mechanical degradation in intercalation electrodes. Current induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in Fe/Pt bilayers have been investigated utilizing the spin-orbit torque ferromagnetic resonance (SOT-FMR) measurement. Characterization of thin films with different thicknesses indicates existence of a sizable field-like spin-orbit torque competing with the Oersted field induced torque (Oersted torque). The field-like torque is neglected in the standard SOT-FMR method and the presence of a strong field-like torque makes estimation of the spin Hall angle (SHA) problematic. Also, it is challenging to differentiate the field-like torque from the Oersted torque in a radiofrequency measurement. Based on the thickness dependence of field-like torque, anti-damping torque, and Oersted torque, the thickness-dependent SOT-FMR measurement is proposed as a more reliable, self-calibrated approach for characterization of spin-orbit torques.

We investigated temperature dependent current driven spin-orbit torques in magnetron sputtered Ru2Sn3 (4 and 10 nm) /Co20Fe60B20 (5 nm) layered structures with in-plane magnetic anisotropy. The room temperature damping-like and field-like spin torque efficiencies of the amorphous Ru2Sn3 films were measured to be 0.14 +- 0.008 (0.07 +- 0.012) and -0.03 +- 0.006 (-0.20 +- 0.009), for the 4 (10 nm) films respectively, by utilizing the second harmonic Hall technique. The large field-like torque in the relatively thicker Ru2Sn3 (10 nm) thin film is unique compared to the traditional spin Hall materials interfaced with thick magnetic layers with in-plane magnetic anisotropy which typically have dominant damping-like and negligible field-like torques. Additionally, the observed room temperature field-like torque efficiency in Ru2Sn3 (10 nm)/CoFeB (5 nm) is up to three times larger than the damping-like torque (-0.20 +- 0.009 and 0.07 +- 0.012, respectively) and thirty times larger at 50 K (-0.29 +- 0.014 and 0.009 +- 0.017, respectively). The temperature dependence of the field-like torques show dominant contributions from the intrinsic spin Hall effect while the damping-like torques show dominate contributions from the extrinsic spin Hall effects, skew scattering and side jump. Through macro-spin calculations, we found that including field-like torques on the order or larger than the damping-like torque can reduce the switching critical current and decrease magnetization procession for a perpendicular ferromagnetic layer., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Materials

Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) switched utilizing bipolar electric fields have extensive applications in energy-efficient memory and logic devices. Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy linearly lowers the energy barrier of ferromagnetic layer via electric field effect and efficiently switches p-MTJs only with a unipolar behavior. Here we demonstrate a bipolar electric field effect switching of 100-nm p-MTJs with a synthetic antiferromagnetic free layer through voltage-controlled exchange coupling (VCEC). The switching current density, ~1.1x10^5 A/cm^2, is one order of magnitude lower than that of the best-reported spin-transfer torque devices. Theoretical results suggest that electric field induces a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic exchange coupling transition of the synthetic antiferromagnetic free layer and generates a field-like interlayer exchange coupling torque, which cause the bidirectional magnetization switching of p-MTJs. A preliminary benchmarking simulation estimates that VCEC dissipates an order of magnitude lower writing energy compared to spin-transfer torque at the 15-nm technology node. The interaction between strain and spin has received intensive attention in the scientific community due to its abundant physical phenomena and huge technological impact. Until now, there is no experimental report on ultra-high frequency magnetic resonance through the strain-spin coupling for any technologically relevant perpendicular magnetic material. Here we report the experimental detection of the acoustic strain waves that have a response time on the order of 10 picoseconds in perpendicular magnetic [Co/Pd]n multilayers via a femtosecond laser pulse excitation. Through direct measurements of acoustic strain waves, we observe an ultra-high frequency magnetic resonance up to 60 GHz in [Co/Pd]n multilayers. We further report a theoretical model of the strain-spin interaction. Our model reveals that the energy could be transferred efficiently from the strain to the spins and well explains the existence of a steady resonance state through exciting the spin system. The physical origins of the resonance between strain waves and magnetic precession and the requested conditions for obtaining magnetic resonance within thin magnetic films have also been discussed after thorough analysis. Recently magnetic storage and magnetic memory have shifted towards the use of magnetic thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Understanding the magnetic damping in these materials is crucial, but normal Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) measurements face some limitations. The desire to quantify the damping in materials with PMA has resulted in the adoption of Time-Resolved Magneto-optical Kerr Effect (TR-MOKE) measurements. In this paper, we discuss the angle and field dependent signals in TR-MOKE, and utilize a numerical algorithm based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation to provide information on the optimal conditions to run TR-MOKE measurements.

Perpendicular magnetic materials with low damping constant and high thermal stability have great potential for realizing high-density, non-volatile, and low-power consumption spintronic devices, which can sustain operation reliability for high processing temperatures. In this work, we study the Gilbert damping constant ({\alpha}) of perpendicularly magnetized W/CoFeB/MgO films with a high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and superb thermal stability. The {\alpha} of these PMA films annealed at different temperatures is determined via an all-optical Time-Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect method. We find that {\alpha} of these W/CoFeB/MgO PMA films decreases with increasing annealing temperature, reaches a minimum of {\alpha} = 0.016 at an annealing temperature of 350 {\deg}C, and then increases to 0.024 after post-annealing at 400 {\deg}C. The minimum {\alpha} observed at 350 {\deg}C is rationalized by two competing effects as the annealing temperature becomes higher: the enhanced crystallization of CoFeB and dead-layer growth occurring at the two interfaces of the CoFeB layer. We further demonstrate that {\alpha} of the 400 {\deg}C-annealed W/CoFeB/MgO film is comparable to that of a reference Ta/CoFeB/MgO PMA film annealed at 300 {\deg}C, justifying the enhanced thermal stability of the W-seeded CoFeB films., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

The spin-orbit torque (SOT) arising from materials with large spin-orbit coupling promises a path for ultra-low power and fast magnetic-based storage and computational devices. We investigated the SOT from magnetron-sputtered BixSe(1-x) thin films in BixSe(1-x)/CoFeB heterostructures by using a dc planar Hall method. Remarkably, the spin Hall angle (SHA) was found to be as large as 18.83, which is the largest ever reported at room temperature (RT). Moreover, switching of a perpendicular CoFeB multilayer using SOT from the BixSe(1-x) has been observed with the lowest-ever switching current density reported in a bilayer system: 2.3 * 105 A/cm2 at RT. The giant SHA, smooth surface, ease of growth of the films on silicon substrate, successful growth and switching of a perpendicular CoFeB multilayer on BixSe(1-x) film opens a path for use of BixSe(1-x) topological insulator (TI) material as a spin-current generator in SOT-based memory and logic devices., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

The large spin orbit coupling in topological insulators results in helical spin-textured Dirac surface states that are attractive for topological spintronics. These states generate an efficient spin-orbit torque on proximal magnetic moments at room temperature. However, memory or logic spin devices based upon such switching require a non-optimal three terminal geometry, with two terminals for the writing current and one for reading the state of the device. An alternative two terminal device geometry is now possible by exploiting the recent discovery of a unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers and (at low temperature) in magnetically doped topological insulator heterostructures. We report the observation of unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance in a technologically relevant device geometry that combines a topological insulator with a conventional ferromagnetic metal. Our devices show a figure-of-merit (magnetoresistance per current density per total resistance) that is comparable to the highest reported values in all-metal Ta/Co bilayers.

Strain-mediated voltage control of magnetization in piezoelectric/ferromagnetic systems is a promising mechanism to implement energy-efficient spintronic memory devices. Here, we demonstrate giant voltage manipulation of MgO magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) on a Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 (PMN-PT) piezoelectric substrate with (001) orientation. It is found that the magnetic easy axis, switching field, and the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) of the MTJ can be efficiently controlled by strain from the underlying piezoelectric layer upon the application of a gate voltage. Repeatable voltage controlled MTJ toggling between high/low-resistance states is demonstrated. More importantly, instead of relying on the intrinsic anisotropy of the piezoelectric substrate to generate the required strain, we utilize anisotropic strain produced using local gating scheme, which is scalable and amenable to practical memory applications. Additionally, the adoption of crystalline MgO-based MTJ on piezoelectric layer lends itself to high TMR in the strain-mediated MRAM devices.

We investigate the structural stability and magnetic properties of cubic, tetragonal and hexagonal phases of Mn3Z (Z=Ga, Sn and Ge) Heusler compounds using first-principles density-functional theory. We propose that the cubic phase plays an important role as an intermediate state in the phase transition from the hexagonal to the tetragonal phases. Consequently, Mn3Ga and Mn3Ge behave differently from Mn3Sn, because the relative energies of the cubic and hexagonal phases are different. This result agrees with experimental observations from these three compounds. The weak ferromagnetism of the hexagonal phase and the perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the tetragonal phase obtained in our calculations are also consistent with experiment., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures and 2 tables

Although topological surface states are known to be robust against non-magnetic surface perturbations, their band dispersions and spatial distributions are still sensitive to the surface defects. Take Bi2Se3 as an example, we demonstrated that Se vacancies modifies the surface band structures considerably. When large numbers of Se vacancies exist on the surface, topological surface states may sink down from the first to second quintuple layer and get separated from the vacancies. We report on perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in a Pt/Co2FeAl/MgO sandwiched structure with a thick Co2FeAl layer of 2-2.5 nm. The PMA is thermally stable that the anisotropy energy density Ku is 1.3{\times}106 erg/cm3 for the structure with 2 nm Co2FeAl after annealing at 350 oC. The thicknesses of Co2FeAl and MgO layers greatly affect the PMA.
