In non-Hermitian open quantum systems, such as polariton condensates, local tailoring of gains and losses opens up an interesting possibility to realize functional optical elements. Here, we demonstrate that deliberately introducing losses via a photonic defect, realized by reducing the quality factor of a DBR mirror locally within an ultrahigh-quality microcavity, may be utilized to create directed polariton currents towards the defect. We discuss the role of polariton-polariton interactions in the process and how to tailor the effective decay time of a polariton condensate via coupling to the defect. In recent years, quantum information science has made significant progress, leading to a multitude of quantum protocols for the most diverse applications. States carrying resources such as quantum coherence are a key component for these protocols. In this study, we optimize the quantum coherence of a nonresonantly excited exciton-polariton condensate of long living polaritons by minimizing the condensate's interaction with the surrounding reservoir of excitons and free carriers. By combining experimental phase space data with a displaced thermal state model, we observe how quantum coherence builds up as the system is driven above the condensation threshold. Our findings demonstrate that a spatial separation between the condensate and the reservoir enhances the state's maximum quantum coherence directly beyond the threshold. We report the canonical properties of Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons, seen previously in many low-temperature experiments, at room temperature in a GaAs/AlGaAs structure. These effects include a nonlinear energy shift of the polaritons, showing that they are not non-interacting photons, and dramatic line narrowing due to coherence, giving coherent emission with spectral width of 0.24 meV at room temperature with no external stabilization. This opens up the possibility of room temperature nonlinear optical devices based on polariton condensation.

We present a careful calibration of the exciton fraction of polaritons in high-$Q$ ($\sim 300,000$), long-lifetime ($\sim 300$ ps), GaAs/AlGaAs microcavities.This is a crucial parameter for many-body theories which include the polariton-polariton interactions.It is much harder to establish this number in high-$Q$ structures compared to low-$Q$ structures, because the upper polariton is nearly invisible in high-$Q$ cavities.We present a combination of photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation, and reflectivity measurements to highly constrain the fit model, and compare the results of this model to the results from low-$Q$ structures.We present a fitted curve of exciton fraction as a function of the lower polariton energy for multiple samples which have been used in prior experiments., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We have created a spatially homogeneous polariton condensate in thermal equilibrium, up to very high condensate fraction. Under these conditions, we have measured the coherence as a function of momentum, and determined the total coherent fraction of this boson system from very low density up to density well above the condensation transition. These measurements reveal a consistent power law for the coherent fraction as a function of the total density over nearly three orders of its magnitude. The same power law is seen in numerical simulations solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the equilibrium coherence. This power law has not been predicted by prior analytical theories.

Recently, high-order sideband polarimetry has been established as an experimental method that links the polarization of sidebands to an interference of Bloch wavefunctions. However, the robustness of sideband polarizations to increasing dephasing remains to be explored. Here, we investigate the dependence of high-order sideband generation in bulk gallium arsenide on dephasing by tuning temperature. We find that the intensities of the sidebands, but not their polarizations, depend strongly on temperature. Using our polarimetry method, we are able to isolate the contributions of electron-heavy hole (HH) and electron-light hole (LH) pairs to sideband intensities, and separately extract the nonequilibrium dephasing coefficients associated with the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons and acoustic (A) phonons for each species of electron-hole pair. We find that $\Gamma_{\text{HH},\text{A}} = 6.1 \pm 1.6$ $\mu$eV/K, $\Gamma_{\text{LH},\text{A}} < 1.5$ $\mu$eV/K, $\Gamma_{\text{HH},\text{LO}} = 14 \pm 3$ meV, and $\Gamma_{\text{LH},\text{LO}} = 30 \pm 3$ meV., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report that the polarizations of sidebands emitted from bulk gallium arsenide (GaAs) driven by a strong terahertz (THz) laser while probed with a weak near-infrared laser can be viewed as interferograms from a Michelson-like interferometer for Bloch waves. A simple analytical model is introduced to calculate the difference in quantum mechanical phases accumulated by Bloch waves associated with electron-heavy hole and electron-light hole pairs in their respective interferometer arms. The measured and calculated spectra are in good quantitative agreement, including scaling with THz field strength. Phase fluctuations determine the low-energy properties of quantum condensates. However, at the condensation threshold, both density and phase fluctuations are relevant. While strong emphasis has been given to the investigation of phase fluctuations, which dominate the physics of the quantum system away from the critical point -- number fluctuations have been much less explored, even in thermal equilibrium. In this work, we report experimental observation and theoretical description of fluctuations in a circularly-confined non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of polaritons near the condensation threshold. We observe critical fluctuations, which combine the number fluctuations of a single-mode condensate state and competition between different states. The latter are analogous to mode hopping in photon lasers. Our theoretical analysis indicates that this phenomenon is of a quantum character, while classical noise of the pump is not sufficient to explain the experiments. The manifestation of a critical quantum state competition unlocks new possibilities for the study of condensate formation while linking to practical realizations in photonic lasers.

We report on non-linear transport phenomena at high filling factor and DC current-induced electronic hydrodynamics in an ultra-high mobility (mu=20x10^6 cm^2/Vs) two-dimensional electron gas in a narrow (15 micron wide) GaAs/AlGaAs Hall bar for DC current densities reaching 0.67 A/m. The various phenomena and the boundaries between the phenomena are captured together in a two-dimensional differential resistivity map as a function of magnetic field (up to 250 mT) and DC current. This map, which resembles a phase diagram, demarcate distinct regions dominated by Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations (and phase inversion of these oscillations) around zero DC current; negative magnetoresistance and a double-peak feature (both ballistic in origin) around zero field; and Hall field-induced resistance oscillations (HIROs) radiating out from the origin. From a detailed analysis of the data near zero field, we show that increasing the DC current suppresses the electron-electron scattering length that drives a growing hydrodynamic contribution to both the differential longitudinal and transverse (Hall) resistivities. Our approach to induce hydrodynamics with DC current differs from the more usual approach of changing the temperature. We also find a significant (factor of two to four) difference between the quantum lifetime extracted from SdH oscillations, and the quantum lifetime extracted from HIROs. In addition to observing HIRO peaks up to the seventh order, we observe an unexpected HIRO-like feature close to mid-way between the first-order and the second-order HIRO maxima at high DC current.

Equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation of exciton-polaritons, demonstrated with a long-lifetime microcavity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 016602 (2017)], has proven that driven-dissipative systems can undergo thermodynamic phase transitions in the limit where the quasiparticle lifetime exceeds the thermalization time. Here, we identify the role of dimensionality and polariton interactions in determining the degree of thermalization in optically generated traps. To distinguish the effect of trapping from interactions and lifetimes, we measured the polariton distribution under four nonresonant Gaussian pumps in a square geometry and compared it with polariton distributions measured with each pump individually. We found that significant redistribution of polaritons arises by trapping and modification of the density of states. Surprisingly efficient polariton-polariton scattering below the condensation threshold is evidenced by the depletion of the inflection-point polaritons. Our work provides a deeper understanding of polariton distributions and their interactions under various geometries of optically generated potentials.

It is now routine to make Bose-Einstein condensates of polaritons with long enough lifetime and low enough disorder to travel ballistically for hundreds of microns in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) wires. We present observations of a polariton condensate injected at one point in a quasi-1D ring, with a well-defined initial velocity and direction. A clear precession of the circular polarization is seen, which arises from an effective spin-orbit coupling term in the Hamiltonian. Our theoretical model accurately predicts the experimentally observed behavior, and shows that "zitterbewegung" behavior plays a role in the motion of the polaritons., Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev. Impacts of domain textures on low-lying neutral excitations in the bulk of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) systems are probed by resonant inelastic light scattering. We demonstrate that large domains of quantum fluids support long-wavelength neutral collective excitations with well-defined wave vector (momentum) dispersion that could be interpreted by theories for uniform phases. Access to dispersive low-lying neutral collective modes in large domains of FQHE fluids such as long wavelength magnetorotons at filling factor v=1/3 offer significant experimental access to strong electron correlation physics in the FQHE., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, and Supplemental Material

Flat bands near M points in the Brillouin zone are key features of honeycomb symmetry in artificial graphene (AG) where electrons may condense into novel correlated phases. Here we report the observation of van Hove singularity doublet of AG in GaAs quantum well transistors, which presents the evidence of flat bands in semiconductor AG. Two emerging peaks in photoluminescence spectra tuned by backgate voltages probe the singularity doublet of AG flat bands, and demonstrate their accessibility to the Fermi level. As the Fermi level crosses the doublet, the spectra display dramatic stability against electron density, indicating interplays between electron-electron interactions and honeycomb symmetry. A new reentrant insulating phase (RIP) in low magnetic fields has been reported in the literature in strongly interacting 2D carrier systems and was suggested to be related to the formation of a Wigner crystal [e.g. Qiu et al, PRL 108, 106404 (2012)]. We have studied the transformation between the metallic liquid phase and the low field RIP in a dilute 2D hole system with large interaction parameter $r_s$ (~20-30) in GaAs quantum wells. Instead of a sharp transition, increasing density (or lowering $r_s$) drives the RIP into a state where an incipient RIP coexists with the metallic 2D hole liquid. The non-trivial temperature dependent resistivity and the in-plane magnetic field induced enhancement of the RIP highlight the competition between two phases and the essential role of spin in this mixture phase, and are consistent with the Pomeranchuk effect in a mixture of Wigner crystal and Fermi liquid., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1509.07463

We create laterally large and low disorder quantum well based quantum dots to study single electron additions to two dimensional electron systems (2DES). Electrons tunnel into these dots across an AlGaAs tunnel barrier from a single $n+$ electrode. Using single-electron capacitance spectroscopy in a dilution refrigerator, we identify capacitance peaks for the addition of the first electron to a dot and record subsequent peaks in the addition spectrum up to occupancies of thousands of electrons. Here, we report two remarkable phenomena that occur in the filling factor range $\nu=2$ to $\nu=5$ while selectively probing electron additions to the edge states of the dot: (1) Coulomb blockade peaks arise from the entrance of two electrons rather than one; (2) at and near filling factor 5/2 and at fixed gate voltage, these double-height peaks appear uniformly with a periodicity of $h/2e$. At other filling factors in the range $\nu=2$ to $\nu=5$, the mean periodicity for the twice-height electron peaks remains $h/2e$, but the twice-height peaks are instead further bunched into pairs of double-height peaks, with pairs spaced $h/e$ apart. The unusual two-electron Coulomb blockade peaks suggest a novel pair tunneling effect that involves electron correlations that arise in the quantum dot, with spectra at $\nu=5/2$ identical to those previously only seen in superconducting dots., Comment: Added discussion to "bunching phenomena" section in supplement

The Higgs amplitude mode is a collective excitation studied and observed in a broad class of matter, including superconductors, charge density waves, antiferromagnets, 3He p-wave superfluid, and ultracold atomic condensates. In all the observations reported thus far, the amplitude mode was excited by perturbing the condensate out of equilibrium. Studying an exciton-polariton condensate, here we report the first observation of this mode purely driven by intrinsic quantum fluctuations without such perturbations. By using an ultrahigh quality microcavity and a Raman spectrometer to maximally reject photoluminescence from the condensate, we observe weak but distinct photoluminescence at energies below the condensate emission. We identify this as the so-called ghost branches of the amplitude mode arising from quantum depletion of the condensate into this mode. These energies, as well as the overall structure of the photoluminescence spectra, are in good agreement with our theoretical analysis.

Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW) have been utilized to investigate the properties of a two-dimensional electron system, subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field and monochromatic microwave radiation, in the regime where the so-called microwave-induced zero-resistance states form. Contrary to conventional magneto-transport in Hall bar and van der Pauw geometries, the collimated SAW beam probes only the bulk of the electronic system exposed to this wave. Clear signatures appear in the SAW propagation velocity corroborating that neither contacts, nor sample edges are a root source for their emergence. By virtue of the directional nature of this probing method and with the assistance of theoretical modelling, we were also able to demonstrate that the SAW response depends on the angle between its propagation vector and the orientation of domains which spontaneously form when zero-resistance is observed in transport. This confirms in unprecedented manner the formation of an inhomogeneous phase under these non-equilibrium conditions.

Collective modes of exotic quantum fluids reveal underlying physical mechanisms responsible for emergent complex quantum ground states. We observe unexpected new collective modes in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime: intra-Landau-level plasmons in the second Landau level measured by resonant inelastic light scattering. The plasmons herald rotational-symmetry-breaking phases in tilted magnetic fields and reveal long-range translational invariance in these phases. The fascinating dependence of plasmon features on filling factor provide new insights on interplays between topological quantum Hall order and nematic electronic liquid crystal phases. A marked intensity minimum in the plasmon spectrum at Landau level filling factor v = 5/2 strongly suggests that this paired state, which could support non-Abelian excitations, overwhelms competing nematic phases, unveiling the robustness of the 5/2 superfluid state for small tilt angles. At v = 7/3, a sharp and strong plasmon peak that links to emerging macroscopic coherence supports the proposed model of a FQH nematic state at this filling factor.

Negative longitudinal magnetoresistances (NLMRs) have been recently observed in a variety of topological materials and often considered to be associated with Weyl fermions that have a defined chirality. Here we report NLMRs in non-Weyl GaAs quantum wells. In the absence of a magnetic field the quantum wells show a transition from semiconducting-like to metallic behaviour with decreasing temperature. We observed pronounced NLMRs up to 9 Tesla at temperatures above the transition and weak NLMRs in low magnetic fields at temperatures close to the transition and below 5 K. The observed NLMRs show various types of magnetic field behaviour resembling those reported in topological materials. We attribute them to microscopic disorder and use a phenomenological three-resistor model to account for their various features. Our results showcase a new contribution of microscopic disorder in the occurrence of novel phenomena. They may stimulate further work on tuning electronic properties via disorder/defect nano-engineering.

The interaction between aligned dipoles is long-ranged and highly anisotropic: it changes from repulsive to attractive depending on the relative positions of the dipoles. We report on the observation of the attractive component of the dipolar coupling between excitonic dipoles in stacked semiconductor bilayers. We show that the presence of a dipolar exciton fluid in one bilayer modifies the spatial distribution and increases the binding energy of excitonic dipoles in a vertically remote layer. The binding energy changes are explained by a many-body polaron model describing the deformation of the exciton cloud due to its interaction with a remote dipolar exciton. The results open the way for the observation of theoretically predicted new and exotic collective phases, the realization of interacting dipolar lattices in semiconductor systems as well as for engineering and sensing their collective excitations., Comment: 11 Pages, 9 Figures

In this paper, we see a strong effect of the injected current on the light emission from the polariton condensate in an n-i-n structure, when we monitor the luminescence intensity under applied bias at various pump powers. We present here three thresholds for nonlinear increase of the intensity. We show that small changes of the incoherent injected current lead to stimulated enhancement of the coherent light emission from free carriers. One of the most intriguing and fundamental properties of topological materials is the correspondence between the conducting edge states and the gapped bulk spectrum. So far, it has been impossible to access the full evolution of edge states with critical parameters such as magnetic field due to poor resolution, remnant bulk conductivity, or disorder. Here, we use a GaAs cleaved edge quantum wire to perform momentum-resolved tunneling spectroscopy. This allows us to probe the evolution of the chiral quantum Hall edge states and their positions from the sample edge with unprecedented precision from very low magnetic fields all the way to high fields where depopulation occurs. We present consistent analytical and numerical models, inferring the edge states from the well known bulk spectrum, finding excellent agreement with the experiment -- thus providing direct evidence for the bulk to edge correspondence. We measure the spin-resolved transport of dipolar excitons in a biased GaAs double quantum well structure. From these measurements we extract both spin lifetime and mobility of the excitons. We find that below a temperature of $4.8$K, there is a sharp increase in the spin lifetime of the excitons, together with a sharp reduction in their mobility. Below a critical power the spin lifetime increases with increasing mobility and density, while above the critical power the opposite trend is observed. We interpret this transition as an evidence of the interplay between two different spin dephasing mechanisms: at low mobility the dephasing is dominated by the hyperfine interaction with the lattice nuclei spins, while at higher mobility the spin-orbit interaction dominates, and a Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation takes over. The excitation power and temperature regime where the hyperfine interaction induced spin dephasing is observed correlates with the regime where a dark dipolar quantum liquid was reported recently on a similar sample.

The single-particle spectral function measures the density of electronic states (DOS) in a material as a function of both momentum and energy, providing central insights into phenomena such as superconductivity and Mott insulators. While scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and other tunneling methods have provided partial spectral information, until now only angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has permitted a comprehensive determination of the spectral function of materials in both momentum and energy. However, ARPES operates only on electronic systems at the material surface and cannot work in the presence of applied magnetic fields. Here, we demonstrate a new method for determining the full momentum and energy resolved electronic spectral function of a two-dimensional (2D) electronic system embedded in a semiconductor. In contrast with ARPES, the technique remains operational in the presence of large externally applied magnetic fields and functions for electronic systems with zero electrical conductivity or with zero electron density. It provides a direct high-resolution and high-fidelity probe of the dispersion and dynamics of the interacting 2D electron system. By ensuring the system of interest remains under equilibrium conditions, we uncover delicate signatures of many-body effects involving electron-phonon interactions, plasmons, polarons, and a novel phonon analog of the vacuum Rabi splitting in atomic systems.

Some theories predict that the filling factor 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state can exhibit non-Abelian statistics, which makes it a candidate for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. Although the non-Abelian Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian state, are the most plausible wave functions for the 5/2 state, there are a number of alternatives with either Abelian or non-Abelian statistics. Recent experiments suggest that the tunneling exponents are more consistent with an Abelian state rather than a non-Abelian state. Here, we present edge-current-tunneling experiments in geometrically confined quantum point contacts, which indicate that Abelian and non-Abelian states compete at filling factor 5/2. Our results are consistent with a transition from an Abelian state to a non-Abelian state in a single quantum point contact when the confinement is tuned. Our observation suggests that there is an intrinsic non-Abelian 5/2 ground state, but that the appropriate confinement is necessary to maintain it. This observation is important not only for understanding the physics of the 5/2 state, but also for the design of future topological quantum computation devices.

Spatially indirect excitons in semiconducting double quantum wells have been shown to exhibit rich collective many-body behavior that result from the nature of the extended dipole-dipole interactions between particles. For many spectroscopic studies of the emission from a system of such indirect excitons, it is crucial to separate the single particle properties of the excitons from the many-body effects arising from their mutual interactions. In particular, knowledge of the relation between the emission energy of indirect excitons and their radiative lifetime could be highly beneficial for control, manipulation, and analysis of such systems. Here we study a simple analytic approximate relation between the radiative lifetime of indirect excitons and their emission energy. We show, both numerically and experimentally, the validity and the limits of this approximate relation. This relation between the emission energy and the lifetime of indirect excitons can be used to tune and determine their lifetime and their resulting dynamics without the need of directly measuring it, and as a tool for design of indirect exciton based devices., Comment: * Added references. * Corrected the Al content mentioned as the sample's and used in Sec. We demonstrate condensation of microcavity polaritons with a very sharp threshold occuring at two orders of magnitude lower pump intensity than previous demonstrations of condensation. The long cavity-lifetime and trapping and pumping geometries are crucial to the realization of this low threshold. Polariton condensation, or "polariton lasing" has long been proposed as a promising source of coherent light at lower threshold than traditional lasing, and these results suggest methods to bring this threshold even lower., Comment: 4 pages, one figure, one table

Recent studies of two-photon excitation of exciton-polaritons in microcavities have considered the possibility of an allowed absorption process into the $2p$-state of the excitons which participate in the polariton effect. Here we report time-resolved measurements of two-photon excitation directly into the lower polariton states invoking the $1s$ state of the excitons. Although this process is forbidden by symmetry for light at normal incidence, it is allowed at non-zero angle of incidence due to state mixing.

Electrostatic gating is essential for defining and control of semiconducting devices. However, nano-fabrication processes required for depositing gates inevitably degrade the pristine quality of the material of interest. Examples of materials that suffer from such degradation include ultra-high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs), graphene, topological insulators, and nanowires. To preserve the pristine material properties, we have developed a flip-chip setup where gates are separated from the material by a vacuum, which allows nanoscale electrostatic gating of the material without exposing it to invasive nano-processing. An additional benefit is the vacuum between gates and material, which, unlike gate dielectrics, is free from charge traps. We demonstrate the operation and feasibility of the flip-chip setup by achieving quantum interference at integer quantum Hall states in a Fabry-P\'erot interferometer based on a GaAs/AlGaAs 2DEG. We report multistate optical switching among high-order bouncing-ball modes ("ripples") and whispering-gallerying modes ("petals") of exciton-polariton condensates in a laser-generated annular trap. By tailoring the diameter and power of the annular trap, the polariton condensate can be switched among different trapped modes, accompanied by redistribution of spatial densities and superlinear increase in the emission intensities, implying that polariton condensates in this geometry could be exploited for a multistate switch. A model based on non-Hermitian modes of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that this mode switching arises from competition between pump-induced gain and in-plane polariton loss. The parameters for reproducible switching among trapped modes have been measured experimentally, giving us a phase diagram for mode switching. Taken together, the experimental result and theoretical modeling advances our fundamental understanding of the spontaneous emergence of coherence and move us toward its practical exploitation., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities have been used to demonstrate quantum effects such as Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluity, and quantized vortices. However, in these experiments, the polaritons have not reached thermal equilibrium when they undergo the transition to a coherent state. This has prevented the verification of one of the canonical predictions for condensation, namely the phase diagram. In this work, we have created a polariton gas in a semiconductor microcavity in which the quasiparticles have a lifetime much longer than their thermalization time. This allows them to reach thermal equilibrium in a laser-generated confining trap. Their energy distributions are well fit by equilibrium Bose-Einstein distributions over a broad range of densities and temperatures from very low densities all the way up to the threshold for Bose-Einstein condensation. The good fits of the Bose-Einstein distribution over a broad range of density and temperature imply that the particles obey the predicted power law for the phase boundary of Bose-Einstein condensation.

We realize a nanoscale-area Mach-Zehnder interferometer with co-propagating quantum Hall spin-resolved edge states and demonstrate the persistence of gate-controlled quantum interference oscillations, as a function of an applied magnetic field, at relatively large temperatures. Arrays of top-gate magnetic nanofingers are used to induce a resonant charge transfer between the pair of spin-resolved edge states. To account for the pattern of oscillations measured as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage, we have developed a simple theoretical model which satisfactorily reproduces the data., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Exciton-polaritons in a microcavity are composite two-dimensional bosonic quasiparticles, arising from the strong coupling between confined light modes in a resonant planar optical cavity and excitonic transitions, typically using excitons in semiconductor quantum wells (QWs) placed at the antinodes of the same cavity. Quantum phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), quantized vortices, and macroscopic quantum states have been reported at temperatures from tens of Kelvin up to room temperatures, and polaritonic devices such as spin switches \cite{Amo2010} and optical transistors have also been reported. Many of these effects of exciton-polaritons depend crucially on the polariton-polariton interaction strength. Despite the importance of this parameter, it has been difficult to make an accurate experimental measurement, mostly because of the difficulty of determining the absolute densities of polaritons and bare excitons. Here we report the direct measurement of the polariton-polariton interaction strength in a very high-Q microcavity structure. By allowing polaritons to propagate over 40 $\mu$m to the center of a laser-generated annular trap, we are able to separate the polariton-polariton interactions from polariton-exciton interactions. The interaction strength is deduced from the energy renormalization of the polariton dispersion as the polariton density is increased, using the polariton condensation as a benchmark for the density. We find that the interaction strength is about two orders of magnitude larger than previous theoretical estimates, putting polaritons squarely into the strongly-interacting regime. The unusual electronic properties of graphene, which are a direct consequence of its two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice, have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. Creation of artificial lattices that recreate graphene's honeycomb topology, known as artificial graphene, can facilitate the investigation of graphene-like phenomena, such as the existence of massless Dirac fermions, in a tunable system. In this work, we present the fabrication of artificial graphene in an ultra-high quality GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well, with lattice period as small as 50 nm, the smallest reported so far for this type of system. Electron-beam lithography is used to define an etch mask with honeycomb geometry on the surface of the sample, and different methodologies are compared and discussed. An optimized anisotropic reactive ion etching process is developed to transfer the pattern into the AlGaAs layer and create the artificial graphene. The possible phases and the nano-scale particle correlations of two-dimensional interacting dipolar particles is a long-sought problem in many-body physics. Here we observe a spontaneous condensation of trapped two-dimensional dipolar excitons with internal spin degrees of freedom from an interacting gas into a high density, closely packed liquid state made mostly of dark dipoles. Another phase transition, into a bright, highly repulsive plasma is observed at even higher excitation powers. The dark liquid state is formed below a critical temperature $T_c \approx 4.8K$, and it is manifested by a clear spontaneous spatial condensation to a smaller and denser cloud, suggesting an attractive part to the interaction which goes beyond the purely repulsive dipole-dipole forces. Contributions from quantum mechanical fluctuations are expected to be significant in this strongly correlated, long living dark liquid. This is a new example of a two-dimensional atomic-like interacting dipolar quantum liquid, but where the coupling of light to its internal spin degrees of freedom plays a crucial role in the dynamical formation and the nature of resulting ground state., Comment: Supplementary information follows the references section

Introduction of a Josephson field effect transistor (JoFET) concept sparked active research on proximity effects in semiconductors. Induced superconductivity and electrostatic control of critical current has been demonstrated in two-dimensional gases in InAs, graphene and topological insulators, and in one-dimensional systems including quantum spin Hall edges. Recently, interest in superconductor-semiconductor interfaces was renewed by the search for Majorana fermions, which were predicted to reside at the interface. More exotic non-Abelian excitations, such as parafermions (fractional Majorana fermions) or Fibonacci fermions may be formed when fractional quantum Hall edge states interface with superconductivity. In this paper we develop transparent superconducting contacts to high mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in GaAs and demonstrate induced superconductivity across several microns. Supercurrent in a ballistic junction has been observed across 0.6 $\mu$m of 2DEG, a regime previously achieved only in point contacts but essential to the formation of well separated non-Abelian states. High critical fields ($>16$ Tesla) in NbN contacts enables investigation of a long-sought regime of an interplay between superconductivity and strongly correlated states in a 2DEG at high magnetic fields., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Correlated electron states in high mobility two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs), including charge density waves and microemulsion phases intermediate between a Fermi liquid and Wigner crystal, are predicted to exhibit complex local charge order. Existing experimental studies, however, have mainly probed these systems at micron to millimeter scales rather than directly mapping spatial organization. Scanning probes should be well-suited to study the spatial structure of these states, but high mobility 2DESs are found at buried semiconductor interfaces, beyond the reach of conventional scanning tunneling microscopy. Scanning techniques based on electrostatic coupling to the 2DES deliver important insights, but generally with resolution limited by the depth of the 2DES. In this Letter, we present our progress in developing a technique called "virtual scanning tunneling microscopy" that allows local tunneling into a high mobility 2DES. Using a specially-designed bilayer GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure where the tunnel coupling between two separate 2DESs is tunable via electrostatic gating, combined with a scanning gate, we show that the local tunneling can be controlled with sub-200 nm resolution., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We resonantly inject polaritons into a microcavity and track them in time and space as they feel a force due to the cavity gradient. This is an example of "slow reflection," as the polaritons, which can be viewed as renormalized photons, slow down to zero velocity and then move back in the opposite direction. These measurements accurately measure the lifetime of the polaritons in our samples, which is 180 $\pm$ 10 ps, corresponding to a cavity leakage time of 135 ps and a cavity $Q$ of 320,000. Such long-lived polaritons propagate millimeters in these wedge-shaped microcavities. Additionally, we generate polaritons by two-photon excitation directly into the polariton states, allowing the possibility of modulation of the two-photon absorption by a polariton condensate., Comment: 4 figures. A fabrication method for electronic quantum Hall Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPI) is presented. Our method uses a combination of e-beam lithography and low-damage dry-etching to produce the FPIs and minimize the excitation of charged traps or deposition of impurities near the device. Optimization of the quantum point contacts (QPC) is achieved via systematically varying the etch depth and monitoring the device resistance between segmented etching sessions. The etching is stopped when a desired value of resistance is obtained. Finer control of interference trajectories is obtained by the gate metallized inside the etched area by e-beam evaporation. Our approach allows for a control of the delicate potential bending near the quantum well by tuning the confining potential of the quantum point contacts., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Exciton-polaritons can be created in semiconductor microcavities. These quasiparticles act as weakly interacting bosons with very light mass, of the order of $10^{-4}$ times the vacuum electron mass. Many experiments have shown effects which can be viewed as due to a Bose-Einstein condensate, or quasicondensate, of these particles. The lifetime of the particles in most of those experiments has been of the order of a few picoseconds, leading to significant nonequilibrium effects. By increasing the cavity quality, we have made new samples with longer polariton lifetimes. With a photon lifetime on the order of 100-200 ps, polaritons in these new structures can not only come closer to reaching true thermal equilibrium, a desired feature for many researchers working in this field, but they can also travel much longer distances. We observe the polaritons to ballistically travel on the order of one millimeter, and at higher densities we see transport of a coherent condensate, or quasicondensate, over comparable distances. In this paper we report a quantitative analysis of the flow of the polaritons both in a low-density, classical regime, and in the coherent regime at higher density. Our analysis gives us a measure of the intrinsic lifetime for photon decay from the microcavity and a measure of the strength of interactions of the polaritons.

In this paper we show experimental evidence of a few correlation regimes of a cold dipolar exciton fluid, created optically in a semiconductor bilayer heterostructure. In the higher temperature regime, the average interaction energy between the particles shows a surprising temperature dependence which is an evidence for correlations beyond the mean field model. At a lower temperature, there is a sharp increase in the interaction energy of optically active excitons, accompanied by a strong reduction in their apparent population. This is an evidence for a sharp macroscopic transition to a dark state as was suggested theoretically.

We report an on-chip solid-state Mach-Zehnder interferometer operating on two-dimensional (2D) plasmonic waves at microwave frequencies. Two plasmonic paths are defined with GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron gas 80 nm below a metallic gate. The gated 2D plasmonic waves achieve a velocity of ~c/300 (c: free-space light speed). Due to this ultra-subwavelength confinement, the resolution of the 2D plasmonic interferometer is two orders of magnitude higher than that of its electromagnetic counterpart at a given frequency. This GHz proof-of-concept at cryogenic temperatures can be scaled to the THz IR range for room temperature operation, while maintaining the benefits of the ultra-subwavelength confinement., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. Magneto-luminescence studies in electron bilayers reveal the hallmarks of the even-denominator and other quantum Hall states in the intensities and energies of the inter-band optical recombination lines. In the presence of a small tunneling gap between the layers the magneto-optical emission from the lowest anti-symmetric subband, not populated in a single-electron picture, displays maxima at filling factors 1 and 2/3. These findings uncover a loss of pseudospin polarization, where the pseudospin describes the layer index degree of freedom, that is linked to an anomalous population of the anti-symmetric level due to excitonic correlations. The results demonstrate a new realm to probe the impact of inter-layer Coulomb interaction in quantum Hall bilayers.

We report new results of Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons in specially designed microcavities with very high quality factor, on the order of $10^6$, giving the polariton lifetimes of the order of 100 ps. When the polaritons are created with an incoherent pump, a dissipationless, coherent flow of the polaritons occurs over hundreds of microns, which increases as density increases. A system of electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields can be tuned to create a gapped 2D system with one dimensional channels along the edge. Interactions among these edge modes can lead to independent transport of charge and heat, even in opposite directions. Measuring the chirality and transport properties of these charge and heat modes can reveal otherwise hidden structure in the edge. Here, we heat the outer edge of such a quantum Hall system using a quantum point contact. By placing quantum dots upstream and downstream along the edge of the heater, we can measure both the chemical potential and temperature of that edge to study charge and heat transport, respectively. We find that charge is transported exclusively downstream, but heat can be transported upstream when the edge has additional structure related to fractional quantum Hall physics., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures

At high magnetic fields, where the Fermi level lies in the N=0 lowest Landau level (LL), a clean two-dimensional electron system (2DES) exhibits numerous incompressible liquid phases which display the fractional quantized Hall effect (FQHE) (Das Sarma and Pinczuk, 1997). These liquid phases do not break rotational symmetry, exhibiting resistivities which are isotropic in the plane. In contrast, at lower fields, when the Fermi level lies in the $N\ge2$ third and several higher LLs, the 2DES displays a distinctly different class of collective states. In particular, near half filling of these high LLs the 2DES exhibits a strongly anisotropic longitudinal resistance at low temperatures (Lilly et al., 1999; Du et al., 1999). These "stripe" phases, which do not exhibit the quantized Hall effect, resemble nematic liquid crystals, possessing broken rotational symmetry and orientational order (Koulakov et al., 1996; Fogler et al., 1996; Moessner and Chalker, 1996; Fradkin and Kivelson, 1999; Fradkin et al, 2010). Here we report a surprising new observation: An electronic configuration in the N=1 second LL whose resistivity tensor simultaneously displays a robust fractionally quantized Hall plateau and a strongly anisotropic longitudinal resistance resembling that of the stripe phases., Comment: Nature Physics, (2011)

Even though composite fermions in the fractional quantum Hall liquid are well established, it is not yet known up to what energies they remain intact. We probe the high-energy spectrum of the 1/3 liquid directly by resonant inelastic light scattering, and report the observation of a large number of new collective modes. Supported by our theoretical calculations, we associate these with transitions across two or more composite fermions levels. It has been puzzling that the resistivity of high mobility two-dimensional(2D) carrier systems in semiconductors with low carrier density often exhibits a large increase followed by a decrease when the temperature ($T$) is raised above a characteristic temperature comparable with the Fermi temperature ($T_F$). We find that the metallic 2D hole system (2DHS) in GaAs quantum well (QW) has a linear density ($p$) dependent conductivity, $\sigma\approx e\mu^*(p-p_0)$, in both the degenerate (T<T_F$) is originated from the reduced $p_0$, the density of immobile carriers in a two-phase picture., Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. We study the effects of a perpendicular magnetic field on the spin and charge distribution across a quantum wire. Using momentum resolved tunneling between two parallel wires we measure the dispersion relation for different perpendicular magnetic fields. We find that as the magnetic field increases, a strip of spin polarized electrons separates in the cross section of the wire. We provide a quantitative description of the emerging structure within a Hartree-Fock approximation, showing that it results from exchange interaction between electrons in the wire. We discuss the relation of these results to the structure of Quantum Hall edge states.

The spin degree of freedom in quantum phases of the second Landau level is probed by resonant light scattering. The long wavelength spin wave, which monitors the degree of spin polarization, is at the Zeeman energy in the fully spin-polarized state at $\nu$=3. At lower filling factors the intensity of the Zeeman mode collapses indicating loss of polarization. A novel continuum of low-lying excitations emerges that dominates near $\nu$=8/3 and $\nu$=5/2. Resonant Rayleigh scattering reveals that quantum fluids for $\nu<3$ break up into robust domain structures. While the state at $\nu$=5/2 is considered to be fully polarized, these results reveal unprecedented roles for spin degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures
