The magnetic orientation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is of great importance to understand their space weather effects. Although many evidences suggest that CMEs can undergo significant rotation during the early phases of evolution in the solar corona, there are few reports that CMEs rotate in the interplanetary space. In this work, we use multi-spacecraft observations and a numerical simulation starting from the lower corona close to the solar surface to understand the CME event on 2021 December 4, with an emphatic investigation of its rotation. This event is observed as a partial halo CME from the back side of the Sun by coronagraphs, and reaches the BepiColombo spacecraft and the MAVEN/Tianwen-1 as a magnetic flux rope-like structure. The simulation discloses that in the solar corona the CME is approximately a translational motion, while the interplanetary propagation process evidences a gradual change of axis orientation of the CME's flux rope-like structure. It is also found that the downside and the right flank of the CME moves with the fast solar wind, and the upside does in the slow-speed stream. The different parts of the CME with different speeds generate the nonidentical displacements of its magnetic structure, resulting in the rotation of the CME in the interplanetary space. Furthermore, at the right flank of the CME exists a corotating interaction region (CIR), which makes the orientation of the CME alter, and also deviates from its route due to the CME. This paper addresses the challenge of animal re-identification, an emerging field that shares similarities with person re-identification but presents unique complexities due to the diverse species, environments and poses. To facilitate research in this domain, we introduce OpenAnimals, a flexible and extensible codebase designed specifically for animal re-identification. We conduct a comprehensive study by revisiting several state-of-the-art person re-identification methods, including BoT, AGW, SBS, and MGN, and evaluate their effectiveness on animal re-identification benchmarks such as HyenaID, LeopardID, SeaTurtleID, and WhaleSharkID. Our findings reveal that while some techniques generalize well, many do not, underscoring the significant differences between the two tasks. To bridge this gap, we propose ARBase, a strong \textbf{Base} model tailored for \textbf{A}nimal \textbf{R}e-identification, which incorporates insights from extensive experiments and introduces simple yet effective animal-oriented designs. Experiments demonstrate that ARBase consistently outperforms existing baselines, achieving state-of-the-art performance across various benchmarks.

Pest and disease classification is a challenging issue in agriculture. The performance of deep learning models is intricately linked to training data diversity and quantity, posing issues for plant pest and disease datasets that remain underdeveloped. This study addresses these challenges by constructing a comprehensive dataset and proposing an advanced network architecture that combines Contrastive Learning and Masked Image Modeling (MIM). The dataset comprises diverse plant species and pest categories, making it one of the largest and most varied in the field. The proposed network architecture demonstrates effectiveness in addressing plant pest and disease recognition tasks, achieving notable detection accuracy. This approach offers a viable solution for rapid, efficient, and cost-effective plant pest and disease detection, thereby reducing agricultural production costs. Drawing inspiration from the recent breakthroughs in the \ce{Na_{2}BaCo(PO_{4})_{2}} quantum magnet, renowned for its spin supersolidity phase and its potential for revolutionary cooling applications, our study delves into the intricate interplay among lattice, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom within this intriguing compound. Using meticulous temperature, field, and pressure-dependent Raman scattering techniques, we present compelling experimental evidence revealing pronounced crystal-electric field (CEF) excitations, alongside the interplay of CEF-phonon interactions. Notably, our experiments elucidate all electronic transitions from $j_{1 / 2}$ to $j_{3 / 2}$ and from $j_{1 / 2}$ to $j_{5 / 2}$, with energy level patterns closely aligned with theoretical predictions based on point-charge models. Furthermore, the application of a magnetic field and pressure reveals Zeeman splittings characterized by Land\'e-g factors as well as the CEF-phonon resonances. The anomalous shift in coupled peak at low temperatures originates from the hybridization of CEF and phonon excitations due to their close energy proximity. These findings constitute a significant step towards unraveling the fundamental properties of this exotic quantum material for future research in fundamental physics or engineering application.

Thanks to the powerful generative capacity of diffusion models, recent years have witnessed rapid progress in human motion generation. Existing diffusion-based methods employ disparate network architectures and training strategies. The effect of the design of each component is still unclear. In addition, the iterative denoising process consumes considerable computational overhead, which is prohibitive for real-time scenarios such as virtual characters and humanoid robots. For this reason, we first conduct a comprehensive investigation into network architectures, training strategies, and inference processs. Based on the profound analysis, we tailor each component for efficient high-quality human motion generation. Despite the promising performance, the tailored model still suffers from foot skating which is an ubiquitous issue in diffusion-based solutions. To eliminate footskate, we identify foot-ground contact and correct foot motions along the denoising process. By organically combining these well-designed components together, we present StableMoFusion, a robust and efficient framework for human motion generation. Nickel-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising electrode materials in the fields of energy storage (supercapacitors) and conversion (urea oxidation). The rational construction of atomic and electronic structure is crucial for nickel-based LDHs to realize their satisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, we report a facile, ecofriendly, one-step synthesis process to construct petal-like oxygen-deficient NiAl-LDH nanosheets for hybrid super-capacitors (HSCs) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The asprepared NiAl-LDH nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies possess a large specific surface area of 216.6 m2 g-1 and a desirable electronic conductivity of 3.45 * 10-4 S cm-1 to deliver an ultra-high specific capacitance of 2801 F g-1 (700 C g-1) at 1 A g-1. Furthermore, high specific energy of 50.0 W h kg-1 at 400 W kg-1 and excellent cycle stability with 91% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles are achieved by the NiAl-LDHs/CFP (carbon fiber paper) (+)//YP-80F (a commercial activated carbon) (-) HSC. Besides, NiAl-LDH nanosheets also work as an efficient electrocatalyst for UOR, which only requires 1.42 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode to drive 10 mA cm-2 in 1 mol L-1 KOH with 0.33 mol L-1 urea. This remarkable performance is superior to most reported values of previous candidates owing to the thin structure of NiAl-LDH nanosheets for exposing more active sites and abundant oxygen vacancies. In addition, various reaction parameters are investigated to optimize the electrochemical performance. In general, this work paves a new way for the architecture of multifunctional nanostructured energy materials.

Effective regulation of the morphology of transition metal spinel structures is crucial for creating efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts for electrocatalysis of water. In this work, micro-flower NiCo2O4 (F-NCO) assembled by nanosheets via a chemical template method for the simultaneous promotion of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electronic microscope analysis revealed that the thickness of the F-NCO catalyst was only 2.7% of that of the NiCo2O4 bulk (B-NCO), and this ultrathin lamellar structure was conducive to further exposure of the active site and improved reaction kinetics. The F-NCO catalyst exhibited superior HER and OER performance (10 = 236 and 310 mV) and robust long-term stability over the B-NCO catalyst in 1.0 M KOH, with a 2.68-fold and 4.16-fold increase in active surface area and a 0.42-fold and 0.61-fold decrease in charge transfer resistance values, respectively. This micro-flower-structured electrode has remarkable electrocatalytic property and long-term durability, providing a novel insight for characterizing cost-effective and high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Rational design and cost-effective fabrication of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets with extraordinary electrochemical performance is a key challenge for hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs). Herein, we report a facile in situ growth methodology to eco-friendly synthesize hydrophilic NiCo-LDHs nanosheets on biomass waste-derived porous carbon (BC) for robust high-performance HSC cathode. The in situ growth process under ultrasonication realizes the rational arrangement of NiCo-LDHs nanosheets on the surface of BC, which effectively increases the specific surface area, promotes the electronic conductivity and enhances the wettability of NiCo-LDHs nanosheets without affecting their thickness values. With the beneficial effects of ultrathin thickness of LDHs nanosheets (6.20 nm), large specific surface area (2324.1 m2 g-1), low charge transfer resistance (1.65 ohm), and high wettability with electrolyte (34-35 degree), the obtained Ni2Co1-LDHs/BC50 electrode possesses an ultra-high specific capacitance of 2390 F g-1 (956 C g-1) at 1 A g-1, which is superior to most reported values. Furthermore, an assembled Ni2Co1-LDHs/BC50//YP-80F HSC delivers a maximum specific energy of 52.47 Wh kg-1 at 375 W kg-1, and maintains a high capacitance retention of 75.9% even after 4000 cycles. This work provides a facile approach to fabricate LDHs nanosheets based cathode materials for high-performance HSCs.

Rational synthesis of robust layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets for high-energy supercapacitors is full of challenges. Herein, we reported an ultrasonication-assisted strategy to eco-friendly fabricate NiFe-LDHs nanosheets for the enhanced capacitive behavior. The experimental results combined with different advanced characterization tools document that the utilization of ultrasonication has a profound effect on the morphology and thickness of the as-obtained NiFe-LDHs, alternatively affecting the capacitive behavior. It shows that NiFe-LDHs nanosheets prepared with 2-h ultrasonic treatments display the exceptional capacitive performance because of the synergetic effect of ultrathin thickness, large specific surface area, and high mesoporous volume. The maximum specific capacitance of Ni3Fe1-LDHs nanosheets with the thickness of 7.39 nm and the specific surface area of 77.16 m2 g-1 reached 1923 F g-1, which is competitive with most previously reported values. In addition, the maximum specific energy of the assembled NiFe-LDHs//AC asymmetric supercapacitor achieved 49.13 Wh kg-1 at 400 W kg-1. This work provides a green technology to fabricate LDHs nanosheets, and offers deep insights for understanding the relationship between the morphology/structure and capacitive behavior of LDHs nanosheets, which is helpful for achieving high-performance LDHs-based electrode materials.

Transition-metal-based layered double hydroxides (TM-LDHs) nanosheets are promising electrocatalysts in the renewable electrochemical energy conversion system, which are regarded as alternatives to noble metal-based materials. In this review, recent advances on effective and facile strategies to rationally design TM-LDHs nanosheets as electrocatalysts, such as increasing the number of active sties, improving the utilization of active sites (atomic-scale catalysts), modulating the electron configurations, and controlling the lattice facets, are summarized and compared. Then, the utilization of these fabricated TM-LDHs nanosheets for oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, urea oxidation reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, small molecule oxidations, and biomass derivatives upgrading is articulated through systematically discussing the corresponding fundamental design principles and reaction mechanism. Finally, the existing challenges in increasing the density of catalytically active sites and future prospects of TM-LDHs nanosheets-based electrocatalysts in each application are also commented.

Gait recognition is a promising biometric method that aims to identify pedestrians from their unique walking patterns. Silhouette modality, renowned for its easy acquisition, simple structure, sparse representation, and convenient modeling, has been widely employed in controlled in-the-lab research. However, as gait recognition rapidly advances from in-the-lab to in-the-wild scenarios, various conditions raise significant challenges for silhouette modality, including 1) unidentifiable low-quality silhouettes (abnormal segmentation, severe occlusion, or even non-human shape), and 2) identifiable but challenging silhouettes (background noise, non-standard posture, slight occlusion). To address these challenges, we revisit gait recognition pipeline and approach gait recognition from a quality perspective, namely QAGait. Specifically, we propose a series of cost-effective quality assessment strategies, including Maxmial Connect Area and Template Match to eliminate background noises and unidentifiable silhouettes, Alignment strategy to handle non-standard postures. We also propose two quality-aware loss functions to integrate silhouette quality into optimization within the embedding space. Extensive experiments demonstrate our QAGait can guarantee both gait reliability and performance enhancement. Furthermore, our quality assessment strategies can seamlessly integrate with existing gait datasets, showcasing our superiority. Indoor scene generation has attracted significant attention recently as it is crucial for applications of gaming, virtual reality, and interior design. Current indoor scene generation methods can produce reasonable room layouts but often lack diversity and realism. This is primarily due to the limited coverage of existing datasets, including only large furniture without tiny furnishings in daily life. To address these challenges, we propose FurniScene, a large-scale 3D room dataset with intricate furnishing scenes from interior design professionals. Specifically, the FurniScene consists of 11,698 rooms and 39,691 unique furniture CAD models with 89 different types, covering things from large beds to small teacups on the coffee table. To better suit fine-grained indoor scene layout generation, we introduce a novel Two-Stage Diffusion Scene Model (TSDSM) and conduct an evaluation benchmark for various indoor scene generation based on FurniScene. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate the capability of our method to generate highly realistic indoor scenes. Our dataset and code will be publicly available soon.

Recently, CLIP has found practical utility in the domain of pixel-level zero-shot segmentation tasks. The present landscape features two-stage methodologies beset by issues such as intricate pipelines and elevated computational costs. While current one-stage approaches alleviate these concerns and incorporate Visual Prompt Training (VPT) to uphold CLIP's generalization capacity, they still fall short in fully harnessing CLIP's potential for pixel-level unseen class demarcation and precise pixel predictions. To further stimulate CLIP's zero-shot dense prediction capability, we propose SPT-SEG, a one-stage approach that improves CLIP's adaptability from image to pixel. Specifically, we initially introduce Spectral Prompt Tuning (SPT), incorporating spectral prompts into the CLIP visual encoder's shallow layers to capture structural intricacies of images, thereby enhancing comprehension of unseen classes. Subsequently, we introduce the Spectral Guided Decoder (SGD), utilizing both high and low-frequency information to steer the network's spatial focus towards more prominent classification features, enabling precise pixel-level prediction outcomes. Through extensive experiments on two public datasets, we demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art approaches, performing well across all classes and particularly excelling in handling unseen classes. Complex software systems, e.g., Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), interact with the real world; thus, they often behave unexpectedly in uncertain environments. Testing such systems is challenging due to limited resources, time, complex testing infrastructure setup, and the inherent uncertainties in their operating environment. Devising uncertainty-aware testing solutions supported with test optimization techniques can be considered as a mandate for tackling this challenge. This paper proposes an uncertainty-aware and time-aware test case prioritization approach, named UncerPrio, for optimizing a sequence of tests to execute with a multi-objective search. To guide the prioritization with uncertainty, we identify four uncertainty measures: uncertainty measurement (AUM), uncertainty space (PUS), the number of uncertainties (ANU), and uncertainty coverage (PUU). Based on these measures and their combinations, we proposed 10 uncertainty-aware and multi-objective test case prioritization problems, and each problem was additionally defined with one cost objective (execution cost, PET) to be minimized and one effective measure (model coverage, PTR) to be maximized. Moreover, considering time constraints for test executions (i.e., time-aware), we defined 10 time budgets for all the 10 problems for identifying the best strategy in solving uncertainty-aware test prioritization. In our empirical study, we employed four well-known Multi-Objective Search Algorithms (MuOSAs): NSGA-II, MOCell, SPEA2, and CellDE with five use cases from two industrial CPS subject systems, and used Random Algorithm (RS) as the comparison baseline. Results show that all the MuOSAs significantly outperformed RS. The strategy of Prob.6 f(PET,PTR,AUM,ANU) (i.e., the problem with uncertainty measures AUM and ANU combined) achieved the overall best performance in observing uncertainty when using 100% time budget.

In recent years, the rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) has attracted increasing attention due to their potential in a variety of practical applications. The application of LLMs with Embodied Intelligence has emerged as a significant area of focus. Among the myriad applications of LLMs, navigation tasks are particularly noteworthy because they demand a deep understanding of the environment and quick, accurate decision-making. LLMs can augment embodied intelligence systems with sophisticated environmental perception and decision-making support, leveraging their robust language and image-processing capabilities. This article offers an exhaustive summary of the symbiosis between LLMs and embodied intelligence with a focus on navigation. It reviews state-of-the-art models, research methodologies, and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of existing embodied navigation models and datasets. Finally, the article elucidates the role of LLMs in embodied intelligence, based on current research, and forecasts future directions in the field. Autonomous driving systems (ADSs) are capable of sensing the environment and making driving decisions autonomously. These systems are safety-critical, and testing them is one of the important approaches to ensure their safety. However, due to the inherent complexity of ADSs and the high dimensionality of their operating environment, the number of possible test scenarios for ADSs is infinite. Besides, the operating environment of ADSs is dynamic, continuously evolving, and full of uncertainties, which requires a testing approach adaptive to the environment. In addition, existing ADS testing techniques have limited effectiveness in ensuring the realism of test scenarios, especially the realism of weather conditions and their changes over time. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) has demonstrated great potential in addressing challenging problems, especially those requiring constant adaptations to dynamic environments. To this end, we present DeepQTest, a novel ADS testing approach that uses RL to learn environment configurations with a high chance of revealing abnormal ADS behaviors. Specifically, DeepQTest employs Deep Q-Learning and adopts three safety and comfort measures to construct the reward functions. To ensure the realism of generated scenarios, DeepQTest defines a set of realistic constraints and introduces real-world weather conditions into the simulated environment. We employed three comparison baselines, i.e., random, greedy, and a state-of-the-art RL-based approach DeepCOllision, for evaluating DeepQTest on an industrial-scale ADS. Evaluation results show that DeepQTest demonstrated significantly better effectiveness in terms of generating scenarios leading to collisions and ensuring scenario realism compared with the baselines. Point cloud analysis faces computational system overhead, limiting its application on mobile or edge devices. Directly employing small models may result in a significant drop in performance since it is difficult for a small model to adequately capture local structure and global shape information simultaneously, which are essential clues for point cloud analysis. This paper explores feature distillation for lightweight point cloud models. To mitigate the semantic gap between the lightweight student and the cumbersome teacher, we propose bidirectional knowledge reconfiguration (BKR) to distill informative contextual knowledge from the teacher to the student. Specifically, a top-down knowledge reconfiguration and a bottom-up knowledge reconfiguration are developed to inherit diverse local structure information and consistent global shape knowledge from the teacher, respectively. However, due to the farthest point sampling in most point cloud models, the intermediate features between teacher and student are misaligned, deteriorating the feature distillation performance. To eliminate it, we propose a feature mover's distance (FMD) loss based on optimal transportation, which can measure the distance between unordered point cloud features effectively. The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) has paved the way for complex tasks such as role-playing, which enhances user interactions by enabling models to imitate various characters. However, the closed-source nature of state-of-the-art LLMs and their general-purpose training limit role-playing optimization. In this paper, we introduce RoleLLM, a framework to benchmark, elicit, and enhance role-playing abilities in LLMs. RoleLLM comprises four stages: (1) Role Profile Construction for 100 roles; (2) Context-Based Instruction Generation (Context-Instruct) for role-specific knowledge extraction; (3) Role Prompting using GPT (RoleGPT) for speaking style imitation; and (4) Role-Conditioned Instruction Tuning (RoCIT) for fine-tuning open-source models along with role customization. By Context-Instruct and RoleGPT, we create RoleBench, the first systematic and fine-grained character-level benchmark dataset for role-playing with 168,093 samples. Due to its importance and widespread use in industry, automated testing of REST APIs has attracted major interest from the research community in the last few years. However, most of the work in the literature has been focused on black-box fuzzing. Although existing fuzzers have been used to automatically find many faults in existing APIs, there are still several open research challenges that hinder the achievement of better results (e.g., in terms of code coverage and fault finding). For example, under-specified schemas are a major issue for black-box fuzzers. Currently, EvoMaster is the only existing tool that supports white-box fuzzing of REST APIs. In this paper, we provide a series of novel white-box heuristics, including for example how to deal with under-specified constrains in API schemas, as well as under-specified schemas in SQL databases. Our novel techniques are implemented as an extension to our open-source, search-based fuzzer EvoMaster. An empirical study on 14 APIs from the EMB corpus, plus one industrial API, shows clear improvements of the results in some of these APIs.

Weakly-supervised temporal action localization (WTAL) is a practical yet challenging task. Due to large-scale datasets, most existing methods use a network pretrained in other datasets to extract features, which are not suitable enough for WTAL. To address this problem, researchers design several modules for feature enhancement, which improve the performance of the localization module, especially modeling the temporal relationship between snippets. However, all of them neglect the adverse effects of ambiguous information, which would reduce the discriminability of others. Considering this phenomenon, we propose Discriminability-Driven Graph Network (DDG-Net), which explicitly models ambiguous snippets and discriminative snippets with well-designed connections, preventing the transmission of ambiguous information and enhancing the discriminability of snippet-level representations. Additionally, we propose feature consistency loss to prevent the assimilation of features and drive the graph convolution network to generate more discriminative representations. Extensive experiments on THUMOS14 and ActivityNet1.2 benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of DDG-Net, establishing new state-of-the-art results on both datasets. Quantum correlations, both spatial and temporal, are the central pillars of quantum mechanics. Over the last two decades, a big breakthrough in quantum physics is its complex extension to the non-Hermitian realm, and dizzying varieties of novel phenomena and applications beyond the Hermitian framework have been uncovered. However, unique features of non-Hermitian quantum correlations, especially in the time domain, still remain to be explored. Here, for the first time, we experimentally achieve this goal by using a parity-time (PT )-symmetric trapped-ion system. The upper limit of temporal quantum correlations, known as the algebraic bound, which has so far not been achieved in the standard measurement scenario, is reached here by approaching the exceptional point (EP), thus showing the unexpected ability of EPs in tuning temporal quantum correlation effects. Our study, unveiling the fundamental interplay of non-Hermiticity, nonlinearity, and temporal quantum correlations, provides the first step towards exploring and utilizing various non-Hermitian temporal quantum effects by operating a wide range of EP devices, which are important for both fundamental studies and applications of quantum EP systems., Comment: 4 figures and 8 pages

In industry, RESTful APIs are widely used to build modern Cloud Applications. Testing them is challenging, because not only they rely on network communications, but also they deal with external services like databases. Therefore, there has been a large amount of research sprout in recent years on how to automatically verify this kind of web services. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art on testing RESTful APIs, based on an analysis of 92 scientific articles. This review categories and summarizes the existing scientific work on this topic, and discusses the current challenges in the verification of RESTful APIs.

The Graph Query Language (GraphQL) is a powerful language for APIs manipulation in web services. It has been recently introduced as an alternative solution for addressing the limitations of RESTful APIs. This paper introduces an automated solution for GraphQL APIs testing. We present a full framework for automated APIs testing, from the schema extraction to test case generation. In addition, we consider two kinds of testing: white-box and black-box testing. The white-box testing is performed when the source code of the GraphQL API is available. Our approach is based on evolutionary search. Test cases are evolved to intelligently explore the solution space while maximizing code coverage and fault-finding criteria. The black-box testing does not require access to the source code of the GraphQL API. It is therefore of more general applicability, albeit it has worse performance. In this context, we use a random search to generate GraphQL data. The proposed framework is implemented and integrated into the open-source EvoMaster tool. With enabled white-box heuristics, i.e., white-box mode, experiments on 7 open-source GraphQL APIs show statistically significant improvement of the evolutionary approach compared to the baseline random search. In addition, experiments on 31 online GraphQL APIs reveal the ability of the black-box mode to detect real faults.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is a communication protocol to support client-server interactions among services over a network. RPC is widely applied in industry for building large-scale distributed systems, such as Microservices. Modern RPC frameworks include for example Thrift, gRPC, SOFARPC and Dubbo. Testing such systems is very challenging, due to the complexity of distributed systems and various RPC frameworks the system could employ. To the best of our knowledge, there does not exist any tool or solution that could enable automated testing of modern RPC-based services. To fill this gap, in this paper we propose the first approach in the literature, together with an open-source tool, for white-box fuzzing modern RPC-based APIs with search. To assess our novel approach, we conducted an empirical study with two artificial and four industrial APIs selected by our industrial partner. The tool has been integrated into a real industrial pipeline, and could be applied to real industrial development process for fuzzing RPC-based APIs. To further demonstrate its effectiveness and application in industrial settings, we also report results of employing our tool for fuzzing another 50 industrial APIs autonomously conducted by our industrial partner in their testing processes. Results show that our novel approach is capable of enabling automated test case generation for industrial RPC-based APIs (i.e., two artificial and 54 industrial). We also compared with a simple grey-box technique and existing manually written tests. Our white-box solution achieves significant improvements on code coverage. Regarding fault detection, by conducting a careful review with our industrial partner of the tests generated by our novel approach in the selected four industrial APIs, a total of 41 real faults were identified, which have now been fixed. Another 8,377 detected faults are currently under investigation.

With several microservice architectures comprising of thousands of web services, used to serve 630 million customers, companies like Meituan face several challenges in the verification and validation of their software. This paper reports on our experience of integrating EvoMaster (a search-based white-box fuzzer) in the testing processes at Meituan over almost 2 years. Two user studies were carried out in 2021 and in 2023 to evaluate two versions of EvoMaster, respectively, in tackling the test generation for industrial web services which are parts of a large e-commerce microservice system. The two user studies involve in total 321,131 lines of code from five APIs and 27 industrial participants at Meituan. Questionnaires and interviews were carried out in both user studies with employees at Meituan. The two user studies demonstrate clear advantages of EvoMaster (i.e., code coverage and fault detection) and the urgent need to have such a fuzzer in industrial microservices testing. To study how these results could generalize, a follow up user study was done in 2024 with five engineers in the five different companies. Our results show that, besides their clear usefulness, there are still many critical challenges that the research community needs to investigate to improve performance further.

RESTful APIs are a type of web services that are widely used in industry. In the last few years, a lot of effort in the research community has been spent in designing novel techniques to automatically fuzz those APIs to find faults in them. Many real faults were automatically found in a large variety of RESTful APIs. However, usually the analyzed fuzzers treat the APIs as black-box, and no analysis of what is actually covered in these systems is done. Therefore, although these fuzzers are clearly useful for practitioners, we do not know what are their current limitations and actual effectiveness. Solving this is a necessary step to be able to design better, more efficient and effective techniques. To address this issue, in this paper we compare seven state-of-the-art fuzzers on 18 open-source and one industrial RESTful APIs. We then analyzed the source code of which parts of these APIs the fuzzers fail to generate tests for. This analysis points to clear limitations of these current fuzzers, listing concrete challenges for the research community to follow up on.

The mature soybean plants are of complex architecture with pods frequently touching each other, posing a challenge for in-situ segmentation of on-branch soybean pods. Deep learning-based methods can achieve accurate training and strong generalization capabilities, but it demands massive labeled data, which is often a limitation, especially for agricultural applications. As lacking the labeled data to train an in-situ segmentation model for on-branch soybean pods, we propose a transfer learning from synthetic in-vitro soybean pods. First, we present a novel automated image generation method to rapidly generate a synthetic in-vitro soybean pods dataset with plenty of annotated samples. The in-vitro soybean pods samples are overlapped to simulate the frequently physically touching of on-branch soybean pods. Then, we design a two-step transfer learning. In the first step, we finetune an instance segmentation network pretrained by a source domain (MS COCO dataset) with a synthetic target domain (in-vitro soybean pods dataset). In the second step, transferring from simulation to reality is performed by finetuning on a few real-world mature soybean plant samples. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed two-step transfer learning method, such that AP$_{50}$ was 0.80 for the real-world mature soybean plant test dataset, which is higher than that of direct adaptation and its AP$_{50}$ was 0.77. We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a parallel-electromagnetically-induced transparency (parallel-EIT) cooling technique for ion crystals in the Paul trap. It has less stringent requirements on the cooling resonance condition than the standard electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) cooling, thus allowing, in principle, to simultaneously cool the motional mode spectrum with an arbitrary range. A proof-of-principle validation for this cooling scheme is experimentally demonstrated with up to 4 trapped 40Ca+ ions. We observe simultaneous near-ground-state cooling for all motional modes with best average phonon number about 0.2. By tuning the trap frequency in a large range to imitate a broadband motional mode spectrum, we can still reach almost the same cooling limit for all the modes while standard EIT cooling shows limited cooling range. Our method has a simple experimental configuration, requiring only appropriate modulation of the probe beam of standard EIT cooling, and can be applied to various types of ions (e.g., 171Yb+, 40Ca+). Contrastive learning has shown impressive success in enhancing feature discriminability for various visual tasks in a self-supervised manner, but the standard contrastive paradigm (features+$\ell_{2}$ normalization) has limited benefits when applied in domain adaptation. We find that this is mainly because the class weights (weights of the final fully connected layer) are ignored in the domain adaptation optimization process, which makes it difficult for features to cluster around the corresponding class weights. To solve this problem, we propose the \emph{simple but powerful} Probabilistic Contrastive Learning (PCL), which moves beyond the standard paradigm by removing $\ell_{2}$ normalization and replacing the features with probabilities. PCL can guide the probability distribution towards a one-hot configuration, thus minimizing the discrepancy between features and class weights. We conduct extensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of PCL and observe consistent performance gains on five tasks, i.e., Unsupervised/Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptation (UDA/SSDA), Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL), UDA Detection and Semantic Segmentation. Notably, for UDA Semantic Segmentation on SYNTHIA, PCL surpasses the sophisticated CPSL-D by $>\!2\%$ in terms of mean IoU with a much lower training cost (PCL: 1*3090, 5 days v.s. Symmetry, including the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetry, is a striking topic, widely discussed and employed in many fields. It is well-known that quantum measurement can destroy or disturb quantum systems. However, can and how does quantum measurement destroy the symmetry of the measured system? To answer the pertinent question, we establish the correlation between the quantum measurement and Floquet $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and investigate for the first time how the measurement frequency and measurement strength affect the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry of the measured system using the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ ion. It is already shown that the measurement at high frequencies would break the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. Notably, even for an inadequately fast measurement frequency, if the measurement strength is sufficiently strong, the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking can occur. The current work can enhance our knowledge of quantum measurement and symmetry and may inspire further research on the effect of quantum measurement on symmetry.

Parity-time($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric systems, featuring real eigenvalues despite its non-Hermitian nature, have been widely utilized to achieve exotic functionalities in the classical realm, such as loss-induced transparency or lasing revival. By approaching the exceptional point (EP) or the coalescences of both eigenvalues and eigenstates, unconventional effects are also expected to emerge in pure quantum $\mathcal{PT}$ devices. Here, we report experimental evidences of spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking in a single cold $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ ion, and more importantly, a counterintuitive effect of perfect quantum coherence occurring at the EP. Excellent agreement between experimental results and theoretical predictions is identified. In view of the versatile role of cold ions in building quantum memory or processor, our experiment provides a new platform to explore and utilize pure quantum EP effects, with diverse applications in quantum engineering of trapped ions.

In this paper, we introduce the design of electrostatic septum (ESS) for the accelerator of Shanghai Advanced Proton Therapy (SAPT), and discuss its mechanical structure and the material selection of the electrode. The beam loss on the septum is studied, and the calculation results are given by the particle simulation and by the formula which is related to the placement angle and the divergence angle in the horizontal direction. Considering the thermal effect of the beam loss on the head of the septum, the equilibrium temperature at work is calculated. In addition, the distribution of the electric field and the trajectory of the particles are also simulated. The phenomenon of vacuum discharge in the working ESS is analyzed in detail on the relationship between the working current and the enhancement factor of the electric field on the electrode surface. Based on the discharge mechanism, the importance of degassing and cleaning of ESS is analyzed. We also analyzed the effect of external series resistance from circuit and discharge mechanism. It is considered that series resistance within a certain range can increase the breakdown voltage between vacuum electrodes and reduce the irreversible damage to the surface of the electrode system caused by the discharge process. Big data features not only large volumes of data but also data with complicated structures. Complexity imposes unique challenges in big data analytics. Meeker and Hong (2014, Quality Engineering, pp. 102-116) provided an extensive discussion of the opportunities and challenges in big data and reliability, and described engineering systems that can generate big data that can be used in reliability analysis. Meeker and Hong (2014) focused on large scale system operating and environment data (i.e., high-frequency multivariate time series data), and provided examples on how to link such data as covariates to traditional reliability responses such as time to failure, time to recurrence of events, and degradation measurements. This paper intends to extend that discussion by focusing on how to use data with complicated structures to do reliability analysis. Such data types include high-dimensional sensor data, functional curve data, and image streams. We first provide a review of recent development in those directions, and then we provide a discussion on how analytical methods can be developed to tackle the challenging aspects that arise from the complexity feature of big data in reliability applications. The use of modern statistical methods such as variable selection, functional data analysis, scalar-on-image regression, spatio-temporal data models, and machine learning techniques will also be discussed., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures

The gap between sensing patterns of different face modalities remains a challenging problem in heterogeneous face recognition (HFR). This paper proposes an adversarial discriminative feature learning framework to close the sensing gap via adversarial learning on both raw-pixel space and compact feature space. This framework integrates cross-spectral face hallucination and discriminative feature learning into an end-to-end adversarial network. In the pixel space, we make use of generative adversarial networks to perform cross-spectral face hallucination. An elaborate two-path model is introduced to alleviate the lack of paired images, which gives consideration to both global structures and local textures. In the feature space, an adversarial loss and a high-order variance discrepancy loss are employed to measure the global and local discrepancy between two heterogeneous distributions respectively. These two losses enhance domain-invariant feature learning and modality independent noise removing. Experimental results on three NIR-VIS databases show that our proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art HFR methods, without requiring of complex network or large-scale training dataset.

The Poisson-binomial distribution is useful in many applied problems in engineering, actuarial science, and data mining. The Poisson-binomial distribution models the distribution of the sum of independent but not identically distributed Bernoulli random variables whose success probabilities vary. In this paper, we extend the Poisson-binomial distribution to the generalized Poisson-binomial (GPB) distribution. The GPB distribution is defined in cases where the Bernoulli variables can take any two arbitrary values instead of 0 and~1. The GPB distribution is useful in many areas such as voting theory, actuarial science, warranty prediction, and probability theory. With few previous works studying the GPB distribution, we derive the probability distribution via the discrete Fourier transform of the characteristic function of the distribution. We develop an efficient algorithm for computing the distribution function, which uses the fast Fourier transform. We test the accuracy of the developed algorithm upon comparing it with enumeration-based exact method and the results from the binomial distribution. We also study the computational time of the algorithm in various parameter settings. Finally, we discus the factors affecting the computational efficiency of this algorithm, and illustrate the use of the software package., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

In multimedia applications, the text and image components in a web document form a pairwise constraint that potentially indicates the same semantic concept. This paper studies cross-modal learning via the pairwise constraint, and aims to find the common structure hidden in different modalities. We first propose a compound regularization framework to deal with the pairwise constraint, which can be used as a general platform for developing cross-modal algorithms. For unsupervised learning, we propose a cross-modal subspace clustering method to learn a common structure for different modalities. For supervised learning, to reduce the semantic gap and the outliers in pairwise constraints, we propose a cross-modal matching method based on compound ?21 regularization along with an iteratively reweighted algorithm to find the global optimum. Extensive experiments demonstrate the benefits of joint text and image modeling with semantically induced pairwise constraints, and show that the proposed cross-modal methods can further reduce the semantic gap between different modalities and improve the clustering/retrieval accuracy., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 70 references

The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) contains a 3.5-GeV storage ring serving as a national X-ray synchrotron radiation user facility characterized by a low emittance and a low coupling. The stability and quality of the electron beams are monitored continuously by an array of diagnostics. In particular, an X-ray pinhole camera is employed in the diagnostics beamline of the ring to characterize the position, size, and emittance of the beam. The performance of the measurement of the transverse electron beam size is given by the width of the point spread function (PSF) of the X-ray pinhole camera. Typically the point spread function of the X-ray pinhole camera is calculated via analytical or numerical method. In this paper we will introduce a new beam based calibration method to derive the width of the PSF online.
