Strong interactions between different degrees of freedom lead to exotic phases of matter with complex order parameters and emergent collective excitations. Conventional techniques, such as scattering and transport, probe the amplitudes of these excitations, but they are typically insensitive to phase. Therefore, novel methods with phase sensitivity are required to understand ground states with phase modulations and interactions that couple to the phase of collective modes. Here, by performing phase-resolved coherent phonon spectroscopy (CPS), we reveal a hidden spin-lattice coupling in a vdW antiferromagnet FePS$_{3}$ that eluded other phase-insensitive conventional probes, such as Raman and X-ray scattering. With comparative analysis and analytical calculations, we directly show that the magnetic order in FePS$_{3}$ selectively couples to the trigonal distortions through partially filled t$_{2g}$ orbitals. This magnetoelastic coupling is linear in magnetic order and lattice parameters, rendering these distortions inaccessible to inelastic scattering techniques. In van der Waals (vdW) materials, strong coupling between different degrees of freedom can hybridize elementary excitations into bound states with mixed character. Correctly identifying the nature and composition of these bound states is key to understanding their ground state properties and excitation spectra. Here, we use ultrafast spectroscopy to reveal bound states of d-orbitals and phonons in 2D vdW antiferromagnet NiPS3. These bound states manifest themselves through equally spaced phonon replicas in frequency domain. These states are optically dark above the N\'eel temperature and become accessible with magnetic order. By launching this phonon and spectrally tracking its amplitude, we establish the electronic origin of bound states as localized d-d excitations. Our data directly yield electron-phonon coupling strength which exceeds the highest known value in 2D systems. These results demonstrate NiPS3 as a platform to study strong interactions between spins, orbitals and lattice, and open pathways to coherent control of 2D magnets.

The postoperative range of motion is one of the crucial factors indicating the outcome of Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Although the correlation between range of knee flexion and posterior condylar offset (PCO) is controversial in the literature, PCO maintains its importance on evaluation of TKA. Due to limitations on PCO measurement, two novel parameters, posterior condylar offset ratio (PCOR) and anterior condylar offset ratio (ACOR), were introduced. Nowadays, the calculation of PCOR and ACOR on plain lateral radiographs is done manually by orthopedic surgeons. In this regard, we developed a software, AutoCOR, to calculate PCOR and ACOR autonomously, utilizing unsupervised machine learning algorithm (k-means clustering) and digital image processing techniques. The software AutoCOR is capable of detecting the anterior/posterior edge points and anterior/posterior cortex of the femoral shaft on true postoperative lateral conventional radiographs. To test the algorithm, 50 postoperative true lateral radiographs from Istanbul Kosuyolu Medipol Hospital Database were used (32 patients). The mean PCOR was 0.984 (SD 0.235) in software results and 0.972 (SD 0.164) in ground truth values. It shows strong and significant correlation between software and ground truth values (Pearson r=0.845 p<0.0001). The mean ACOR was 0.107 (SD 0.092) in software results and 0.107 (SD 0.070) in ground truth values. It shows moderate and significant correlation between software and ground truth values (Spearman's rs=0.519 p=0.0001412). Complex systems, which consist of a large number of interacting constituents, often exhibit universal behavior near a phase transition. A slowdown of certain dynamical observables is one such recurring feature found in a vast array of contexts. This phenomenon, known as critical slowing down, is well studied mostly in thermodynamic phase transitions. However, it is less understood in highly nonequilibrium settings, where the time it takes to traverse the phase boundary becomes comparable to the timescale of dynamical fluctuations. Using transient optical spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction, we studied a photo-induced transition of a model charge-density-wave (CDW) compound, LaTe$_3$. We observed that it takes the longest time to suppress the order parameter at the threshold photoexcitation density, where the CDW transiently vanishes. This finding can be quantitatively captured by generalizing the time-dependent Landau theory to a system far from equilibrium. The experimental observation and theoretical understanding of dynamical slowing down may offer insight into other general principles behind nonequilibrium phase transitions in many-body systems.

Metallic layers are known to be used for the suppression of wave transmission when their thickness is sufficiently higher than the skin depth of metal. If in addition to blocking the transmission, metallic layers have the feature of blocking the reflection, too, they would make perfect absorbers. In this work, we propose an experimental approach of using a single thin layer of Manganese (Mn) as both the transmission suppresser and the reflection suppresser. This approach leads to obtaining lithography-free ultra-broadband perfect absorption in an ultra-wide spectrum ranging from Ultraviolet (UV) to Far Infrared (FIR). The measured average absorption is approximately 99%. Such a promising result can be achieved by only coating a single Mn layer on high-roughness substrates that include random nano-pyramids on it. In other words, we do not need a stack of different materials and combinations of geometrical features. The high roughness is realized on a commercial Silicon wafer substrate by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching. The key to this ultra-wideband absorption is electromagnetic field tapering which exists due to the graded-index feature of the structure (known as moth-eye effect), along with the ideal optical properties of Mn which makes it an excellent metal for broadband absorption applications. A full experimental characterization of the fabricated samples is presented along with the physical analysis of the phenomena. Upon excitation with an intense ultrafast laser pulse, a symmetry-broken ground state can undergo a non-equilibrium phase transition through pathways dissimilar from those in thermal equilibrium. Determining the mechanism underlying these photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) has been a long-standing issue in the study of condensed matter systems. To this end, we investigate the light-induced melting of a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) material, LaTe$_3$. Using a suite of time-resolved probes, we independently track the amplitude and phase dynamics of the CDW. We find that a quick ($\sim\,$1$\,$ps) recovery of the CDW amplitude is followed by a slower reestablishment of phase coherence. This longer timescale is dictated by the presence of topological defects: long-range order (LRO) is inhibited and is only restored when the defects annihilate. Our results provide a framework for understanding other PIPTs by identifying the generation of defects as a governing mechanism.

Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is applied to investigate the electron beam effects on the X-pinch produced K-shell Aluminum synthetic spectra. The radiating plasma is produced by the explosion of two 25-{\mu}m Al wires on a compact L-C (40kV, 200kA and 200ns) generator and time integrated spectra are recorded using de Broglie spectrographs. The electron temperature and density(Te = 80 eV and ne = 1x1020 cm-3), as well as the hot electron beam fraction (f = 0.2 and energy centered at 10 keV) in the Al plasma, were extracted using coefficients of principal components derived from the non-LTE K-shell Al model. LDA shows that the weak transitions of Al He {\alpha} Ly {\alpha}and He {\beta} represents Stark splitting and shifting profiles. Finally, these transitions follows the elliptic polarization of Stokes V profiles in the presence of electron beam fraction. A 3-dimensional representation of LDA shows that the presence of electron beam, reflects outward spiral turbulence. These spirals show the signature of Langmuir turbulence. These spirals are modeled with logistic growth of predator-prey model. This modeling suggests that the electron beams and ions represent the preys and predator, respectively and the center region of the spirals tends to have low temperatures of 50-100 eV., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Free-standing exfoliated monolayer graphene is an ultra-thin flexible membrane, which exhibits out of plane deformation or corrugation. In this paper, a technique is described to measure the band structure of such free-standing graphene by angle-resolved photoemission. Our results show that photoelectron coherence is limited by the crystal corrugation. However, by combining surface morphology measurements of the graphene roughness with angle-resolved photoemission, energy dependent quasiparticle lifetime and bandstructure measurements can be extracted. Our measurements rely on our development of an analytical formulation for relating the crystal corrugation to the photoemission linewidth. Our ARPES measurements show that, despite significant deviation from planarity of the crystal, the electronic structure of exfoliated suspended graphene is nearly that of ideal, undoped graphene; we measure the Dirac point to be within 25 meV of $E_F$ . Further, we show that suspended graphene behaves as a marginal Fermi-liquid, with a quasiparticle lifetime which scales as $(E - E_F)^{-1}$; comparison with other graphene and graphite data is discussed.
