Frame-level micro- and macro-expression spotting methods require time-consuming frame-by-frame observation during annotation. Meanwhile, video-level spotting lacks sufficient information about the location and number of expressions during training, resulting in significantly inferior performance compared with fully-supervised spotting. To bridge this gap, we propose a point-level weakly-supervised expression spotting (PWES) framework, where each expression requires to be annotated with only one random frame (i.e., a point). To mitigate the issue of sparse label distribution, the prevailing solution is pseudo-label mining, which, however, introduces new problems: localizing contextual background snippets results in inaccurate boundaries and discarding foreground snippets leads to fragmentary predictions. Therefore, we design the strategies of multi-refined pseudo label generation (MPLG) and distribution-guided feature contrastive learning (DFCL) to address these problems. Specifically, MPLG generates more reliable pseudo labels by merging class-specific probabilities, attention scores, fused features, and point-level labels. DFCL is utilized to enhance feature similarity for the same categories and feature variability for different categories while capturing global representations across the entire datasets. Extensive experiments on the CAS(ME)^2, CAS(ME)^3, and SAMM-LV datasets demonstrate PWES achieves promising performance comparable to that of recent fully-supervised methods.

The standard model of modern cosmology might be cracked by the recent persistent hot debate on the Hubble-constant ($H_0$) tension, which manifests itself as the sound-horizon ($r_s$) tension or absolute-magnitude ($M_B$) tension if deeming the origin of the Hubble tension from modifying the early or late Universe, respectively. In this Letter, we achieve a fully model-independent constraint (fitting a model-independent global parameterization to a model-independent inverse distant ladder with a model-independent high-redshift calibration) on late-time models with strong evidence against homogeneous new physics over the $\Lambda$-cold-dark ($\Lambda$CDM) model. Further using this model-independent constraint to calibrate sufficiently local supernovae with corresponding late-time models extrapolated below the homogeneity scale, we find surprisingly that, although both $H_0$ tension and $M_B$ tension are absent in our local Universe, a combination of $H_0$ and $M_B$ as the intercept $a_B$ of the magnitude-redshift relation exhibits $3\sim 7\sigma$ tension even for the $\Lambda$CDM model. Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) play a crucial role in numerous applications within quantum information science, such as quantum state tomography, error correction, entanglement detection, and quantum cryptography. Utilizing \(2^n + 1\) MUB circuits provides a minimal and optimal measurement strategy for reconstructing all \(n\)-qubit unknown states. It significantly reduces the number of measurements compared to the traditional \(4^n\) Pauli observables, also enhancing the robustness of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Previous circuit designs that rely on a single generator can result in exponential gate costs for some MUB circuits. In this work, we present an efficient algorithm to generate each of the \(2^n + 1\) quantum MUB circuits on \(n\)-qubit systems within \(O(n^3)\) time. The algorithm features a three-stage structure, and we have calculated the average number of different gates for random sampling. Additionally, we have identified two linear properties: the entanglement part can be directly defined into \(2n - 3\) fixed sub-parts, and the knowledge of \(n\) special MUB circuits is sufficient to construct all \(2^n + 1\) MUB circuits. This new efficient and simple circuit construction paves the way for the implementation of a complete set of MUBs in diverse quantum information processing tasks on high-dimensional quantum systems.

The pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations have recently suggested the presence of a gravitational wave background at nano-Hertz frequencies. In this paper, we explore potential inflationary interpretation of this signal within the context of a simple and health parity-violating gravity model termed the Nieh-Yan modified Teleparallel Gravity. Through this model, two inflationary scenarios are evaluated, both yielding significant polarized primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) that align well with the results from PTA observations. Furthermore, the resulting PGWs can display strong circular polarization and significant anisotropies in the PTA frequency band, which are distinct features to be verified by observations of both PTA and the cosmic microwave background.The detection of such a distinctive background of PGWs is expected to provide strong evidence supporting our scenarios and insights into inflationary dynamics and gravity theory., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Most micro- and macro-expression spotting methods in untrimmed videos suffer from the burden of video-wise collection and frame-wise annotation. Weakly-supervised expression spotting (WES) based on video-level labels can potentially mitigate the complexity of frame-level annotation while achieving fine-grained frame-level spotting. However, we argue that existing weakly-supervised methods are based on multiple instance learning (MIL) involving inter-modality, inter-sample, and inter-task gaps. The inter-sample gap is primarily from the sample distribution and duration. Therefore, we propose a novel and simple WES framework, MC-WES, using multi-consistency collaborative mechanisms that include modal-level saliency, video-level distribution, label-level duration and segment-level feature consistency strategies to implement fine frame-level spotting with only video-level labels to alleviate the above gaps and merge prior knowledge. The modal-level saliency consistency strategy focuses on capturing key correlations between raw images and optical flow. The video-level distribution consistency strategy utilizes the difference of sparsity in temporal distribution. The label-level duration consistency strategy exploits the difference in the duration of facial muscles. The segment-level feature consistency strategy emphasizes that features under the same labels maintain similarity. Experimental results on three challenging datasets -- CAS(ME)$^2$, CAS(ME)$^3$, and SAMM-LV -- demonstrate that MC-WES is comparable to state-of-the-art fully-supervised methods.

The current LIGO-Virgo observing run has been pushing the sensitivity limit to touch the stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds (SGWBs). However, no significant detection has been reported to date for any single dominated source of SGWBs with a single broken-power-law (BPL) spectrum. Nevertheless, it could equally well escape from existing Bayesian searches from, for example, two comparable dominated sources with two separate BPL spectra (double-peak case) or a single source with its power-law behavior in the spectrum broken twice (doubly broken case). In this paper, we put constraints on these two cases but specifically for the model with cosmological first-order phase transitions from Advanced LIGO-Virgo's first three observing runs. We found strong negative evidence for the double-peak case and hence place 95\% C.L. upper limits $\Omega_\mathrm{BPL,1}<5.8\times10^{-8}$ and $\Omega_\mathrm{BPL,2}<4.4\times10^{-8}$ on the two BPL spectra amplitudes with respect to the unresolved compact binary coalescence (CBC) amplitude $\Omega_\mathrm{CBC}<5.6\times10^{-9}$. We further found weak negative evidence for the doubly broken case and hence place 95\% C.L. upper limit $\Omega_\mathrm{DB}<1.2\times10^{-7}$ on the overall amplitude of the doubly broken spectrum with respect to $\Omega_\mathrm{CBC}<6.0\times10^{-9}$. The sample variance due to our local density fluctuations in measuring our local Hubble-constant ($H_0$) can be reduced to the percentage level by choosing the Hubble-flow type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) outside of the homogeneity scale. In this Letter, we have revealed a hidden trend in this one-percent $H_0$ variation both theoretically and observationally. We have derived for the first time our $H_0$ variation measured from any discrete sample of distant SNe Ia. We have also identified a residual linear correlation between our local $H_0$ fitted from different groups of SNe Ia and their ambient density contrasts of SN-host galaxies evaluated at a given scale. We have further traced the scale dependence of this residual linear trend, which becomes more and more positively correlated with the ambient density contrasts of SN-host galaxies estimated at larger and larger scales, on the contrary to but still marginally consistent with the theoretical expectation from the $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter model. The Hubble tension seems to be a crisis with $\sim5\sigma$ discrepancy between the most recent local distance ladder measurement from type Ia supernovae calibrated by Cepheids and the global fitting constraint from the cosmic microwave background data. To narrow down the possible late-time solutions to the Hubble tension, we have used in a recent study [Phys. Rev. D 105, L021301 (2022)] an improved inverse distance ladder method calibrated by the absolute measurements of the Hubble expansion rate at high redshifts from the cosmic chronometer data, and found no appealing evidence for new physics at the late time beyond the $\Lambda$CDM model characterized by a parametrization based on the cosmic age. In this paper, we further investigate the perspective of this improved inverse distance ladder method by including the late-time matter perturbation growth data. We study the inflationary implications of a novel parity-violating gravity model, which modifies the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity by introducing the Nieh-Yan term coupled to an axion-like field. The parity-violating Nieh-Yan term results in the velocity birefringence of gravitational waves (GWs) and triggers the tachyonic instability only for one of the two circular polarization states. We consider that the inflaton is identified as the coupled axion-like field with a wiggly potential characterized by steep cliffs connected by smooth plateaus. During inflation, the temporary fast roll of axion on the cliff-like region leads to the significant enhancement of the tensor perturbations in one polarization state with the wave numbers that exit the horizon around this period. In this setup, the resulting energy spectrum for GWs presents a sizable localized bump involving the contribution of only one polarization state. This chiral GW background is detectable by LISA and Taiji, and its chirality can be determined by correlating two detectors, which provide an opportunity to probe the inflation and test the gravity model., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, through thinking on the modularity function that measures the standard of community division, a new algorithm for dividing communities is proposed, called the Connect Intensity Iteration algorithm, or CIIA for short. In this algorithm, a new indicator is proposed.This indicator is the difference between the actual number of edges between two nodes and the number of edges when the edges are randomly placed. It can reflect more information between the nodes. The larger the value of this index, the greater the possibility that the two nodes are divided into the same community, and vice versa. The Hubble tension, if not caused by any systematics, could be relieved or even resolved from modifying either the early-time or late-time Universe. The early-time modifications are usually in tension with either galaxy clustering or galaxy lensing constraints. The late-time modifications are also in conflict with the constraint from the inverse distance ladder, which, however, is weakened by the dependence on a sound-horizon prior and some particular approximation for the late-time expansion history. To achieve a more general no-go argument for the late-time scenarios, we propose to use a global parametrizationbased on the cosmic age (PAge) to consistently use the cosmic chronometers data beyond the Taylor expansion domain and without the input of a sound-horizon prior. The requirement of high spectrum efficiency puts forward higher requirements on frame synchronization (FS) in wireless communication systems. Meanwhile, a large number of nonlinear devices or blocks will inevitably cause nonlinear distortion. To avoid the occupation of bandwidth resources and overcome the difficulty of nonlinear distortion, an extreme learning machine (ELM)-based network is introduced into the superimposed training-based FS with nonlinear distortion. Firstly, a preprocessing procedure is utilized to reap the features of synchronization metric (SM). Then, based on the rough features of SM, an ELM network is constructed to estimate the offset of frame boundary. The analysis and experiment results show that, compared with existing methods, the proposed method can improve the error probability of FS and bit error rate (BER) of symbol detection (SD). Values of the Hubble constant between the direct measurements from various independent local observations and that inferred from the cosmic microwave background with the $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter model are in tension with persistent significance. We propose a late-time inhomogeneous resolution suggesting that a chameleon field coupled to a local overdensity of matter could be trapped at a higher potential energy density as an effective cosmological constant driving the local expansion rate faster than that of the background with lower matter density. We illustrate this mechanism in a toy model in which a region with only $20\%$ overdensity of matter is sufficient to resolve the Hubble tension, and the Hubble constant measured by the local distance ladders could be accommodated by the chameleon coupled to the observed overdensities from the large-scale structure surveys., Comment: v4, to match the published version in Physical Review D as a Letter

The increasing tension between the different local direct measurements of the Hubble expansion rate and that inferred from the Cosmic Microwave Background observation by $\Lambda$-Cold-Dark-Matter model could be a smoking gun of new physics, if not caused by either observational systematics or local bias. We generalize previous investigation on the local bias from a local void by globally fitting the Pantheon sample over all parameters in the radial profile function of a local void described by an inhomogeneous but isotropic Lema\^{i}tre-Tolman-Bondi metric with a cosmological constant. In burst-mode communication systems, the quality of frame synchronization (FS) at receivers significantly impacts the overall system performance. To guarantee FS, an extreme learning machine (ELM)-based synchronization method is proposed to overcome the nonlinear distortion caused by nonlinear devices or blocks. In the proposed method, a preprocessing is first performed to capture the coarse features of synchronization metric (SM) by using empirical knowledge. Then, an ELM-based FS network is employed to reduce system's nonlinear distortion and improve SMs. Experimental results indicate that, compared with existing methods, our approach could significantly reduce the error probability of FS while improve the performance in terms of robustness and generalization., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures

In this paper, a likelihood based evidence acquisition approach is proposed to acquire evidence from experts'assessments as recorded in historical datasets. Then a data-driven evidential reasoning rule based model is introduced to R&D project selection process by combining multiple pieces of evidence with different weights and reliabilities. As a result, the total belief degrees and the overall performance can be generated for ranking and selecting projects. Finally, a case study on the R&D project selection for the National Science Foundation of China is conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed model. The data-driven evidential reasoning rule based model for project evaluation and selection (1) utilizes experimental data to represent experts' assessments by using belief distributions over the set of final funding outcomes, and through this historic statistics it helps experts and applicants to understand the funding probability to a given assessment grade, (2) implies the mapping relationships between the evaluation grades and the final funding outcomes by using historical data, and (3) provides a way to make fair decisions by taking experts' reliabilities into account. In the data-driven evidential reasoning rule based model, experts play different roles in accordance with their reliabilities which are determined by their previous review track records, and the selection process is made interpretable and fairer. The newly proposed model reduces the time-consuming panel review work for both managers and experts, and significantly improves the efficiency and quality of project selection process. An automatic clock synchronizing method implemented in field programmable gate array (FPGA) is proposed in this paper. It is developed for the clock system which will be applied in the end-cap time of flight (ETOF) upgrade of the Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII). In this design, an FPGA is used to automatically monitor the synchronization circuit and deal with signals coming from external clock synchronization circuit. By testing different delay time of the detection signal and analyzing state signals returned, the synchronization windows will be found automatically in FPGA. The new clock system not only retains low clock jitter which is less than 20ps root mean square (RMS), but also demonstrates automatic synchronization to the beam bunches. So far, the clock auto-synchronizing function has been working successfully under a series of tests. Aerosol-cloud interactions have a potentially large impact on climate, but are poorly quantified and thus contribute a significant and long-standing uncertainty in climate projections. The impacts derived from climate models are poorly constrained by observations, because retrieving robust large-scale signals of aerosol-cloud interactions are frequently hampered by the considerable noise associated with meteorological co-variability. The Iceland-Holuhraun effusive eruption in 2014 resulted in a massive aerosol plume in an otherwise near-pristine environment and thus provided an ideal natural experiment to quantify cloud responses to aerosol perturbations. Here we disentangle significant signals from the noise of meteorological co-variability using a satellite-based machine-learning approach. Our analysis shows that aerosols from the eruption increased cloud cover by approximately 10%, and this appears to be the leading cause of climate forcing, rather than cloud brightening as previously thought. We find that volcanic aerosols do brighten clouds by reducing droplet size, but this has a significantly smaller radiative impact than changes in cloud fraction. These results add substantial observational constraints on the cooling impact of aerosols. Such constraints are critical for improving climate models, which still inadequately represent the complex macro-physical and micro-physical impacts of aerosol-cloud interactions.

A calibration method aimed for the differential nonlinearity (DNL) error of the Low Energy X-ray Instrument (LE) onboard the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is presented, which is independent with electronic systems used as testing platform and is only determined by the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) itself. Exploring this method, ADCs that are used within the flight model phase of HXMT-LE can be calibrated individually and independently by a non-destructive and low-cost way, greatly alleviating the complexity of the problem. As a result, the performance of the energy spectrum can be significantly improved, further more, noise reduced and resolution enhanced.

We benchmark and analyze the error of energy conservation (EC) scheme for Particle in cell/Monte-Carlo Couple (PIC/MCC) algorithms by a radio frequency discharging simulation. The plasma heating behaviors and electron distributing functions obtained by 1D simulation are analyzed. Both explicit and implicit algorithms are checked. The results showed that the EC scheme can eliminated the self-heating with wide grid spacing in both cases with a small reduction of the accuracies. In typical parameters, the EC implicit scheme has higher precision than EC explicit scheme. Some "numerical cooling" behaviors are observed and analyzed. Some other error are analyzed also. The analysis showed EC implicit scheme can be used to qualitative estimation of some discharge problems with much less computational resource costs without much loss of accuracies., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

A readout electronics used in space cosmic-ray charges measurement for multi-channel silicon detector and its performance test results are introduced in this paper. A 64-channel charge sensitive ASIC (VA140) from IDEAS company is adopt in this method. With its features of low power consumption, low noise, large dynamic range and high integration, it can be used in future particle detecting experiments base on silicon detector.

The prototype of time digitizing system for the upgrade of BESIII endcap TOF (ETOF) is introduced in this paper. The ETOF readout electronics has a formation of distributed architecture that hit signal from multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) is signaled as LVDS by front-end electronics (FEE) and sent to the back-end time digitizing system via long shield differential twisted pair cables. The ETOF digitizing system consists of 2 VME crates each of which contains modules of time digitizing, clock, trigger and fast control etc. The time digitizing module (TDIG) of this prototype can support up to 72 electrical channels of hit information measurement. The fast control (FCTL) module can operate at barrel or endcap mode. The barrel FCTL fans fast control signals from the trigger system out to endcap FCTLs, merges data from endcaps and transfers to the trigger system. Without modifying the barrel TOF structure, this time digitizing architecture benefits for improving ETOF performance without degrading barrel TOF measuring. Lab experiments show that the time resolution of this digitizing system can be less than 20ps, and the data throughput to DAQ can be about 92Mbps. Beam experiments show that the complete time resolution can be less than 45ps.

Pakistan ranks third in the world in terms of mortality attributable to air pollution, with aerosol mass concentrations (PM2.5) consistently well above WHO (World Health Organization) air quality guidelines (AQG). However, regulation is dependent on a sparse network of air quality monitoring stations and insufficient ground data. This study utilizes long-term observations of aerosols and trace gases to characterize and rank the air pollution scenarios and pollution characteristics of 80 selected cities in Pakistan. Datasets used include (1) the Aqua and Terra (AquaTerra) MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Level 2 Collection 6.1 merged Dark Target and Deep Blue (DTB) aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval products; (2) the CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) reanalysis PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 data; (3) the MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2) reanalysis PM2.5 data, (4) the OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) tropospheric vertical column density (TVCD) of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and VCD of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), (5) the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) Nighttime Lights data, (6) MODIS Collection 6 Version 2 global monthly fire location data (MCD14ML), (7) population density, (8) MODIS Level 3 Collection 6 land cover types, (9) AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) Version 3 Level 2.0 data, and (10) ground-based PM2.5 concentrations from air quality monitoring stations. Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) analyses were performed by integrating with ground-based PM2.5 concentrations and the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) air parcel back trajectories to identify potential pollution source areas which are responsible for extreme air pollution in Pakistan. Results show that the ranking of the top polluted cities depends on the type of pollutant considered and the metric used. For example, Jhang, Multan, and Vehari were characterized as the top three polluted cities in Pakistan when considering AquaTerra DTB AOD products; for PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 Lahore, Gujranwala, and Okara were the top three; for tropospheric NO2 VCD Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad and for PBL SO2 VCD Lahore, Mirpur, and Gujranwala. The results demonstrate that Pakistan’s entire population has been exposed to high PM2.5 concentrations for many years, with a mean annual value of 54.7 μg/cu. m, over all Pakistan from 2003 to 2020. This value exceeds Pakistan’s National Environmental Quality Standards (Pak-NEQS, i.e., <15 μg/cu. m annual mean) for ambient air defined by the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) as well as the WHO Interim Target-1 (i.e., mean annual PM2.5 <35 μg/cu. m). The spatial analyses of the concentrations of aerosols and trace gases in terms of population density, nighttime lights, land cover types, and fire location data, and the PSCF analysis indicate that Pakistan’s air quality is strongly affected by anthropogenic sources inside of Pakistan, with contributions from surrounding countries. Statistically significant positive (increasing) trends in PM1, PM2.5, PM10, tropospheric NO2 VCD, and SO2 VCD were observed in ~89%, ~67%, ~48%, 91%, and ~88% of the Pakistani cities (80 cities), respectively. This comprehensive analysis of aerosol and trace gas levels, their characteristics in spatio-temporal domains, and their trends over Pakistan, is the first of its kind. Results will be helpful to the Ministry of Climate Change (Government of Pakistan), Pak-EPA, SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), policymakers, and the local research community to mitigate air pollution and its effects on human health.

The observation and measurement of precipitation across a range of temporal and spatial scales is of great importance for many user requirements and applications. Precipitation is a key component of the global energy and water cycle moving water, and its’ associated energy, through the Earth system at relatively fine spatial and temporal scales. At the societal level, precipitation provides fresh water and moderates our climate, but can also be destructive through storms, droughts and spreading diseases. Monitoring and measuring the distribution and quantities of precipitation, across the Earth’s surface is therefore crucial to physical and social applications, together with changes in precipitation over time. While conventional surface instruments provide a reasonably long record, these tend to be confined to well populated land surface areas: most ocean regions and sparsely populated regions have few measurements. Satellite-based precipitation products can provide global measurements, although the timespan of such products is limited and the data record is comprised of different instruments that operate over different periods of record. The challenge of any climate record is to provide a consistent product over the full period of record. Many satellite precipitation products incorporate ancillary data, such as surface gauge data or model data, which may limit their utility in the validation or verification of other climate data records. This chapter provides a review of the importance of precipitation to the climate system, the basis of satellite precipitation retrievals, climate data records of satellite data for precipitation retrievals and the development of fundamental precipitation data records for climate applications.

This study focuses on the ability of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) passive microwave sensors to detect and provide quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE) for extreme lake-effect snowfall events over the United States lower Great Lakes region. GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) high frequency channels can clearly detect intense shallow convective snowfall events. However, GMI Goddard PROfiling (GPROF) QPE retrievals produce inconsistent results when compared against the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) ground-based radar reference dataset. While GPROF retrievals adequately capture intense snowfall rates and spatial patterns of one event, GPROF systematically underestimates intense snowfall rates in another event. Furthermore, GPROF produces abundant light snowfall rates that do not conform with MRMS observations. Ad-hoc precipitation rate thresholds are suggested to partially mitigate GPROF’s overproduction of light snowfall rates. The sensitivity and retrieval efficiency of GPROF to key parameters (2-meter temperature, total precipitable water, and background surface type) used to constrain the GPROF a-priori retrieval database are investigated. Results demonstrate that typical lake-effect snow environmental and surface conditions, especially coastal surfaces, are underpopulated in the database and adversely affect GPROF retrievals. For the two presented case studies, using snow cover a-priori database in the locations of originally deemed as coastline improves retrieval. This study suggests that it is particularly important to have more accurate GPROF surface classifications and better representativeness of the a-priori databases to improve intense lake-effect snow detection and retrieval performance.

We report the discovery and confirmation of two new hot Jupiters discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite(TESS): TOI 564 b and TOI 905 b. The transits of these two planets were initially observed by TESS with orbital periods of 1.651 and 3.739 days, respectively. We conducted follow-up observations of each system from the ground, including photometry in multiple filters, speckle interferometry, and radial velocity measurements. For TOI 564 b, our global fitting revealed a classical hot Jupiter with a mass of-+1.4630.0960.10MJand a radius of-+1.020.290.71RJ. Also a classical hot Jupiter, TOI 905 b has a mass of-+0.6670.0410.042MJand radius of-+1.1710.0510.053RJ. Both planets orbit Sun-like, moderately bright, mid-G dwarf stars with V11. While TOI 905 b fully transits its star, we found that TOI 564 b has a very high transit impact parameter of-+0.9940.0490.083, making it one of only∼20 known systems to exhibit a grazing transit and one of the brightest host stars among them. Therefore, TOI 564 b is one of the most attractive systems to search for additional nontransiting, smaller planets by exploiting the sensitivity of grazing transits to small changes in inclination and transit duration over a timescale of several years.

We report the first confirmation of a hot Jupiter discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission: HD 202772A b. The transit signal was detected in the data from TESS Sector 1, and was confirmed to be of planetary origin through radial velocity (RV) measurements. HD 202772A b is orbiting a mildly evolved star with a period of 3.3 days. With an apparent magnitude of V = 8.3, the star is among the brightest and most massive known to host a hot Jupiter. Based on the 27 days of TESS photometry and RV data from the CHIRON, HARPS, and Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph, the planet has a mass of 1.017(Sup +0.070, sub 0.068) M(J) and radius of 1.545(sup +0.052, sub -0.060) R(J), making it an inflated gas giant. HD 202772A b is a rare example of a transiting hot Jupiter around a quickly evolving star. It is also one of the most strongly irradiated hot Jupiters currently known.

Degradation of freshwater ecosystems and the services they provide is a primary cause of increasing water insecurity, raising the need for integrated solutions to freshwater management. While methods for characterizing the multi-faceted challenges of managing freshwater ecosystems abound, they tend to emphasize either social or ecological dimensions and fall short of being truly integrative. This paper suggests that management for sustainability of freshwater systems needs to consider the linkages between human water uses, freshwater ecosystems and governance. We present a conceptualization of freshwater resources as part of an integrated social-ecological system and propose a set of corresponding indicators to monitor freshwater ecosystem health and to highlight priorities for management. We demonstrate an application of this new framework -the Freshwater Health Index (FHI) - in the Dongjiang River Basin in southern China, where stakeholders are addressing multiple and conflicting freshwater demands. By combining empirical and modeled datasets with surveys to gauge stakeholders' preferences and elicit expert information about governance mechanisms, the FHI helps stakeholders understand the status of freshwater ecosystems in their basin, how ecosystems are being manipulated to enhance or decrease water-related services, and how well the existing water re-source management regime is equipped to govern these dynamics over time. This framework helps to operationalize a truly integrated approach to water resource management by recognizing the interplay between governance, stakeholders, freshwater ecosystems and the services they provide
