1. A multi-band study of pulsar glitches with Fermi-LAT and Parkes

Abstract

Pulsar glitch is a phenomenon characterized by abrupt changes in the spin period over less than a minute. We present a comprehensive analysis of glitches in four gamma-ray pulsars by combining the timing observation data of \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (\textit{Fermi}-LAT) and Parkes 64 m radio telescope. The timing data of five pulsars, namely PSRs J1028$-$5819, J1420$-$6048, J1509$-$5850, J1709$-$4429 (B1706$-$44) and J1718$-$3825, spanning over 14 years of observations for each, are examined. A total of 12 glitches are identified in four pulsars, including a previously unreported glitch. That is, a new small glitch is identified for PSR J1718$-$3825 in MJD $\sim$ 59121(8), and the fractional glitch size was $\Delta \nu/\nu \sim 1.9(2) \times 10^{-9}$. For PSR J1420$-$6048, our investigation confirms the existence of two linear recovery terms during the evolution of $\dot{\nu}$ subsequent to glitches 4, 6 and 8, and identified an exponential recovery process in glitch 8, with $Q = 0.0131(5)$, $\tau_{\rm d} = 100(6)$ d. Regarding the fourth glitch of PSR J1709$-$4429, our analysis reveals the presence of two exponential recovery terms with healing parameters and decay time-scales $Q$1=0.0104(5), $\tau_{\rm d1}=72(4)$ d and $Q$2 = 0.006(1), $\tau_{\rm d2}=4.2(6)$ d, respectively. For the remaining previously reported glitches, we refine the glitch epochs and glitch observables through precise fitting of the timing residual data. We extensively discuss how multi-band data of glitches can help better characterize the glitch recoveries and constrain the underlying physics of glitch events. Abstract

Through a detailed timing analysis of $\textit{Fermi}$-LAT data, the rotational behavior of the $\gamma$-ray pulsar PSR J1522$-$5735 was tracked from August 2008 (MJD 54692) to January 2024 (MJD 60320). During this 15.4-year period, two over-recovery glitches and four anti-glitches were identified, marking a rare occurrence in rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs). The magnitudes of these (net) spin-down glitches were determined to be $|\Delta\nu_{\rm g}/\nu| \sim 10^{-8}$, well above the estimated detectability limit. For the two over-recovery glitches, the respective recovery fractions $Q$ are $2.1(7)$ and $1.4(2)$. Further analysis showed no substantial variations in either the flux or pulse profile shape in any of these events, suggesting that small (net) spin-down glitches, unlike large events observed in magnetars and magnetar-like RPPs, may occur without leaving an impact on the magnetosphere. Within the framework of the vortex creep and vortex bending models, anti-glitches and over-recoveries indicate the recoupling of vortex lines that moved inward as a result of a crustquake; meanwhile, the apparent fluctuations in the spin-down rate after the glitches occur as a result of the coupling of the oscillations of bent vortex lines to the magnetosphere., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJL. Abstract

We present a comprehensive timing analysis on the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0440.9+4431 using observations from \textit{NICER} and \textit{Insight}-HXMT during the 2022--2023 outburst. The power density spectrum (PDS) of RX J0440.9+4431 exhibits typical aperiodic variability in X-ray flux across a wide frequency range. During a super-critical accretion state, we detect quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at 0.2--0.5\,Hz in the light curves of five pulses for RX J0440.9+4431. The observed QPOs manifest during flares, while the flares appear at the peaks of the pulse profiles on a timescale of seconds and are primarily caused by an increase in hard photons. These flares can be explained by increased material ingestion in the accretion column at a fixed phase, primarily generating hard photons. Alternatively, an increase in accretion rate, independent of phase, may result in highly beamed hard photons within the accretion column, causing the flares. We argue the origin of QPOs to instabilities within the accretion flow. Additionally, we find that the break frequencies in the noise power spectra align well with $\propto L_{\mathrm{x}}^{3 / 7}$ across three orders of magnitude in the luminosity, which points to a relatively strong magnetic field in RX J0440.9+4431, estimated to be \textasciitilde$10^{13}$\,G., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

We report the phase-resolved spectral results of the first Galactic Pulsating Ultra-Luminous X-ray source (PULX) Swift J0243.6+6124, modeling at its 2017-2018 outburst peak using data collected by the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT). The broad energy coverage of Insight-HXMT allows us to obtain more accurate spectral continuum to reduce the coupling of broad iron line profiles with other components. We use three different continuum spectrum models but obtain similar iron line results. For the first time, we detected the pulse characteristics of the broad iron line in a PULX. The variation in width and intensity of this iron line with $\sigma \sim 1.2-1.5$\,keV has a phase offset of about 0.25 from the pulse phase. We suggest that the uneven irradiation of the thick inner disk by the accretion column produces the modulated variation of the broad iron line. In addition, the non-pulsed narrow line is suggested to come from the outer disk region.

Abstract

PSR J1048$-$5832 (B1046$-$58) is a Vela-like pulsar that has exhibited multiple glitch events. In this study, we analyze the timing data spanning nearly 16 years, acquired from both the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Parkes 64 m radio telescope. As a result, a total of five glitches are detected within this dataset. Among them, a previously unknown small glitch is newly found at MJD 56985(9) (November 24, 2014), making it the smallest glitch recorded from this source so far. The increments of the spin frequency and its first derivative are $\Delta \nu \approx 2.2(3) \times 10^ {-8} $ Hz, and $\Delta \dot{\nu} \approx 3(2) \times 10^ {-15}$ s$^{-2}$, respectively. Significant changes in the integrated normalized mean pulse profile are detected following three of the five glitch events, notably in the radio band. Although no evidence of a correlation is found between the spin-down rate and profile evolution, the jump phenomenon of $W_{55}$ (pulse width at the 55% peak amplitude) after the glitch in the narrow mode suggests that the glitch may influence the profile change. We discuss the influence of glitches on the pulsar's emission properties in terms of platelet motion by a crustquake and also put constraints on the equation of state from the moment of inertia and response timescales of involved superfluid layers inside the neutron star., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables, MNRAS (2024) accepted

Abstract

RX J0440.9+4431, a Be/X-ray binary, had its brightest outburst in 2022 since its discovery, with a peak X-ray flux of 2.25 Crab (as recorded by Swift/BAT, 15-50 keV). We analyze the timing properties of this giant outburst using data from Insight-HXMT and NICER, focusing on the evolution of the pulse profile and pulse fraction. We observe that when the luminosity reached around ~ 3*10^{37} er s^{-1}, a transition from double-peaked to single-peaked pulse profiles occurred across the energy range, with the peak of the low-energy profile aligning gradually with the peak of the high-energy profile. This change indicates a transition from subcritical to supercritical accretion. Additionally, we found a concave in the pulse fraction as a function of energy around 20-30 keV throughout the entire outburst period. Compared to the low luminosity, the concave becomes weaker in high luminosities, and overall, the pulse fraction is higher. We propose that this concave could be caused by the scattering of high-energy photons by the atmosphere of a neutron star, leading to a dilution of the pulse fraction. As the accretion reaches the supercritical state, the accretion column height increases, resulting in a larger direct component of strongly beamed X-ray flux, and an elevated pulse fraction., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

MAXI J181-195 is a newly discovered accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar that went outburst in June 2022. Through timing analysis with NICER and NuSTAR observations, we find a transient modulation at ~2.5 Hz during the decay period of MAXI J1816-195. The modulation is strongly correlated with a spectral hardening, and its fractional rms amplitude increases with energy. These results suggest that the modulation is likely to be produced in an unstable corona. In addition, the presence of the modulation during thermonuclear bursts indicates that it may originate from a disk-corona where the optical depth is likely the main factor affecting the modulation, rather than temperature. Moreover, we find significant reflection features in the spectra observed simultaneously by NICER and NuSTAR, including a relativistically broadened Fe-K line around 6-7 keV, and a Compton hump in the 10-30 keV energy band. The radius of the inner disc is constrained to be Rin = (1.04-1.23) RISCO based on reflection modeling of the broadband spectra. Assuming that the inner disc is truncated at the magnetosphere radius, we estimate that the magnetic field strength is < 4.67 * 10e8 G., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

8. Quantum-improved phase estimation with a displacement-assisted SU(1,1) interferometer

Abstract

By performing two local displacement operations (LDOs) inside an SU(1,1) interferometer, called as the displacement-assisted SU(1,1) [DSU(1,1)], both the phase sensitivity based on homodyne detection and quantum Fisher information (QFI) with and without photon losses are investigated in this paper. In this DSU(1,1) interferometer, we focus our attention on the extent to which the introduced LDO affects the phase sensitivity and the QFI, even in the realistic scenario. Our analyses show that the estimation performance of DSU(1,1) interferometer is always better than that of SU(1,1) interferometer without the LDO, especially the phase precision of the former in the ideal scenario gradually approaching to the Heisenberg limit via the increase of the LDO strength. More significantly, different from the latter, the robustness of the former can be enhanced markedly by regulating and controlling the LDO. Abstract

We describe an analysis comparing the $p\bar{p}$ elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in $pp$ collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the $pp$ cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4$\sigma$ level and thus provide evidence for the $t$-channel exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of the same $C$-odd exchange based on the total cross section and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic scattering amplitude in $pp$ scattering. The combined significance of these results is larger than 5$\sigma$ and is interpreted as the first observation of the exchange of a colorless, $C$-odd gluonic compound., Comment: D0 and TOTEM Collaborations

Abstract

Background: The study of deep-inelastic reactions of nuclei provide a vehicle to investigate nuclear transport phenomena for a full range of equilibration dynamics. These inquires provide us the ingredients to model such phenomena and help answer important questions about the nuclear Equation of State (EOS) and its evolution as a function of neutron-to-proton $(N/Z)$ ratio. Purpose: The motivation is to examine the real-time dynamics of nuclear transport phenomena and its dependence on $(N/Z)$ asymmetry from a microscopic point of view to avoid any pre-conceived assumptions about the involved processes. Method: Time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method in full 3D is employed to calculate deep-inelastic reactions of $^{78}$Kr+$^{208}$Pb and $^{92}$Kr+$^{208}$Pb systems at 8.5~MeV$/A$. The impact parameter and energy-loss dependence of relevant observables are calculated. In addition, density constrained TDHF method is used to compute excitation energies of the primary fragments. The statistical deexcitation code GEMINI is utilized to examine the final reaction products. Results: The kinetic energy loss and sticking times as a function of impact parameter are calculated. Final properties of the fragments (charge, mass, scattering angle, kinetic energy) are computed. Conclusions: We find a smooth dependence of the energy loss, $E_\mathrm{loss}$, on the impact parameter for both systems. On the other hand the transfer properties for low $E_\mathrm{loss}$ values are very different for the two systems but become similar in the higher $E_\mathrm{loss}$ regime. The mean life time of the charge equilibration process, obtained from the final $(N-Z)/A$ value of the fragments, is shown to be $\sim 0.5$~zs. This value is slightly larger (but of the same order) than the value obtained from reactions at Fermi energies., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

An indirect-direct hybrid-drive work-dominated hotspot ignition scheme for inertial confinement fusion is proposed: a layered fuel capsule inside a spherical hohlraum with an octahedral symmetry is compressed first by indirect-drive soft-x rays (radiation) and then by direct-drive lasers in last pulse duration. In this scheme, an enhanced shock and a follow-up compression wave for ignition with pressure far greater than the radiation ablation pressure are driven by the direct-drive lasers, and provide large pdV work to the hotspot to perform the work-dominated ignition. The numerical simulations show that the enhanced shock stops the reflections of indirect-drive shock at the main fuel-hotspot interface, and therefore significantly suppresses the hydrodynamic instabilities and asymmetry. Based on the indirect-drive implosion dynamics the hotspot is further compressed and heated by the enhanced shock and follow-up compression wave, resulting in the work-dominated hotspot ignition and burn with a maximal implosion velocity of ~400 km/s and a lower convergence ratio of ~25. The fusion yield of 15 MJ using total laser energy of 1.32 MJ is achieved., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We summarize and combine direct measurements of the mass of the $W$ boson in $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 \text{TeV}$ proton-antiproton collision data collected by CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Earlier measurements from CDF and D0 are combined with the two latest, more precise measurements: a CDF measurement in the electron and muon channels using data corresponding to $2.2 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, and a D0 measurement in the electron channel using data corresponding to $4.3 \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The resulting Tevatron average for the mass of the $W$ boson is $\MW = 80\,387 \pm 16 \text{MeV}$. Including measurements obtained in electron-positron collisions at LEP yields the most precise value of $\MW = 80\,385 \pm 15 \text{MeV}$., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. D

Abstract

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle, with a mass about 40 times larger than the mass of its isospin partner, the bottom quark. It decays almost 100% of the time to a $W$ boson and a bottom quark. Using top-antitop pairs at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the CDF and {\dzero} collaborations have measured the top quark's mass in different final states for integrated luminosities of up to 5.8 fb$^{-1}$. This paper reports on a combination of these measurements that results in a more precise value of the mass than any individual decay channel can provide. It describes the treatment of the systematic uncertainties and their correlations. The mass value determined is $173.18 \pm 0.56 \thinspace ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.75 \thinspace ({\rm syst})$ GeV or $173.18 \pm 0.94$ GeV, which has a precision of $\pm 0.54%$, making this the most precise determination of the top quark mass., Comment: 30 pages and 6 figures, published in Phys. Abstract

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract

We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks ($\tilde{t}_{1}$), the lightest supersymmetric partners of the top quarks, in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of {7.3 $fb^{-1}$} collected with the \dzero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Each scalar top quark is assumed to decay into a $b$ quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino ($\tilde{\nu}$). We investigate final states arising from $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}\mu\tau \tilde{\nu} \tilde{\nu}$ and $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}\tau\tau \tilde{\nu} \tilde{\nu}$. With no significant excess of events observed above the background expected from the standard model, we set exclusion limits on this production process in the ($m_{\tilde{t}_{1}}$,$m_{\tilde{\nu}}$) plane., Comment: Submitted to Phys. 16. Nonlinear evolution of the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability with preheating

Abstract

Evolution of the single-mode ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the presence of preheating is investigated numerically. It is found that the instability evolution depends strongly on the preheating length $L$ in front of the ablation-front interface. For weak preheating ($L/L_{\rm SH}\leq f_0$, where $L_{\rm SH}$ is the Spitzer-Harm length and $f_0\sim 20$ is a critical value), the linear growth rate has a sharp maximum and a secondary spike-bubble structure is generated. Interaction of this growing structure with the master spike-bubble leads to rupture of the latter. However, for strong preheating ($L/L_{\rm SH}>20$), the linear growth rate has no sharp maximum and no secondary spike-bubble is generated. Instead, the master spike-bubble evolves into an elongated jet. These results are interpreted in terms of the evolution and interaction of the instability-generated harmonic modes., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This work investigates a kind of metallic magnetic cavity based on slit-hole resonators (SHRs). Two orthogonal hybrid magnetic resonance modes of the cavity with a large spatial overlap are predesigned at the wavelengths of 980 nm and 1550 nm. The Yb-Er co-doped material serving as a gain medium is set in the cavity; this enables the resonator to have high optical activity. The numerical result shows that the strong lasing at 1550 nm may be achieved when the cavity array is pumped at 980 nm. Abstract

We propose and analyze theoretically a double magnetic plasmon resonance nanolaser, in which Ytterbium-erbium co-doped material is used as the gain medium. Through design of the double magnetic resonance modes, pumping light (980nm) can be resonantly absorbed and laser light (1550nm) can be resonantly generated simultaneously. We introduce a set of rate equations combined to describe the operation of the laser and predict the lasing condition. According to our calculations, the disadvantage that pumping light is difficult to be absorbed by a thin slab of gain materials can be overcome., Comment: 13pages, 4 figures

19. Isoscaling in statistical fragment emission in an extended compound nucleus model

Abstract

Based on an extended compound nucleus model, isospin effects in statistical fragment emission from excited nuclear systems are investigated. An experimentally observed scaling behavior of the ratio of isotope yields $Y_i(N,Z)$ from two similar emitting sources with different neutron-to-proton ratios is predicted theoretically, i.e., the relationship of $Y_2/Y_1 \propto exp(\alpha N + \beta Z)$ is demonstrated. The symmetry energy coefficient $C_{sym}$ extracted from the simulation results is $\sim$ 27 MeV which is consistent with realistic theoretical estimates and recent experimental data. The influence of the surface entropy on the isoscaling behavior is discussed in detail. It is found that although the surface entropy increases the numercial values of isoscaling parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$, it does not affect the isoscaling behavior qualitatively and has only a minor effect on the extracted symmetry energy coefficient., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures
