Recently, competing electronic instabilities, including superconductivity and density-wave-like order, have been discovered in vanadium-based kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) with a nontrivial band topology. This finding stimulates wide interests to study the interplay of these competing electronic orders and possible exotic excitations in the superconducting state. Here, in order to further clarify the nature of density-wave-like transition in these kagome superconductors, we performed 51V and 133Cs nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the CsV3Sb5 single crystal. A first-order phase transition associated with orbital ordering is revealed by observing a sudden splitting of orbital shift in 51V NMR spectrum at the structural transition temperature Ts ~ 94 K. In contrast, the quadrupole splitting from a charge-density-wave (CDW) order on 51V NMR spectrum only appears gradually below Ts with a typical second-order transition behavior, suggesting that the CDW order is a secondary electronic order. Moreover, combined with 133Cs NMR spectrum, the present result also confirms a three-dimensional structural modulation with a 2ax2ax2c period. Above Ts, the temperature-dependent Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) further indicate the existence of remarkable magnetic fluctuations from vanadium 3d orbitals, which are suppressed due to orbital ordering below Ts. The present results strongly support that, besides CDW order, the previously claimed density-wave-like transition also involves a dominant orbital order, suggesting a rich orbital physics in these kagome superconductors., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information available upon request

Van der Waals heterostructures (VDWHs) exhibit rich properties and thus has potential for applications, and charge transfer between different layers in a heterostructure often dominates its properties and device performance. It is thus critical to reveal and understand the charge transfer effects in VDWHs, for which electronic structure measurements have proven to be effective. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the electronic structures of (PbSe)1.16(TiSe2)m(m=1, 2), which are naturally occurring VDWHs, and discovered several striking charge transfer effects. When the thickness of the TiSe2 layers is halved from m=2 to m=1, the amount of charge transferred increases unexpectedly by more than 250%. This is accompanied by a dramatic drop in the electron-phonon interaction strength far beyond the prediction by first-principles calculations and, consequently, superconductivity only exists in the m=2 compound with strong electron-phonon interaction, albeit with lower carrier density. Furthermore, we found that the amount of charge transferred in both compounds is nearly halved when warmed from below 10 K to room temperature, due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of the constituent layers of these misfit compounds. These unprecedentedly large charge transfer effects might widely exist in VDWHs composed of metal-semiconductor contacts; thus, our results provide important insights for further understanding and applications of VDWHs., Comment: 6 Pages, 4 figures

With unique distorted 1T structure and the associated in-plane anisotropic properties, mono- and few-layer ReX2 (X=S, Se) have recently attracted particular interest. Based on experiment and first-principles calculations, we investigate the fracture behavior of ReX2. We find that the cleaved edges of ReX2 flakes usually form an angle of ~120{\deg} or ~60{\deg}. In order to understand such phenomenon, we perform comprehensive investigations on the uniaxial tensile stress-strain relation of monolayer and multi-layer ReX2 sheets. Our numerical calculation shows that the particular cleaved edges of ReX2 flakes are caused by unique anisotropic ultimate tensile strengths and critical strains. We also calculate the stress-strain relation of WTe2, which explains why their cleaved edges are not corresponding to the principle axes. Our proposed mechanism about the fracture angle has also been supported by the calculated cleavage energies and surface energies for different edge surfaces.

We report the experimental realization of Dirac semimetal state in NdSb, a material with antiferromagnetic ground state. The occurrence of topological semimetal state has been well supported by our band structure calculations and the experimental observation of chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance. A field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed, in response to the change of spin polarization. The observation of topological semimetal state in a magnetic material provides an opportunity to investigate the magneto-topological phenomena.

