Monopoles and braids are exotic but elusive aspects of fundamental theories of light and matter. In lattice systems, monopoles of band-structure degeneracies are subject to well-established no-go (doubling) theorems that appear to universally apply in closed Hermitian systems and open non-Hermitian systems alike. However, the non-Abelian braid topology of non-Hermitian multi-band systems provides a remarkable loophole to these constraints. Here we make use of this loophole, and experimentally implement, for the first time, a monopole degeneracy in a non-Hermitian three-band system in the form of a single third-order exceptional point. We explicitly demonstrate the intricate braiding topology and the non-Abelian fusion rules underlying the monopole degeneracy. The experiment is carried out using a new design of single-photon interferometry, enabling eigenstate and spectral resolutions for non-Hermitian multi-band systems with widely tunable parameters. Buildup and switching mechanisms of solitons in complex nonlinear systems are fundamentally important dynamical regimes. Using a novel strongly nonlinear optical system,the work reveals a new buildup scenario for soliton molecules , which includes a long-duration stage dominated by the emergence of transient NLPs modes to withstand strong disturbances arising from turbulence and extreme nonlinearity in the optical cavity. Systematic simulations reveal effects of the PC rotation angle and intra-cavity nonlinearity on the periodic phase transitions between the different soliton states, and accurately reproduce the experimentally observed buildup and switching mechanisms. Soliton pulsations are ubiquitous feature of non-stationary soliton dynamics in mode-locked lasers and many other physical systems. To overcome difficulties related to huge amount of necessary computations and low efficiency of traditional numerical methods in modeling the evolution of non-stationary solitons, we propose a two-parallel bidirectional long short-term memory recurrent neural network, with the main objective to predict dynamics of vector-soliton pulsations in various complex states, whose real-time dynamics is verified by experiments. Besides, the scheme of coded information storage based on the TP-Bi_LSTM RNN, instead of actual pulse signals, is realized too. Communication is essential for advancing science and technology. Quantum communication, in particular, benefits from the use of catalysts. During the communication process, these catalysts enhance performance while remaining unchanged. Although chemical catalysts that undergo deactivation typically perform worse than those that remain unaffected, quantum catalysts, referred to as embezzling catalysts, can surprisingly outperform their non-deactivating counterparts despite experiencing slight alterations. In this work, we employ embezzling quantum catalysts to enhance the transmission of both quantum and classical information. Our results reveal that using embezzling catalysts augments the efficiency of information transmission across noisy quantum channels, ensuring a non-zero catalytic channel capacity. Furthermore, we introduce catalytic superdense coding, demonstrating how embezzling catalysts can enhance the transmission of classical information. Quantum teleportation is the process of transferring quantum information using classical communication and pre-shared entanglement. This process can benefit from the use of catalysts, which are ancillary entangled states that can enhance teleportation without being consumed. While chemical catalysts undergoing deactivation invariably exhibit inferior performance compared to those unaffected by deactivation, quantum catalysts, termed embezzling catalysts, that are subject to deactivation, may surprisingly outperform their non-deactivating counterparts. In this work, we present teleportation protocols with embezzling catalyst that can achieve arbitrarily high fidelity, namely the teleported state can be made arbitrarily close to the original state, with finite-dimensional embezzling catalysts. We show that some embezzling catalysts are universal, meaning that they can improve the teleportation fidelity for any pre-shared entanglement. Open systems possess unique potentials in high-precision sensing, yet the majority of previous studies rely on the spectral singularities known as exceptional points. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate universal non-Hermitian sensing in the absence of exceptional points. The scheme makes use of the intrinsic sensitivity of a non-Hermitian probe to weak external fields, which can be understood as the direct consequence of non-Hermiticity. We confirm the basic mechanism by simulating the sensor-field dynamics using photon interferometry, and, as a concrete example, demonstrate the enhanced sensing of signals encoded in the setting angle of a wave plate. While the sensitivity of the probe is ultimately limited by the measurement noise, we find the non-Hermitian sensor showing superior performance under background noises that cannot be suppressed through repetitive measurements. Our experiment opens the avenue of enhanced sensing without exceptional points, complementing existing efforts aimed at harnessing the unique features of open systems.

This paper delves into an in-depth exploration of the Variable Projection (VP) algorithm, a powerful tool for solving separable nonlinear optimization problems across multiple domains, including system identification, image processing, and machine learning. We first establish a theoretical framework to examine the effect of the approximate treatment of the coupling relationship among parameters on the local convergence of the VP algorithm and theoretically prove that the Kaufman's VP algorithm can achieve a similar convergence rate as the Golub \& Pereyra's form. These studies fill the gap in the existing convergence theory analysis, and provide a solid foundation for understanding the mechanism of VP algorithm and broadening its application horizons. Furthermore, drawing inspiration from these theoretical revelations, we design a refined VP algorithm for handling separable nonlinear optimization problems characterized by large residual, called VPLR, which boosts the convergence performance by addressing the interdependence of parameters within the separable model and by continually correcting the approximated Hessian matrix to counteract the influence of large residual during the iterative process. The Yang-Lee edge singularity was originally studied from the standpoint of mathematical foundations of phase transitions, and its physical demonstration has been of active interest both theoretically and experimentally. However, the presence of an imaginary magnetic field in the Yang-Lee edge singularity has made it challenging to develop a direct observation of the anomalous scaling with negative scaling dimension associated with this critical phenomenon. We experimentally implement an imaginary magnetic field and demonstrate the Yang-Lee edge singularity through a nonunitary evolution governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in an open quantum system, where a classical system is mapped to a quantum system via the equivalent canonical partition function. In particular, we directly observe the partition function in our experiment using heralded single photons. The nonunitary quantum criticality is identified with the singularity at an exceptional point. Dynamic behaviors of a physical system often originate from its spectral properties. In open systems, where the effective non-Hermitian description enables a wealth of spectral structures on the complex plane, the concomitant dynamics is significantly enriched, whereas the identification and comprehension of the underlying connections are challenging. Here we experimentally demonstrate the correspondence between the transient self acceleration of local excitations and the non-Hermitian spectral topology using lossy photonic quantum walks. Focusing first on one-dimensional quantum walks, we show that the measured short-time acceleration of the wave function is proportional to the area enclosed by the eigenspectrum. We then reveal similar correspondence in two-dimension quantum walks, where the self acceleration is proportional to the volume enclosed by the eigenspectrum in the complex parameter space. In both dimensions, the transient self acceleration crosses over to a long-time behavior dominated by a constant flow at the drift velocity. Our results unveil the universal correspondence between spectral topology and transient dynamics, and offer a sensitive probe for phenomena in non-Hermitian systems that originate from spectral geometry., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

In recent years, the demand for dental implants has surged, driven by their high success rates and esthetic advantages. However, accurate prediction of missing teeth for precise digital implant planning remains a challenge due to the intricate nature of dental structures and the variability in tooth loss patterns. This study presents a novel framework for accurate prediction of missing teeth in different patterns, facilitating digital implant planning. The proposed framework begins by estimating point-to-point correspondence among a dataset of dental mesh models reconstructed from CBCT images of healthy subjects. Subsequently, tooth dictionaries are constructed for each tooth type, encoding their position and shape information based on the established point-to-point correspondence. To predict missing teeth in a given dental mesh model, sparse coefficients are learned by sparsely representing adjacent teeth of the missing teeth using the corresponding tooth dictionaries. These coefficients are then applied to the dictionaries of the missing teeth to generate accurate predictions of their positions and shapes. The evaluation results on real subjects shows that our proposed framework achieves an average prediction error of 1.04mm for predictions of single missing tooth and an average prediction error of 1.33mm for the prediction of 14 missing teeth, which demonstrates its capability of accurately predicting missing teeth in various patterns. By accurately predicting missing teeth, dental professionals can improve the planning and placement of dental implants, leading to better esthetic and functional outcomes for patients undergoing dental implant procedures.

We present an analysis of 288 young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Perseus Molecular Cloud that have well defined $g$ and $r$-band lightcurves from the Zwicky Transient Facility. Of the 288 YSOs, 238 sources (83% of our working sample) are identified as variables based on the normalized peak-to-peak variability metric, with variability fraction of 92% for stars with disks and 77% for the diskless populations. These variables are classified into different categories using the quasiperiodicity ($Q$) and flux asymmetry ($M$) metrics. Fifty-three variables are classified as strictly periodic objects that are well phased and can be attributed to spot modulated stellar rotation. We also identify 22 bursters and 25 dippers, which can be attributed to accretion burst and variable extinction, respectively. YSOs with disks tend to have asymmetric and non-repeatable lightcurves, while the YSOs without disks tend to have (quasi)periodic lightcurves. The periodic variables have the steepest change in $g$ versus $g-r$, while bursters have much flatter changes than dippers in $g$ versus $g-r$. Periodic and quasiperiodic variables display the lowest variability amplitude. Simple models suggest that the variability amplitudes of periodic variables correspond to changes of the spot coverage of 30% to 40%, burster variables are attributed to accretion luminosity changes in the range of $L_{\rm acc}/L_{\star}=0.1-0.3$, and dippers are due to variable extinction with $A_{V}$ changes in the range of $0.5-1.3\;$mag., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in RAA

Dental template and parametric dental models are important tools for various applications in digital dentistry. However, constructing an unbiased dental template and accurate parametric dental models remains a challenging task due to the complex anatomical and morphological dental structures and also low volume ratio of the teeth. In this study, we develop an unbiased dental template by constructing an accurate dental atlas from CBCT images with guidance of teeth segmentation. First, to address the challenges, we propose to enhance the CBCT images and their segmentation images, including image cropping, image masking and segmentation intensity reassigning. Then, we further use the segmentation images to perform co-registration with the CBCT images to generate an accurate dental atlas, from which an unbiased dental template can be generated. By leveraging the unbiased dental template, we construct parametric dental models by estimating point-to-point correspondences between the dental models and employing Principal Component Analysis to determine shape subspaces of the parametric dental models. A total of 159 CBCT images of real subjects are collected to perform the constructions. Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness of our proposed method in constructing unbiased dental template and parametric dental model. The non-Hermitian skin effect, by which the eigenstates of Hamiltonian are predominantly localized at the boundary, has revealed a strong sensitivity of non-Hermitian systems to the boundary condition. Here we experimentally observe a striking boundary-induced dynamical phenomenon known as the non-Hermitian edge burst, which is characterized by a sharp boundary accumulation of loss in non-Hermitian time evolutions. In contrast to the eigenstate localization, the edge burst represents a generic non-Hermitian dynamical phenomenon that occurs in real time. Our experiment, based on photonic quantum walks, not only confirms the prediction of the phenomenon, but also unveils its complete space-time dynamics. Exceptional points (EPs) of non-Hermitian (NH) systems have recently attracted increasing attention due to their rich phenomenology and intriguing applications. Compared to the predominantly studied second-order EPs, higher-order EPs have been assumed to play a much less prominent role because they generically require the tuning of more parameters. Here we experimentally simulate two-dimensional topological NH band structures using single-photon interferometry, and observe topologically stable third-order EPs obtained by tuning only two real parameters in the presence of symmetry. In particular, we explore how different symmetries stabilize qualitatively different third-order EPs: the parity-time symmetry leads to a generic cube-root dispersion, while a generalized chiral symmetry implies a square-root dispersion coexisting with a flat band. Additionally, we simulate fourfold degeneracies, composed of the non-defective twofold degeneracies and second-order EPs. Image registration of liver dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (DCE-CT) is crucial for diagnosis and image-guided surgical planning of liver cancer. However, intensity variations due to the flow of contrast agents combined with complex spatial motion induced by respiration brings great challenge to existing intensity-based registration methods. To address these problems, we propose a novel structure-aware registration method by incorporating structural information of related organs with segmentation-guided deep registration network. Existing segmentation-guided registration methods only focus on volumetric registration inside the paired organ segmentations, ignoring the inherent attributes of their anatomical structures. In addition, such paired organ segmentations are not always available in DCE-CT images due to the flow of contrast agents. Different from existing segmentation-guided registration methods, our proposed method extracts structural information in hierarchical geometric perspectives of line and surface. Then, according to the extracted structural information, structure-aware constraints are constructed and imposed on the forward and backward deformation field simultaneously. In this way, all available organ segmentations, including unpaired ones, can be fully utilized to avoid the side effect of contrast agent and preserve the topology of organs during registration. Extensive experiments on an in-house liver DCE-CT dataset and a public LiTS dataset show that our proposed method can achieve higher registration accuracy and preserve anatomical structure more effectively than state-of-the-art methods.

Non-reciprocity is an important topic in fundamental physics and quantum-device design, as much effort has been devoted to its engineering and manipulation. Here we experimentally demonstrate non-reciprocal transport in a two-dimensional quantum walk of photons, where the directional propagation is highly tunable through dissipation and synthetic magnetic flux. The non-reciprocal dynamics hereof is a manifestation of the non-Hermitian skin effect, with its direction continuously adjustable through the photon-loss parameters. By contrast, the synthetic flux originates from an engineered geometric phase, which competes with the non-Hermitian skin effect through magnetic confinement. We further demonstrate how the non-reciprocity and synthetic flux impact the dynamics of the Floquet topological edge modes along an engineered boundary. Our results exemplify an intriguing strategy for achieving tunable non-reciprocal transport, highlighting the interplay of non-Hermiticity and gauge fields in quantum systems of higher dimensions., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Multi-modal medical image completion has been extensively applied to alleviate the missing modality issue in a wealth of multi-modal diagnostic tasks. However, for most existing synthesis methods, their inferences of missing modalities can collapse into a deterministic mapping from the available ones, ignoring the uncertainties inherent in the cross-modal relationships. Here, we propose the Unified Multi-Modal Conditional Score-based Generative Model (UMM-CSGM) to take advantage of Score-based Generative Model (SGM) in modeling and stochastically sampling a target probability distribution, and further extend SGM to cross-modal conditional synthesis for various missing-modality configurations in a unified framework. Specifically, UMM-CSGM employs a novel multi-in multi-out Conditional Score Network (mm-CSN) to learn a comprehensive set of cross-modal conditional distributions via conditional diffusion and reverse generation in the complete modality space. In this way, the generation process can be accurately conditioned by all available information, and can fit all possible configurations of missing modalities in a single network. Experiments on BraTS19 dataset show that the UMM-CSGM can more reliably synthesize the heterogeneous enhancement and irregular area in tumor-induced lesions for any missing modalities.

In clinical practice, a segmentation network is often required to continually learn on a sequential data stream from multiple sites rather than a consolidated set, due to the storage cost and privacy restriction. However, during the continual learning process, existing methods are usually restricted in either network memorizability on previous sites or generalizability on unseen sites. This paper aims to tackle the challenging problem of Synchronous Memorizability and Generalizability (SMG) and to simultaneously improve performance on both previous and unseen sites, with a novel proposed SMG-learning framework. First, we propose a Synchronous Gradient Alignment (SGA) objective, which not only promotes the network memorizability by enforcing coordinated optimization for a small exemplar set from previous sites (called replay buffer), but also enhances the generalizability by facilitating site-invariance under simulated domain shift. Second, to simplify the optimization of SGA objective, we design a Dual-Meta algorithm that approximates the SGA objective as dual meta-objectives for optimization without expensive computation overhead. Third, for efficient rehearsal, we configure the replay buffer comprehensively considering additional inter-site diversity to reduce redundancy. Experiments on prostate MRI data sequentially acquired from six institutes demonstrate that our method can simultaneously achieve higher memorizability and generalizability over state-of-the-art methods. By simulating the X-ray paths and the Chapman Model of a flat multi-channel plate and a curved multi-channel plate in the MATLAB, the field of view, local reflection efficiency, spherical aberration, point-spread function, collection efficiency of incident X-ray and peak-to-background ratio on the focal plane of the two devices were compared. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of the flat multi-channel plate and the curved multi-channel plate were compared.

The x-ray polycapillary lens is an optical device with good optic performance. Similar to the traditional X-ray polycapillary lens, square polycapillary slice lens was regulated on X-ray based on the full reflection principle of X-ray in the capillaries surfaces. According to its geometrical structure model and the X-ray tracing principle, a set of X-ray transmission procedures was established. Bell nonlocality and Kochen-Specker contextuality are two remarkable nonclassical features of quantum theory, related to strong correlations between outcomes of measurements performed on quantum systems. Both phenomena can be witnessed by the violation of certain inequalities, the simplest and most important of which are the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) and the Klyachko-Can-Binicio\v{g}lu-Shumovski (KCBS), for Bell nonlocality and Kochen-Specker contextuality, respectively. It has been shown that, using the most common interpretation of Bell scenarios, quantum systems cannot violate both inequalities concomitantly, thus suggesting a monogamous relation between the two phenomena. In this Letter, we show that the joint consideration of the CHSH and KCBS inequalities naturally calls for the so-called generalized Bell scenarios, which, contrary to the previous results, allows for joint violation of them. A photonic experiment thus tests the synchronous violation of both CHSH and KCBS inequalities. Our results agree with the theoretical predictions, thereby providing experimental proof of the coexistence of Bell nonlocality and Kochen-Specker contextuality in the simplest scenario, and shed new light for further explorations of nonclassical features of quantum systems., Comment: 5+6 pages, 3 figures. Higher neutron current densities can provide convenience for neutron experiments. Using neutron optical focusing elements, large flux beams transported to sample can be achieved. As one kind of focusing elements, polycapillary lens is very suitable for neutron absorption experiments such as PGAA and NDP technology. At present, a Neutron Physics and Application Spectrometer was in construction in CSNS, which is the first pulsed neutron source in China. To provide some suggestions and ideas for the following design of enhanced PGAA or NDP instrument with polycapillary lens in CSNS, a first neutron focusing experiment using polycapillary lens in CSNS was conducted. For 0.5-12.6 polychromatic beam, a focal spot with FWHM of 800 was obtained. As the value of wavelength increased, the beam size, transmission efficiency and gain increased. Non-Hermiticity significantly enriches the properties of topological models, leading to exotic features such as the non-Hermitian skin effects and non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence that have no counterparts in Hermitian settings. Its impact is particularly illustrating in non-Hermitian quasicrystals where the interplay between non-Hermiticity and quasiperiodicity results in the concurrence of the delocalization-localization transition, the parity-time (PT)-symmetry breaking, and the onset of the non-Hermitian skin effects. Here we experimentally simulate non-Hermitian quasicrystals using photonic quantum walks. Using dynamic observables, we demonstrate that the system can transit from a delocalized, PT-symmetry broken phase that features non-Hermitian skin effects, to a localized, PT-symmetry unbroken phase with no non-Hermitian skin effects. The measured critical point is consistent with the theoretical prediction through a spectral winding number, confirming the topological origin of the phase transition. Polarization beam splitter (PBS) is a crucial photonic element to separately extract transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations from the propagating light fields. Here, we propose a concise, continuously tunable and all-optical partial PBS in the vector optomechanical system which contains two orthogonal polarized cavity modes with degenerate frequency. The results show that one can manipulate the polarization states of different output fields by tuning the polarization angle of the pumping field and the system function as partial PBS when the pump laser polarizes vertically or horizontally. As a significant application of the tunable PBS, we propose a scheme of implementing quantum walks in resonator arrays without the aid of other auxiliary systems. Furthermore, we investigate the optomechanically induced Faraday effect in the vector optomechanical system which enables arbitrary tailoring of the input lights and the behaviors of polarization angles of the output fields in the under couple, critical couple, and over couple regimes. Our findings prove the optomechanical system is a potential platform to manipulate the polarization states in multimode resonators and boost the process of applications related to polarization modulation., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Disorder and non-Hermiticity dramatically impact the topological and localization properties of a quantum system, giving rise to intriguing quantum states of matter. The rich interplay of disorder, non-Hermiticity, and topology is epitomized by the recently proposed non-Hermitian topological Anderson insulator that hosts a plethora of exotic phenomena. Here we experimentally simulate the non-Hermitian topological Anderson insulator using disordered photonic quantum walks, and characterize its localization and topological properties. In particular, we focus on the competition between Anderson localization induced by random disorder, and the non-Hermitian skin effect under which all eigenstates are squeezed toward the boundary. The two distinct localization mechanisms prompt a non-monotonous change in profile of the Lyapunov exponent, which we experimentally reveal through dynamic observables. We then probe the disorder-induced topological phase transitions, and demonstrate their biorthogonal criticality. Non-Bloch topological invariants preserve the bulk-boundary correspondence in non-Hermitian topological systems, and are a key concept in the contemporary study of non-Hermitian topology. Here we report the dynamic detection of non-Bloch topological invariants in single-photon quantum walks, revealed through the biorthogonal chiral displacement, and crosschecked with the dynamic spin textures in the generalized quasimomentum-time domain following a quantum quench. Both detection schemes are robust against symmetry-preserving disorders, and yield consistent results with theoretical predictions. Our experiments are performed far away from any boundaries, and therefore underline non-Bloch topological invariants as intrinsic properties of the system that persist in the thermodynamic limit. In conventional quantum mechanics, quantum no-deleting and no-cloning theorems indicate that two different and nonorthogonal states cannot be perfectly and deterministically deleted and cloned, respectively. Here, we investigate the quantum deleting and cloning in a pseudo-unitary system. We first present a pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian with real eigenvalues in a two-qubit system. By using the pseudo-unitary operators generated from this pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we show that it is possible to delete and clone a class of two different and nonorthogonal states, and it can be generalized to arbitrary two different and nonorthogonal pure qubit states. Furthermore, state discrimination, which is strongly related to quantum no-cloning theorem, is also discussed. Last but not least, we simulate the pseudo-unitary operators in conventional quantum mechanics with post-selection, and obtain the success probability of simulations. Pseudo-unitary operators are implemented with a limited efficiency due to the post-selections. Thus, the success probabilities of deleting and cloning in the simulation by conventional quantum mechanics are less than unity, which maintain the quantum no-deleting and no-cloning theorems., Comment: 6 pages

Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry give rise to exceptional points (EPs) with exceptional properties that arise due to the coalescence of eigenvectors. Such systems have been extensively explored in the classical domain, where second or higher order EPs have been proposed or realized. In contrast, quantum information studies of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems have been confined to systems with a two-dimensional Hilbert space. Here by using a single-photon interferometry setup, we simulate quantum dynamics of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system across a fourth-order exceptional point. By tracking the coherent, non-unitary evolution of the density matrix of the system in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry unbroken and broken regions, we observe the entropy dynamics for both the entire system, and the gain and loss subsystems. Our setup is scalable to the higher-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, and our results point towards the rich dynamics and critical properties., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally simulate in a photonic setting non-Hermitian (NH) metals characterized by the topological properties of their nodal band structures. Implementing nonunitary time evolution in reciprocal space followed by interferometric measurements, we probe the complex eigenenergies of the corresponding NH Bloch Hamiltonians, and study in detail the topology of their exceptional lines (ELs), the NH counterpart of nodal lines in Hermitian systems. We focus on two distinct types of NH metals: two-dimensional systems with symmetry-protected ELs, and three-dimensional systems possessing symmetry-independent topological ELs in the form of knots. While both types feature open Fermi surfaces, we experimentally observe their distinctions by analyzing the impact of symmetry-breaking perturbations on the topology of ELs., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Parity-time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonians have widespread significance in non-Hermitian physics. A PT-symmetric Hamiltonian can exhibit distinct phases with either real or complex eigenspectrum, while the transition points in between, the so-called exceptional points, give rise to a host of critical behaviors that holds great promise for applications. For spatially periodic non-Hermitian systems, PT symmetries are commonly characterized and observed in line with the Bloch band theory, with exceptional points dwelling in the Brillouin zone. Here, in nonunitary quantum walks of single photons, we uncover a novel family of exceptional points beyond this common wisdom. These "non-Bloch exceptional points" originate from the accumulation of bulk eigenstates near boundaries, known as the non-Hermitian skin effect, and inhabit a generalized Brillouin zone. Our finding opens the avenue toward a generalized PT-symmetry framework, and reveals the intriguing interplay between PT symmetry and non-Hermitian skin effect., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Non-Hermitian descriptions of quantum matter have seen impressive progress recently, with major advances in understanding central aspects such as their topological properties or the physics of exceptional points, the non-Hermitian counterpart of critical points. Here, we use single-photon interferometry to reconstruct the non-Hermitian Kibble-Zurek mechanism and its distinct scaling behavior for exceptional points, by simulating the defect production upon performing slow parameter ramps. Importantly, we are able to realise also higher-order exceptional points, providing experimental access to their theoretically predicted characteristic Kibble-Zurek scaling behaviour. Our work represents a crucial step in increasing the experimental complexity of non-Hermitian quantum time-evolution. Quantum machine learning aspires to overcome intractability that currently limits its applicability to practical problems. However, quantum machine learning itself is limited by low effective dimensions achievable in state-of-the-art experiments. Here we demonstrate highly successful classifications of real-life images using photonic qubits, combining a quantum tensor-network representation of hand-written digits and entanglement-based optimization. Specifically, we focus on binary classification for hand-written zeroes and ones, whose features are cast into the tensor-network representation, further reduced by optimization based on entanglement entropy and encoded into two-qubit photonic states. We then demonstrate image classification with a high success rate exceeding 98%, through successive gate operations and projective measurements. Although we work with photons, our approach is amenable to other physical realizations such as nitrogen-vacancy centers, nuclear spins and trapped ions, and our scheme can be scaled to efficient multi-qubit encodings of features in the tensor-product representation, thereby setting the stage for quantum-enhanced multi-class classification., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We demonstrate one-sided device-independent self-testing of any pure entangled two-qubit state based on a fine-grained steering inequality. The maximum violation of a fine-grained steering inequality can be used to witness certain steerable correlations, which certify all pure two-qubit entangled states. Our experimental results identify which particular pure two-qubit entangled state has been self-tested and which measurement operators are used on the untrusted side. Furthermore, we analytically derive the robustness bound of our protocol, enabling our subsequent experimental verification of robustness through state tomography. The canonical Robertson-Schr\"{o}dinger uncertainty relation provides a loose bound for the product of variances of two non-commuting observables. Recently, several tight forward and reverse uncertainty relations have been proved which go beyond the traditional uncertainty relations. Here we experimentally test multifold of state-dependent uncertainty relations for the product as well as the sum of variances of two incompatible observables for photonic qutrits. These uncertainty relations are independent of any optimization and still tighter than the Robertson-Schr\"{o}dinger uncertainty relation and other ones found in current literatures. For the first time, we also test the state-dependent reverse uncertainty relations for the sum of variances of two incompatible observables, which implies another unique feature of preparation uncertainty in quantum mechanics. The recently reported superconductivity 9-15 K in Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2/SrTiO3 heterostructures that were fabricated by a soft-chemical topotactic reduction approach based on precursor Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 thin films deposited on SrTiO3 substrates, has excited an immediate surge of research interest. To explore an alternative physical path instead of chemical reduction for realizing superconductivity in this compound, using pulsed laser deposition, we systematically fabricated 63 Nd0.8Sr0.2NiOx (NSNO) thin films at a wide range of oxygen partial pressures on various different oxide substrates. Transport measurements did not find any signature of superconductivity in all the 63 thin-film samples. With reducing the oxygen content in the NSNO films by lowering the deposition oxygen pressure, the NSNO films are getting more resistive and finally become insulating. Furthermore, we tried to cap a 20-nm-thick amorphous LaAlO3 layer on a Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO3 thin film deposited at a high oxygen pressure of 150 mTorr to create oxygen vacancies on its surface and did not succeed in higher conductivity either. Our experimental results together with the recent report on the absence of superconductivity in synthesized bulk Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 crystals suggest that the chemical reduction approach could be unique for yielding superconductivity in NSNO/SrTiO3 heterostructures. We experimentally realize a nonlinear quantum protocol on single-photon qubits with linear optical elements and appropriate measurements. The quantum nonlinearity is induced by post-selecting the polarization qubit based on a measurement result obtained on the spatial degree of freedom of the single photon which plays the role of a second qubit. Initially, both qubits are prepared in the same quantum state and an appropriate two-qubit unitary transformation entangles them before the measurement on the spatial part. We analyze the result by quantum state tomography on the polarization degree of freedom. We then demonstrate the usefulness of the protocol for quantum state discrimination by iteratively applying it on either one of two slightly different quantum states which rapidly converge to different orthogonal states by the iterative dynamics. Bulk-boundary correspondence, a central principle in topological matter relating bulk topological invariants to edge states, breaks down in a generic class of non-Hermitian systems that have so far eluded experimental effort. Here we theoretically predict and experimentally observe non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence, a fundamental generalization of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence, in discrete-time non-unitary quantum-walk dynamics of single photons. We experimentally demonstrate photon localizations near boundaries even in the absence of topological edge states, thus confirming the non-Hermitian skin effect. Facilitated by our experimental scheme of edge-state reconstruction, we directly measure topological edge states, which match excellently with non-Bloch topological invariants calculated from localized bulk-state wave functions. Our work unequivocally establishes the non-Hermitian bulk-boundary correspondence as a general principle underlying non-Hermitian topological systems, and paves the way for a complete understanding of topological matter in open systems., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Topological edge states arise in parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric non-unitary quantum dynamics but have so far only been discussed in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-unbroken regime. Here we report the experimental detection of robust topological edge states in one-dimensional photonic quantum walks with spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, thus establishing the existence of topological phenomena therein. We theoretically prove and experimentally confirm that the global Berry phase in non-unitary quantum-walk dynamics unambiguously defines topological invariants of the system in both the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-unbroken and broken regimes. Conserved quantities such as energy or the electric charge of a closed system, or the Runge-Lenz vector in Kepler dynamics are determined by its global, local, or accidental symmetries. They were instrumental to advances such as the prediction of neutrinos in the (inverse) beta decay process and the development of self-consistent approximate methods for isolated or thermal many-body systems. In contrast, little is known about conservation laws and their consequences in open systems. Recently, a special class of these systems, called parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric systems, has been intensely explored for their remarkable properties that are absent in their closed counterparts. A complete characterization and observation of conserved quantities in these systems and their consequences is still lacking. Here we present a complete set of conserved observables for a broad class of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and experimentally demonstrate their properties using single-photon linear optical circuit. By simulating the dynamics of a four-site system across a fourth-order exceptional point, we measure its four conserved quantities and demonstrate their consequences. Our results spell out non-local conservation laws in non-unitary dynamics and provide key elements that will underpin self-consistent analysis of non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems that are forthcoming., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We experimentally simulate non-unitary quantum dynamics using a single-photon interferometric network and study the information flow between a parity-time (PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian system and its environment. We observe oscillations of quantum-state distinguishability and complete information retrieval in the PT-symmetry-unbroken regime. We then characterize in detail critical phenomena of the information flow near the exceptional point separating the PT-unbroken and -broken regimes, and demonstrate power-law behavior in key quantities such as the distinguishability and the recurrence time. We also reveal how the critical phenomena are affected by symmetry and initial conditions. Finally, introducing an ancilla as an environment and probing quantum entanglement between the system and the environment, we confirm that the observed information retrieval is induced by a finite-dimensional entanglement partner in the environment. Topological matter exhibits exotic properties yet phases characterized by large topological invariants are difficult to implement, despite rapid experimental progress. A promising route toward higher topological invariants is via engineered Floquet systems, particularly in photonics, where flexible control holds the potential of extending the study of conventional topological matter to novel regimes. Here we implement a one-dimensional photonic quantum walk to explore large winding numbers. By introducing partial measurements and hence loss into the system, we detect winding numbers of three and four in multi-step non-unitary quantum walks, which agree well with theoretical predictions. Moreover, by probing statistical moments of the walker, we identify locations of topological phase transitions in the system, and reveal the breaking of pseudo-unitary near topological phase boundaries. Topology in quench dynamics gives rise to intriguing dynamic topological phenomena, which are intimately connected to the topology of static Hamiltonians yet challenging to probe experimentally. Here we experimentally detect momentum-time skyrmions in parity-time (PT)-symmetric non-unitary quench dynamics, which are protected by dynamic Chern numbers defined for the emergent momentum-time manifold. Specifically, we experimentally simulate non-unitary quench dynamics of PT-symmetric topological systems using single-photon discrete-time quantum walks, and demonstrate emergence of skyrmions by constructing the time-dependent non-Hermitian density matrix via direct measurements in position space. Signaled by non-analyticities in the time evolution of physical observables, dynamic quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) emerge in quench dynamics of topological systems and possess an interesting geometric origin captured by dynamic topological order parameters (DTOPs). In this work, we report the experimental study of DQPTs using discrete-time quantum walks of single photons. We simulate quench dynamics between distinct Floquet topological phases using quantum-walk dynamics, and experimentally characterize DQPTs and the underlying DTOPs through interference-based measurements. The versatile photonic quantum-walk platform further allows us to experimentally investigate DQPTs for mixed states and in parity-time-symmetric non-unitary dynamics for the first time. We identify emergent topological phenomena such as dynamic Chern numbers and dynamic quantum phase transitions in quantum quenches of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. Their occurrence in the non-unitary dynamics are intimately connected with fixed points in the Brillouin zone, where the states do not evolve in time. We construct a theoretical formalism for characterizing topological properties in non-unitary dynamics within the framework of biorthogonal quantum mechanics, and prove the existence of fixed points for quenches between distinct static topological phases in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-preserving regime. We then reveal the interesting relation between different dynamic topological phenomena through the momentum-time spin texture characterizing the dynamic process. We realise a quantum three-level system with photons distributed among three different spatial and polarization modes. Ambiguous measurement of the state of the qutrit are realised by blocking one out for the three modes at any one time. Using these measurements we construct a test of a Leggett-Garg inequality as well as tests of no-signalling-in-time for the measurements. We observe violations of the Leggett-Garg inequality that can not be accounted for in terms of signalling. Moreover, we tailor the qutrit dynamics such that both ambiguous and unambiguous measurements are simultaneously non-signalling, which is an essential step for the justification of the use of ambiguous measurements in Leggett-Garg tests., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We report the experimental detection of bulk topological invariants in nonunitary discrete-time quantum walks with single photons. The nonunitarity of the quantum dynamics is enforced by periodically performing partial measurements on the polarization of the walker photon, which effectively introduces loss to the dynamics. The topological invariant of the nonunitary quantum walk is manifested in the quantized average displacement of the walker, which is probed by monitoring the photon loss. We confirm the topological properties of the system by observing localized edge states at the boundary of regions with different topological invariants. Quantum metrology overcomes standard precision limits and plays a central role in science and technology. Practically it is vulnerable to imperfections such as decoherence. Here, we demonstrate quantum metrology for noisy channels such that entanglement with ancillary qubits enhances the quantum Fisher information for phase estimation but not otherwise. Our photonic experiment covers a range of noise for various types of channels, including for two randomly alternating channels such that assisted entanglement fails for each noisy channel individually. We have simulated noisy channels by implementing space-multiplexed dual interferometers with quantum photonic inputs. We have demonstrated the advantage of entanglement-assisted protocols in phase estimation experiment run with either single-probe or multi-probe approach. These results establish that entanglement with ancillae is a valuable approach for delivering quantum-enhanced metrology. We present the result of an unbiased CO survey in Galactic range of 34.75$^{\circ}\leq$l$\leq$ 45.25$^{\circ}$ and -5.25$^{\circ}\leq$b$\leq$ 5.25$^{\circ}$, and velocity range beyond the Outer arm. A total of 168 molecular clouds (MCs) are identified within the Extreme Outer Galaxy~(EOG) region, and 31 of these MCs are associated with 13CO emission. However, none of them show significant C18O emission under current detection limit. The typical size and mass of these MCs are 5~pc and 3$\times$10$^{3}M_{\sun}$, implying the lack of large and massive MCs in the EOG region. Similar to MCs in the outer Galaxy, the velocity dispersions of EOG clouds are also correlated with their sizes, however, are well displaced below the scaling relationship defined by the inner Galaxy MCs. These MCs with a median Galactocentric radius of 12.6 kpc, show very different distributions from those of the MCs in the Outer arm published in our previous paper, while roughly follow the Outer Scutum-Centaurus arm defined by Dame & Thaddeus 2011. This result may provide a robust evidence for the existence of the Outer Scutum-Centaurus arm. The lower limit of the total mass of this segment is about 2.7$\times$10$^5$ $M_{\sun}$, which is about one magnitude lower than that of the Outer arm. The mean thickness of gaseous disk is about 1.45$^{\circ}$ or 450~pc, and the scale height is about 1.27$^{\circ}$ or 400~pc above the $b=0^{\circ}$ plane. The warp traced by CO emission is very obvious in the EOG region and its amplitude is consistent with the predictions by other warp models using different tracers, such as dust, HI and stellar components of our Galaxy., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJS

Network centrality has important implications well beyond its role in physical and information transport analysis; as such, various quantum walk-based algorithms have been proposed for measuring network vertex centrality. In this work, we propose a continuous-time quantum walk algorithm for determining vertex centrality, and show that it generalizes to arbitrary graphs via a statistical analysis of randomly generated scale-free and Erd\H{o}s-R\'enyi networks. As a proof of concept, the algorithm is detailed on a 4-vertex star graph and physically implemented via linear optics, using spatial and polarization degrees of freedoms of single photons.
