The ``Shockless Explosion Combustion" (SEC) concept for gas turbine combustors, introduced in 2014, approximates constant volume combustion (CVC) by harnessing acoustic confinement of autoigniting gas packets. The resulting pressure waves simultaneously transmit combustion energy to a turbine plenum and facilitate the combustor's recharging against an average pressure gain. Challenges in actualizing an SEC-driven gas turbine include i) the creation of charge stratifications for nearly homogeneous autoignition, ii) protecting the turbo components from combustion-induced pressure fluctuations, iii) providing evidence that efficiency gains comparable to those of CVC over deflagrative combustion can be realized, and iv) designing an effective one-way intake valve. This work addresses challenges i)-iii) utilizing computational engine models incorporating a quasi-one-dimensional combustor, zero- and two-dimensional compressor and turbine plena, and quasi-stationary turbo components. Two SEC operational modes are identified which fire at roughly one and two times the combustors' acoustic frequencies. Results for SEC-driven gas turbines with compressor pressure ratios of 6:1 and 20:1 reveal 1.5-fold mean pressure gains across the combustors. Assuming ideally efficient compressors and turbines, efficiency gains over engines with deflagration-based combustors of 30% and 18% are realized, respectively. With absolute values of 52% and 66%, the obtained efficiencies are close to the theoretical Humphrey cycle efficiencies of 54% and 65% for the mentioned pre-compression ratios. Detailed thermodynamic cycle analyses for individual gas parcels suggest that there is room for further efficiency gains through optimized plenum and combustor designs.

Lack of skills is arguably one of the most important determinants of high levels of unemployment and poverty. In response, policymakers often initiate vocational training programs in effort to enhance skill formation among the youth. Using a regression-discontinuity design, we examine a large youth training intervention in Nepal. We find, twelve months after the start of the training program, that the intervention generated an increase in non-farm employment of 10 percentage points (ITT estimates) and up to 31 percentage points for program compliers (LATE estimates). We also detect sizeable gains in monthly earnings. Women who start self-employment activities inside their homes largely drive these impacts. We argue that low baseline educational levels and non-farm employment levels and Nepal's social and cultural norms towards women drive our large program impacts. Our results suggest that the program enables otherwise underemployed women to earn an income while staying at home - close to household errands and in line with the socio-cultural norms that prevent them from taking up employment outside the house.

This document is a Pilot Study Work Plan (PSWP) for a PlumeStop® permeable reactive barrier (PRB) at the Base Support Building (BSB; the Site) located at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. The Site has been designated as Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) 014 under KSC’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program. This document was prepared by AECOM Technical Services, Inc. (AECOM) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity Contract 80KSC019D0010, Task Order 80KSC021F0096. This PSWP details the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) being installed at the BSB to decrease concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in downgradient groundwater using PlumeStop®. PlumeStop® is a colloidal activated carbon that PFAS compounds readily adsorb to. This PSWP outlines the design criteria, injection plan, and performance monitoring schedule for the proposed PlumeStop® PRB study that will guide the possible selection for use and future design of future full-scale PlumeStop® PRBs at KSC.

Small-scale effects of turbulent mixing are numerically investigated by applying the map-based, stochastic, one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model to confined planar jets. The model validation is carried out for the momentum transport by comparing ODT results to available reference data for the bulk Reynolds numbers $Re=20\,000$ and $40\,000$. Various pointwise statistical quantities are computed and compared to the available reference data. We show that these quantities can be captured well, or at least to a reasonable extent, by the stand-alone model formulation and for fixed model parameters. Only the root-mean-square velocity fluctuations remain systematically underestimated in the ODT results (by an approximate factor of $1.5$). Afterwards, the turbulent transport of a passive scalar is addressed for the Schmidt numbers $Sc=1$ and $1250$. For the high Schmidt number and in contrast to the velocity fluctuations, it is shown that the scalar fluctuation variance is up to ten times larger in the ODT simulations resolving the Batchelor scale. The fluctuation variance is notably smaller for the lower Schmidt number, but exhibits better agreement with the references at a nominally higher Schmidt number. We suggest that this is due to implicit filtering in the references, which barely resolve the Kolmogorov scale. ODT turbulence spectra support this interpretation since a Batchelor-like scalar turbulence spectrum is only observed for the higher Schmidt number. With the aid of these spectra and the fluctuation statistics we conclude that implicit filtering has a similar effect as a reduction of the Schmidt number., Comment: Accepted by Chemical Engineering Science

We present CAM (comparative argumentative machine), a novel open-domain IR system to argumentatively compare objects with respect to information extracted from the Common Crawl. Facial analysis technologies have recently measured up to the capabilities of expert clinicians in syndrome identification. To date, these technologies could only identify phenotypes of a few diseases, limiting their role in clinical settings where hundreds of diagnoses must be considered. We developed a facial analysis framework, DeepGestalt, using computer vision and deep learning algorithms, that quantifies similarities to hundreds of genetic syndromes based on unconstrained 2D images. DeepGestalt is currently trained with over 26,000 patient cases from a rapidly growing phenotype-genotype database, consisting of tens of thousands of validated clinical cases, curated through a community-driven platform. DeepGestalt currently achieves 91% top-10-accuracy in identifying over 215 different genetic syndromes and has outperformed clinical experts in three separate experiments. We suggest that this form of artificial intelligence is ready to support medical genetics in clinical and laboratory practices and will play a key role in the future of precision medicine.

We present an analysis on optimizing performance of a single C++11 source code using the Alpaka hardware abstraction library. For this we use the general matrix multiplication (GEMM) algorithm in order to show that compilers can optimize Alpaka code effectively when tuning key parameters of the algorithm. We do not intend to rival existing, highly optimized DGEMM versions, but merely choose this example to prove that Alpaka allows for platform-specific tuning with a single source code. In addition we analyze the optimization potential available with vendor-specific compilers when confronted with the heavily templated abstractions of Alpaka. We specifically test the code for bleeding edge architectures such as Nvidia's Tesla P100, Intel's Knights Landing (KNL) and Haswell architecture as well as IBM's Power8 system. On some of these we are able to reach almost 50\% of the peak floating point operation performance using the aforementioned means. With the appearance of the heterogeneous platform OpenPower,many-core accelerator devices have been coupled with Power host processors for the first time. Towards utilizing their full potential, it is worth investigating performance portable algorithms that allow to choose the best-fitting hardware for each domain-specific compute task. Suiting even the high level of parallelism on modern GPGPUs, our presented approach relies heavily on abstract meta-programming techniques, which are essential to focus on fine-grained tuning rather than code porting. With this in mind, the CUDA-based open-source plasma simulation code PIConGPU is currently being abstracted to support the heterogeneous OpenPower platform using our fast porting interface cupla, which wraps the abstract parallel C++11 kernel acceleration library Alpaka. We demonstrate how PIConGPU can benefit from the tunable kernel execution strategies of the Alpaka library, achieving portability and performance with single-source kernels on conventional CPUs, Power8 CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted on IWOPH 2016

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures

Porting applications to new hardware or programming models is a tedious and error prone process. Every help that eases these burdens is saving developer time that can then be invested into the advancement of the application itself instead of preserving the status-quo on a new platform. The Alpaka library defines and implements an abstract hierarchical redundant parallelism model. The model exploits parallelism and memory hierarchies on a node at all levels available in current hardware. By doing so, it allows to achieve platform and performance portability across various types of accelerators by ignoring specific unsupported levels and utilizing only the ones supported on a specific accelerator. All hardware types (multi- and many-core CPUs, GPUs and other accelerators) are supported for and can be programmed in the same way. The Alpaka C++ template interface allows for straightforward extension of the library to support other accelerators and specialization of its internals for optimization. Running Alpaka applications on a new (and supported) platform requires the change of only one source code line instead of a lot of \#ifdefs., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We analyze the stability of excitonic ground states in the two-band Hubbard model with additional electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings using a combination of mean-field and variational cluster approaches. We show that both the interband Coulomb interaction and the electron-phonon interaction will cooperatively stabilize a charge density wave (CDW) state which typifies an "excitonic" CDW if predominantly triggered by the effective interorbital electron-hole attraction or a "phononic" CDW if mostly caused by the coupling to the lattice degrees of freedom. By contrast, the Hund's rule coupling promotes an excitonic spin density wave. We determine the transition between excitonic charge and spin density waves and comment on a fixation of the phase of the excitonic order parameter that would prevent the formation of a superfluid condensate of excitons. The implications for exciton condensation in several material classes with strongly correlated electrons are discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We show that double-layer graphene (DLG), where an external potential induces an charge-imbalance between $n$- and $p$-type layers, is a promising candidate to realize an exciton condensate in equilibrium. To prove this phenomenon experimentally, we suggest to couple two DLG systems, separated by a thin insulating barrier, and measure the excitonic Josephson effect. For this purpose we calculate the ac and dc Josephson currents induced by tunneling excitons and show that the former only occurs when the gate potentials of the DLG systems differ, irrespective of the phase relationship of their excitonic order parameters. The region surrounding the excitonic insulator phase is a three-component plasma composed of electrons, holes, and excitons. Due to the extended nature of the excitons, their presence influences the surrounding electrons and holes. We analyze this correlation. To this end, we calculate the density of bound electrons, the density of electrons in the correlated state, the momentum-resolved exciton density, and the momentum-resolved density of electron-hole pairs that are correlated but unbound. We find qualitative differences in the electron-hole correlations between the weak-coupling and the strong-coupling regime., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The influence of phonons on the formation of the excitonic insulator has hardly been analyzed so far. Recent experiments on $\rm Ta_2NiSe_5$, 1$T$-$\rm TiSe_2$, and $\rm TmSe_{0.45}Te_{0.55}$, being candidates for realizing the excitonic-insulator state, suggest, however, that the underlying lattice plays a significant role. Employing the Kadanoff-Baym approach we address this issue theoretically. We show that owing to the electron-phonon coupling a static lattice distortion may arise at the excitonic instability. Most importantly such a distortion will destroy the acoustic phase mode being present if the electron-hole pairing and condensation is exclusively driven by the Coulomb interaction. The absence of off-diagonal long-range order, when lattice degrees of freedom are involved, challenges that excitons in these materials form a superfluid condensate of Bose particles or Cooper pairs composed of electrons and holes., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, final version

A Time Projection Chamber (TPC) using micro-pattern gas detectors is planned as the main tracking device for a detector at the next Linear Collider. A novel support structure for Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs), which minimizes the material and improves the flatness of the foils, has been developed and tested with multiple GEM modules in a large TPC prototype at DESY. Reducing dead material at the GEM module boundaries improves the field homogeneity. In addition, it was shown in simulation that a field shaping ring at the border of the module can improve the charge collection in regions with non-homogeneous fields. This shaping wire was integrated into the module design and a successful test beam campaign with three modules has been carried out. We address the question of the origin of the recently discovered chiral property of the charge-density-wave phase in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ which so far lacks a microscopic understanding. We argue that the lattice degrees of freedom seems to be crucial for this novel phenomenon. We motivate a theoretical model that takes into account one valence and three conduction bands, a strongly screened Coulomb interaction between the electrons, as well as the coupling of the electrons to a transverse optical phonon mode. The Falicov-Kimball model extended in this way possesses a charge-density-wave state at low temperatures, which is accompanied by a periodic lattice distortion. The charge ordering is driven by a lattice deformation and electron-hole pairing (excitonic) instability in combination. We show that both electron-phonon interaction and phonon-phonon interaction must be taken into account at least up to quartic order in the lattice displacement to achieve a stable chiral charge order. The chiral property is exhibited in the ionic displacements. Furthermore, we provide the ground-state phase diagram of the model and give an estimate of the electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction constants for 1$T$-TiSe$_2$., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, revised and extended version

The International Large Detector (ILD) --a detector concept for the International Linear Collider (ILC)-- foresees a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) as its main tracking detector. Currently, the R&D efforts for such a TPC focus on studies using a large prototype that can accommodate up to seven read-out modules which are comparable to the ones that would be used in the final ILD TPC. The DESY TPC group has developed such a module using GEMs for the gas amplification, which are mounted on thin ceramic frames. We act on the suggestion that an excitonic insulator state might separate---at very low temperatures---a semimetal from a semiconductor and ask for the nature of these transitions. Based on the analysis of electron-hole pairing in the extended Falicov-Kimball model, we show that tuning the Coulomb attraction between both species, a continuous crossover between a BCS-like transition of Cooper-type pairs and a Bose-Einstein condensation of preformed tightly-bound excitons might be achieved in a solid-state system. Based on the SO(2)-invariant slave-boson scheme, the static charge, orbital, and excitonic susceptibilities in the extended Falicov-Kimball model are calculated. Analyzing the phase without long-range order we find instabilities towards charge order, orbital order, and the excitonic insulator (EI) phase. The instability towards the EI is in agreement with the saddle-point phase diagram. We also evaluate the dynamic excitonic susceptibility, which allows the investigation of uncondensed excitons. We find qualitatively different features of the exciton dispersion at the semimetal-EI and at the semiconductor-EI transition supporting a crossover scenario between a BCS-type electron-hole condensation and a Bose-Einstein condensation of preformed bound electron-hole pairs., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, final version

We study the effects of interband hybridization within the framework of an extended Falicov-Kimball model with itinerant $c$ and $f$ electrons. An explicit interband hybridization breaks the U(1) symmetry associated with the conservation of the difference between the total number of particles in each band. As a result, the degeneracy between multipolar electric and chiral orderings is lifted. We analyze the weak- and strong-coupling limits of the $c$-$f$ electron Coulomb interaction at zero temperature, and derive the corresponding mean-field quantum phase diagrams at half-filling for a model defined on a square lattice., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We re-examine the three-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model with dispersive $f$ electrons at half-filling, addressing the dispute about the formation of an excitonic condensate, which is closely related to the problem of electronic ferroelectricity. To this end, we work out a slave-boson functional integral representation of the suchlike extended Falicov-Kimball model that preserves the $SO(2)\otimes U(1)^{\otimes 2}$ invariance of the action. We find a spontaneous pairing of $c$ electrons with $f$ holes, building an excitonic insulator state at low temperatures, also for the case of initially non-degenerate orbitals. This is in contrast to recent predictions of scalar slave-boson mean-field theory but corroborates previous Hartree-Fock and RPA results. Our more precise treatment of correlation effects, however, leads to a substantial reduction of the critical temperature. The different behavior of the partial densities of states in the weak and strong inter-orbital Coulomb interaction regimes supports a BCS-BEC transition scenario., Comment: slightly revised version, 10 pages, 6 figures

The 94-GHz (W-band) Cloud Radar System (CRS) has been developed and flown on a NASA ER-2 high-altitude (20 km) aircraft. The CRS is a fully coherent, polarimeteric Doppler radar that is capable of detecting clouds and precipitation from the surface up to the aircraft altitude in the lower stratosphere. The radar is especially well suited for cirrus cloud studies because of its high sensitivity and fine spatial resolution. This paper describes the CRS motivation, instrument design, specifications, calibration, and preliminary data &om NASA s Cirrus Regional Study of Tropical Anvils and Cirrus Layers - Florida Area Cirrus Experiment (CRYSTAL-FACE) field campaign. The unique combination of CRS with other sensors on the ER-2 provides an unprecedented opportunity to study cloud radiative effects on the global energy budget. CRS observations are being used to improve our knowledge of atmospheric scattering and attenuation characteristics at 94 GHz, and to provide datasets for algorithm implementation and validation for the upcoming NASA CloudSat mission that will use a 94-GHz spaceborne cloud radar to provide the first direct global survey of the vertical structure of cloud systems.

Improvement in our understanding of the radiative impact of clouds on the climate system requires a comprehensive view of clouds including their physical dimensions, dynamical generation processes, and detailed microphysical properties. To this end, millimeter vave radar is a powerful tool by which clouds can be remotely sensed. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has developed the Cloud Radar System (CRS). CRS is a highly sensitive 94 GHz (W-band) pulsed-Doppler polarimetric radar that is designed to fly on board the NASA high-altitude ER-2 aircraft. The instrument is currently the only millimeter wave radar capable of cloud and precipitation measurements from above most all clouds. Because it operates from high-altitude, the CRS provides a unique measurement perspective for cirrus cloud studies. The CRS emulates a satellite view of clouds and precipitation systems thus providing valuable measurements for the implementation and algorithm validation for the upcoming NASA CloudSat mission that is designed to measure ice cloud distributions on the global scale using a spaceborne 94 GHz radar. This paper describes the CRS instrument and preliminary data from the recent Cirrus Regional Study of Tropical Anvils and Cirrus Layers - Florida Area Cirrus Experiment (CRYSTAL-FACE). The radar design is discussed. Characteristics of the radar are given. A block diagram illustrating functional components of the radar is shown. The performance of the CRS during the CRYSTAL-FACE campaign is discussed.

A primary goal of the NASA Tropospheric Chemistry Program (TCP) is to "contribute substantially to scientific understanding of human impacts on the global troposphere". In order to analyze global or regional trends and factors of the troposphere chemistry, for example, its oxidation capacity or composition, a continuous global/regional data coverage as well as model simulations are needed. The Global Tropospheric Experiment (GTE), a major component of the TCP, provides data vital to these questions via aircraft measurement of key trace chemical species in various remote regions of the world. Another component in NASA's effort are satellite projects for exploration of tropospheric chemistry and dynamics. A unique data product is the Tropospheric Ozone Residual (TOR) utilizing global tropospheric ozone data. Another key research tool are simulation studies of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics for the theoretical understanding of the atmosphere, the extrapolation of observed trends, and for sensitivity studies assessing a changing anthropogenic impact to air chemistry and climate. In the context with model simulations, field data derived from satellites or (airborne) field missions are needed for two purposes: 1. To initialize and validate model simulations, and 2., to interpret field data by comparison to model simulation results in order to analyze global or regional trends and deviations from standard tropospheric chemistry and transport conditions as defined by the simulations. Currently, there is neither a sufficient global data coverage available nor are existing well established global circulation models. The NASA LARC CTM model is currently not yet in a state to accomplish a sufficient tropospheric chemistry simulation, so that the current research under this cooperative agreement focuses on utilizing field data products for direct interpretation. They will be also available for model testing and a later interpretation with a finally utilized model.

We are developing a portable, eye-safe, ground-based ozone lidar instrument specialized for ozone differential absorption lidar (DIAL) measurements in the troposphere. This prototype instrument is intended to operate at remote field sites and to serve as the basic unit for future monitoring projects requiring multi-instrument networks, such as that proposed for the Global Tropospheric Ozone Project (GTOP). GTOP is currently being formulated by a scientific panel of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project to meet its goal to better understand the processes that control the global distribution of tropospheric ozone. In order for the lidar to be widely deployed in networks, it must be fairly easy to use and maintain as well as being cost-competitive with ground station launching ozone sondes which operate several times a day. To achieve these goals, emphasis is placed upon the incorporation of: (1) all-solid state transmitters which can reliably produce 20-40 mJ pulses; (2) a highly efficient, narrow-bandpass receiver; (3) dual analog and photon-counting detector channels; and (4) flexible, user-friendly control software.

A ground-based lidar system in the wavelength region of 1.45-4 microns for the remote measurement of methane is described. The laser transmitter consists of an injection-seeded Nd:YAG laser which pumps an OPO (optical parametric oscillator). The OPO output is tunable from 1.45-4 microns, with a bandwidth less than 500 MHz, and a pulse energy of 1 to 3 mJ at 3.29 microns. The receiver is cart-mounted and consists of a 14" telescope with 1.57 and 3.29 micron detector channels. A fast oscilloscope is used for data acquisition. The system performance will be tested through measurements of sources of atmospheric methane.

The objective of this project is to develop a portable, eye-safe, ground-based ozone lidar instrument specialized for ozone differential absorption lidar (DIAL) measurements in the troposphere. This prototype instrument is intended to operate at remote field sites and to serve as the basic unit for monitoring projects requiring multi-instrument networks, such as that discussed in the science plan for the Global Tropospheric Ozone Project (GTOP). This instrument will be based at HU for student training in lidar technology as well as atmospheric ozone data analysis and interpretation. It will be also available for off-site measurement campaigns and will serve as a test bed for further instrument development. Later development beyond this grant to extend the scientific usefulness of the instrument may include incorporation of an aerosol channel and upgrading the laser to make stratospheric ozone measurements. Undergraduate and graduate students have been and will be active participants in this research effort.

The status in the beginning of the report period was that the existing General Circulation Model (GCM) was running with a chemistry module compiled for stratospheric simulation studies. The chemistry simulation was not working sufficiently in the troposphere and any tropospheric trace gas sources or dry deposition sinks were not yet incorporated. The current status concerning the chemistry module is that the chemistry simulation has been modified to also simulate the chemistry in the troposphere with resulting mixing ratios close to other model simulations as described in Olson et al. (1996). The mechanism to incorporate trace gas source and dry deposition sinks, testing for H202, CH300H, 03, HCHO, HN03, and N02, are incorporated and is currently being tested. Existing model and development versions include: the full GCM model, currently still running with the original stratospheric chemistry module; an off-line version of the GCM, i.e. wind and photolysis rates are pre-calculated and prescribed in read-in arrays; a box model version of the modified chemistry module for developments and first tests of new modifications; and a box model with the same chemistry simulated but flexible partitioning and integration methods for test purposes of those. The grantee's work focused mainly on three areas: trace gas sources and dry deposition; method to introduce a NO source instead of a NO(x) source; and investigating integration methods.