PtBi2 with a layered trigonal crystal structure was recently reported to exhibit an unconventional large linear magnetoresistance, while the mechanism involved is still elusive. Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we present a systematic study on its bulk and surface electronic structure. Through careful comparison with first-principle calculations, our experiment distinguishes the low-lying bulk bands from entangled surface states, allowing the estimation of the real stoichiometry of samples. We find significant electron doping in PtBi2, implying a substantial Bi deficiency induced disorder therein. We discover a Dirac-cone-like surface state on the boundary of the Brillouin zone, which is identified as an accidental Dirac band without topological protection. Our findings exclude quantum-limit-induced linear band dispersion as the cause of the unconventional large linear magnetoresistance., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3 is a semimetal, an intriguing exception in iridates where the strong spin-orbit interaction coupled with electron correlations tends to impose a novel insulating state. We report results of our investigation of bulk single-crystal Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 or Ir-deficient, orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3. It retains the same crystal structure as stoichiometric SrIrO3 but exhibits a sharp, simultaneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) and metal-insulator (MI) transition at 185 K. Above it, the basal-plane resistivity features an extended regime of almost linear-temperature dependence up to 800 K but the strong electronic anisotropy renders an insulating behavior in the out-of-plane resistivity. The Hall resistivity undergoes an abrupt sign change and grows below 40 K, which along with the Sommerfeld constant of 20 mJ/mole K2 suggests a multiband effect. All results including our first-principles calculations underscore a delicacy of the metallic state in SrIrO3 that is in close proximity to an AFM insulating state. The contrasting ground states in isostructural Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 and SrIrO3 illustrate a critical role of even slight lattice distortions in rebalancing the ground state in the iridates. Finally, the observed simultaneous AFM and MI transitions reveal a direct correlation between the magnetic transition and formation of a charge gap in the iridate, which is conspicuously absent in Sr2IrO4., Comment: 5 figures

Very recently, two-dimensional(2D) boron sheets (borophene) with rectangular structure has been grown successfully on single crystal Ag(111) substrates.The fabricated boroprene is predicted to have unusual mechanical properties. We performed first-principle calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of the monolayer borophene, including ideal tensile strength and critical strain. It was found that monolayer borophene can withstand stress up to 20.26 N/m and 12.98 N/m in a and b directions, respectively.However, its critical strain was found to be small. In a direction, the critical value is only 8%, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the lowest among all studied 2D materials.Our numerical results show that the tensile strain applied in b direction enhances the bucking height of borophene resulting in an out-of-plane negative Poisson's ratio, which makes the boron sheet show superior mechanical flexibility along b direction.The failure mechanism and phonon instability of monolayer borophene were also explored.

We report the surface electronic structure of niobium phosphide NbP single crystal on (001) surface by vacuum ultraviolet angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Combining with our first principle calculations, we identify the existence of the Fermi arcs originated from topological surface states. Furthermore, the surface states exhibit circular dichroism pattern, which may correlate with its non-trivial spin texture. Our results provide critical evidence for the existence of the Weyl Fermions in NbP, which lays the foundation for further investigations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The structural and thermal properties of bulk Td-WTe2 have been studied by using first-principles calculations. We find that the lattice thermal conductivity of WTe2 is anisotropic, with the highest value along a-axis and lowest one along the c-axis at 300 K. Our calculated size dependent thermal conductivity shows that nanostructuring of WTe2 can possibly further decrease the lattice thermal conductivity. Such extremely low thermal conductivity, even much lower than WSe2, makes WTe2 attractive for use as thermal-insulation material for thermoelectric devices.

We report the detailed electronic structure of WTe$_2$ by high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Unlike the simple one electron plus one hole pocket type of Fermi surface topology reported before, we resolved a rather complicated Fermi surface of WTe$_2$. Specifically, there are totally nine Fermi pockets, including one hole pocket at the Brillouin zone center $\Gamma$, and two hole pockets and two electron pockets on each side of $\Gamma$ along the $\Gamma$-$X$ direction. Remarkably, we have observed circular dichroism in our photoemission spectra, which suggests that the orbital angular momentum exhibits a rich texture at various sections of the Fermi surface. As reported previously for topological insulators and Rashiba systems, such a circular dichroism is a signature for spin-orbital coupling (SOC). This is further confirmed by our density functional theory calculations, where the spin texture is qualitatively reproduced as the conjugate consequence of SOC. Since the backscattering processes are directly involved with the resistivity, our data suggest that the SOC and the related spin and orbital angular momentum textures may be considered in the understanding of the anomalous magnetoresistance of WTe$_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Perovskite SrIrO3 has long been proposed as an exotic semimetal induced by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. However, its low-lying electronic structure is still lacking. We synthesize high-quality perovskite SrIrO3 (100) films by means of oxide molecular beam epitaxy, and then systemically investigate their low energy electronic structure using in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the hole-like bands around R and the electron-like bands around U(T) intersect the Fermi level simultaneously, providing the direct evidence of the semimetallic ground state in this compound. Comparing with the density functional theory, we discover that the bandwidth of states near Fermi level is extremely small, and there exists a pronounced mixing between the Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 states. Moreover, our data reveal that the predicted Dirac degeneracy protected by the mirror-symmetry, which was theoretically suggested to be the key to realize the non-trivial topological properties, is actually lifted in perovskite SrIrO3 thin films. NdO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ is a new layered superconductor. We have studied the low-lying electronic structure of a single crystalline NdO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ superconductor, whose superconducting transition temperature is 4.87K, with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi surface consists of two small electron pockets around the X point and shows little warping along the $k_z$ direction. Our results demonstrate the multi-band and two-dimensional nature of the electronic structure. The good agreement between the photoemission data and the band calculations gives the renormalization factor of 1, indicating the rather weak electron correlations in this material. Moreover, we found that the actual electron doping level and Fermi surface size are much smaller than what are expected from the nominal composition, which could be largely explained by the bismuth dificiency. The small Fermi pocket size and the weak electron correlations found here put strong constraints on theory, and suggest that the BiS$_2$-based superconductors could be conventional BCS superconductors mediated by the electron-phonon coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been performed on Bi2Ir2O7 single crystals, a prototypical example of the pyrochlore iridates. The density of states, the Fermi surface, and the near Fermi level band dispersion in the plane perpendicular to the (111) direction were all measured and found to be in overall agreement with our LDA + SOC density functional calculations. Our observations indicate the general validity of the LDA + SOC-based approach for the electronic structure of pyrochlore iridates, raising the possibility that some of the novel predicted phases such as quantum spin ice or Weyl Fermion states may exist in this family of compounds., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

The decays $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \pi^0\pi^0\pi^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $\eta(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)\pi^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decays of $\chi_{c1}$ to vector meson pairs $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$ and $\omega\phi$ are observed for the first time using $(106\pm4)\times 10^6$ $\psip$ events accumulated at the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are measured to be $(4.4\pm 0.3\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-4}$, $(6.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}$, and $(2.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-5}$, for $\chi_{c1}\to \phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$, and $\omega\phi$, respectively. The observation of $\chi_{c1}$ decays into a pair of vector mesons $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$ and $\omega\phi$ indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in $\chi_{cJ}$ decays. In addition, the measurement of $\chi_{cJ}\to \omega\phi$ gives the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed decay. Branching fractions for $\chi_{c0}$ and $\chi_{c2}$ decays into other vector meson pairs are also measured with improved precision., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

To clarify the role of the Kondo effect in screening local magnetic moments of Plutonium 5f--electrons as well as its competition to the RKKY interactions we use a combination of density functional theory with static Hartree Fock and dynamic Hubbard 1 approximations to calculate the strength of both the Kondo exchange, J_K, and of the RKKY exchange, J_RKKY, couplings for Pu{1-x}Am{x} system as a function of x. We find that J_K increases despite the atomic volume gets larger with the Am doping due to unexpected enhancement of hybridization between f and conduction electrons in the vicinity of the Fermi level. At the same time, the RKKY exchange is shown to reduce smoothly with increasing x. Our results imply that the Kondo effect should be robust against the increase in interatomic spacing of this alloy., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Recent high transverse field muon spin relaxation (TF-uSR) experiments performed on Bi2212 single crystals show that the phase parameter extracted from individual histogram, an indication of the angle between the muon's initial polarization direction and the detector direction, is temperature dependent. This phase shift effect, probably due to the electronic or initial polarization instability at a time interval comparable with the muon spin precession period, will affect the second moment and skewness of the field profiles. The proper data analysis procedure is discussed to correct this phase shift effect, which is important on the quantitative interpretation of the first order transition or melting transition in the Bi2212 mixed state., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

Zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$\mu $SR) data for dilute spin magnetic systems have been widely interpreted with what is called a Kubo-Toyabe form based on a Lorentzian distribution of local field components. We derive here the proper magnetic field \textit{magnitude} distribution using independent and uncorrelated \textit{component} distributions. Our result is then compared to the previously accepted formula for ZF-$\mu $SR. We discuss the origins of the magnetic field component and magnitude distributions. Further we found that after rescaling the magnetic field, the differences that are amenable to experimental examination are quite small, although the interpretations behind them are quite different., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure
